Feb. 26 marked 30 years since Bill Hicks passed away. Bill was a friend of mine back in the 80s/90s, and I hosted a live X Space Monday night in his honor. Thought it might be fun to sit around the virtual campfire, tell some jokes, share some memories, and celebrate Bill’s life. We played some clips of his best comedy bits, talked about all the amazing things Hicks accomplished in his short 32 years, and wonder what else he might have created had he lived 30 more. Of course we couldn't refrain from some speculation about what Bill Hicks would think of our world today. His observations three decades ago are still remarkably relevant, and nearly all of the problems our country faced then still haven't been solved. (In fact, they've gotten worse!) In Part 1, we hear Bill talk about the War on Drugs, alcoholism, smoking, wars for oil abroad, censorship, the Waco siege of 1993, the hassles of flying, the high cost of living, and the dumbing down of our society. The anti-intellectualism Bill talked about in 1989’s “Sane Man” comedy special was just a joke then….or was it? 35 years later, we aren’t laughing anymore. Did Bill have a crystal ball or what? Did he have a time machine; or was he an alien who was visiting our planet only for 32 years, before the spaceship picked him up and took him home? We talked about all that and more. In this excerpt from Episode 17 of the "Kennedy Americans" podcast I gave a brief summary of #RFKJr's policy on the #Israel-#Hamas war, and #Palestine. Two weeks after a #Republican revolt ousted House Speaker McCarthy over #Ukraine war spending, the United States of America is still without a Speaker of the House. This is truly an unprecedented moment in our history. The lack of progress by Ukraine to push Russian forces back has created an opening for some members in Congress to question why the U.S. should keep sending money. A flank of Republicans, led by former President Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner in the 2024 race for the White House, is increasingly opposed to sending more money overseas. That faction was pivotal in getting $6 billion in Ukraine funding stripped from the last-minute 45-day funding bill that prevented a government shutdown in early October. Likewise, some European allies, including #Poland, have begun to pull back on their support for the war, citing the need to prioritize their own defenses. On Sunday after the temporary spending bill was passed, President Joe Biden warned that the cuts could hit Ukraine at a critical time. “We cannot under any circumstances allow America’s support for Ukraine to be interrupted,” Biden said, urging Congress to negotiate an aid package as soon as possible. The tide of American public opinion is turning against the war in Ukraine, and the never-ending flow of money and weapons to fund a losing war at a time when Americans are struggling to keep up with inflation and a cost of living crisis at home. Recent polls show that President #Biden is in trouble, swiftly losing support among #Democrats while #Trump edges a lead of 3-5%. Then there's the wild card -- #Kennedy, an independent antiwar candidate who has pledged to negotiate #peace between Ukraine and #Russia as a top priority of his administration. #Trump has also promised to end the war "within 24 hours" if elected next year. Clearly, this is a message voters want to hear. In this election year, has the unpopular war in Ukraine become a metaphorical stone around Biden's neck, dragging him down to defeat? On September 22, as Ukrainian president #Zelensky was visiting #Canada, a special honor was given in Parliament to a man named Yaroslav Hunka. President #Zelensky -- and all 338 members of the Canadian Parliament -- rose to their feet and honored this 98 year-old Ukrainian with not one, but two standing ovations. Little did they know he was a Nazi collaborator in #WWII (or so they said). As it turns out, Hunka served with pride in the dreaded #Waffen-SS, #Galicia division -- a unit known for its especially savage brutality in war crimes of the #Holocaust. Yaroslav Hunka, the 98 year-old Ukrainian Nazi who was honored by the Canadian Parliament and Ukrainian President #Zelensky with not one, but two standing ovations last week, published his manifesto online back in 2011. This is Hunka's Mein Kampf -- the story of his struggle against the #communists; the evil Red Russians; the detested Poles, and his Jewish neighbors in #Ukraine. I discovered Hunka's memoir of his youthful years learning how to kill from his heroes in the notorious UPA, Stepan #Bandera's OUN-B, welcoming the German #Nazis "with joy" when they occupied his village in 1941, and his pride in joining the #Waffen-SS, #Galicia Division.
