Science, Myth, and Madness: The 241st Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 241st in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss food, science, and myth. Research out of Tufts University three years ago created the Food Compass—a new guide to what is healthy that rivals the Food Pyramid for sheer lunacy. Advising us that Froot Loops and Pringles are healthier choices than meat and eggs, the authors of that research are now promoting ESG + Nutrition, in which their Food Compass informs governments and private enterprise on how to get the population of the world to follow along. Then: What is history, what is myth, and when is it appropriate to stop talking and be quiet already? Real figures from history—Jesus, King David, Churchill—are also mythic; to what degree do the myths verge from the reality, and what are the conditions under which we are obliged to care? Also mentioned: the Censorship Industrial Complex, Pathological Noble Liars, and Dumbledore’s Army. Finally: a few words on the death of Paul Harrell, who advocated for the responsible use of firearms.

Widespread Problems in Biology: Dr. Joomi Kim on DarkHorse
Bret speaks with Dr. Joomi Kim on the discovery that some of the processes biologists use are not what they believe they are and the implications this could potentially have on science. Dr. Joomi Kim is a molecular biologist and author of the Substack, Let’s Be Clear where she challenges the mainstream narratives about COVID-19.
Please note, Dr. Kim offers the following correction (at 23:41): “While describing the steps of western blots it may have sounded like antibodies get added before the blotting step (when proteins are transferred from gel to membrane). Antibodies are added after the blotting step."

Is AI Conscious? The 239th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 239th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss AI, specifically how Grok responded to the prompt “image of Cartesian crisis,” whether AI is conscious, and whether it makes art. What is art, and are humans required to make it, or do search and memory suffice? Not art: the rendering of the national anthem at the Democratic National Convention. Speaking of which: what demographic is most strongly democratic? Answer: Childless, never married women ages 20 – 45. We discuss how this affects policy and society. And: the quasi-announcement that Kennedy may leave the presidential race. Finally—Zack is going off on new adventures.

Can the West Be Saved? The 238th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 238th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss why there is a regressive backlash against women, and how to Rescue the Republic, and Join the Resistance. On the former topic, we talk about #MeToo, Olympic athletes that aren’t what they seem, and candidates for high office who are useful only for their immutable characteristics. On the latter, we discuss what the West is, why it needs to be saved, the hedonic treadmill, the Five Eyes Alliance, and whistle-blowers from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Also: the New York Times proves that, even when the stakes are low, it butchers and misunderstands science and logic.

One Bit Psy-Op: The 237th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 237th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the choice of Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota, as VP for the Democrats. Is he correct that Democrats are the party of freedom, respecting one’s neighbors, and minding your own business? (No.) Also: Covid at the Olympics—they’re not done with us yet! Consider how nuts it is that we are still being told to “vaccinate” ourselves using mRNA products against Covid. And: How activists speak of assigning sex at birth when it’s an answer they don’t like, but identifying sex at birth when they do like the answer. In fact—sex is observed at birth, and sometimes the observation is wrong. We discuss lineage selection and the common ground between Irish Catholics and Protestants. And finally: Bobby Kennedy’s story of staging a bear x bicycle accident in Central Park, and Bret’s tale of the bear (seal) skeleton in his closet.

A Coup Against Merit: The 236th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 236th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the attack on merit that is revealed in the Olympics Opening Ceremony. We discuss also attacks on Christianity, corporate ESG scores, the relationship of “queer culture” to gay culture, and the memory-holing of what democrats used to think about both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Also: what does it mean to be weird (or WEIRD)? Used to be that liberal cities like Portland and Austin were proud to be weird, but now true-blue democrats are being told that being different is unacceptable. This from the same people who are removing the word “mother” from legal documents, and holding segregated meetings for “white dudes” in support of their chosen candidate. Finally, Seymour Hersh reports that the 25th Amendment was invoked to get Biden to step down as nominee.

Pride and Shamelessness: The 235th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 235th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the lack of transparency from the Secret Service about the assassination attempt on Trump, as revealed in part during this week’s Congressional hearing. Using Colin Ray’s “That’s my story and I’m sticking to it,” we analyze why information is being withheld from the public. Then: Portland Pride—the annual (now in July!) Parade reveals generic aesthetics, soulless corporate sponsorship, the public display of kink, and children taking it all in.

