BIO American rock band Blackberry Smoke - Made up of Charlie Starr (vocals, guitar), Paul Jackson (guitar, vocals), Richard Turner (bass, vocals), Brit Turner (drums) and Brandon Still (keyboards) - has become known for a singular sound indebted to classic rock, blues, country and folk. Since their debut in 2004, the Atlanta-based band has independently released six full-length albums and toured relentlessly, building a strong and loyal community of fans. The band has also had unparalleled success with sales of each of their last albums. In 2015 they released Holding All the Roses, which was the first independently-released record to hit #1 on the Billboard Country album charts in modern history. Like An Arrow followed in 2016, again putting them at #1. 2018 saw the band outsell all other releases with their self-produced Find A Light plus the acoustic accompaniment, The Southern Ground Sessions. "That is one of our songs that harkens back to the wilder days when we were younger," he told us. "There was lots of temptation around, of the female persuasion and the narcotic persuasion. Charlie Starr grew up in eastern Alabama, in a small town bordered by the Chattahoochee River and dotted with textile factories. Like most American mill towns, it took a hit during the dawn of the 21st century, when companies began shipping most of their work overseas. Some residents bounced back by landing new jobs. Others turned to their vices instead, looking for a more temporary fix. “The song has to do with whatever plague is sucking a little town dry,” he says, “whether it’s the meth epidemic or oxy. That kind of thing happens all over America, but it just seems to impact the small towns more. This bittersweet breakup song features backup harmony vocals by Jason Isbell's wife Amanda Shires. The singer-songwriter and violin player has performed as a member of the Texas Playboys, Thrift Store Cowboys and Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, as well as recording solo material. Blackberry Smoke's Charlie Starr explained the choice to add Shires onto the track: "I wrote 'Let Me Down Easy' with my old buddy, Keith Nelson," he shared. "We really wanted a cool female voice on it. I thought it would be really cool to have a female harmony on this song, sort of a Gram Parsons-Emmylou Harris kind of thing, and Amanda came to mind. Amanda Shires most definitely has a cool voice. She sings beautifully on it."