Cave of Mirrors: The 234th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 234th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the assassination attempt on Trump’s life, and the security and media landscape in which this happened. Are we all in a modern Plato’s Cave that has become a hall of mirrors, such that we can be sitting right next to someone, seeing a totally different reality? How can we evaluate different interpretations—is “lone gun nut” an inherently better or less biased hypothesis than conspiracy? Or are our use of aphorisms—like Hanlon’s Razor, “First, do no harm,” and “correlation doesn’t imply causation”—overused, and applied in places where they should not be? Finally: a poem.

Exquisite Failures: The 233rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 233rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss The Hope Accord, which calls for the “immediate suspension of Covid-19 mRNA vaccine products.” We encourage you to sign it. Then: wisdom from Charlie Munger on why we should prefer a world in which some people are not compensated for their losses (even if they didn’t deserve to lose), over having gameable systems in which cheaters flourish. Then: how the NYT stacks the deck in favor of sunscreen, by asking oncologists and dermatologists. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Finally, how chytrid fungus has wiped out frog populations and species across the world; how fever is used by endotherms like us to clear infections; and new research that finds that frogs like frog saunas, which not only feels great, but helps them clear fungal infections. The through-line: human hubris intervening in complex systems often ends badly.

Common Sense, Inverted: The 232nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 232nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the 248th anniversary of the founding of the United States, with readings from Common Sense and the Declaration of Independence. Then: deep state vs. shallow state, and how it came to be that news = New York Times ^-1, and health = CDC^-1. Discussing the biggest story of 2020—the corruption and affiliations of what would become the first family of the U.S.—was considered a moral failure at the time. Finally: feminism fails in a spectacular show of rugby and lingerie (as Meghan Murphy said: “Modern feminism wants women either in burkas or p*rn gear”), and we discuss why WNBA star Caitlyn Clark is being competed with in the way that she is.

Lie to a Tyrant: The 231st Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 231st in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the Supreme Court’s decision in Biden v Missouri, and its implications for free speech and censorship; the presidential debate that will exclude Kennedy; and the release of Julian Assange—all possible tactics to control public conversation. Also: what does an AI deep fake of Dave Chappelle suggest about the future of comedy, and the role of humor in human interactions? Finally: a meandering tale of cars, border guards, and leaping water vipers, culminating in discussion of new research out of Madagascar on jumping leeches.

It’s not Complicated: The 230th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 230th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss air quality in Los Angeles, and how California led the way in making catalytic converters standard in cars across the United States. Now, that regulatory apparatus is being used for less honorable ends, as legislators consider mandating the inclusion of folic acid in all tortilla products. We discuss pre- vs post-industrial diet, what mother’s milk is for, whether adult Americans are sleeping well, and how reductionism helped get us into this mess. Collectively, we have a complicated mindset, mapped on to a complex system. Then: the Pentagon funded an anti-vax campaign in the Philippines during Covid. At the same time that Americans who were hesitant about the Covid vax were demonized and targeted, the government was creating vaccine hesitancy in other parts of the world. The Cartesian crisis continues.

Monsters, Spotted: The 229th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 229th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss empathy, sympathy, and theory of mind; corporate personhood, psychopathic behavior, and the limitations of humans; kin selection, and reciprocity, both direct and indirect. Then: utopias, and why they fail, from the hero of Er in Plato’s Republic to the Singularity. And we discuss the human need for story, which exists next to, and perhaps deeper than, our need for analysis and logic.

Who Wins & WHO Loses? The 227th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 227th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this episode, we discuss the failure of the WHOs Pandemic Preparedness Treaty—what it means, what the world did right, and what Goliath may have learned from the experience against a scrappy band of emergent Davids. Also: who cheats in high school sports, who does not, and what the Washington State Track and Field meet in Yakima demonstrated about athleticism, sportsmanship, and honor, with special mention of Braelyn Baker. Finally: thoughts about dreams.

Science Friction: The 226th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 226th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this episode, we discuss a new breakthrough in plant genetics: polyploid potatoes and corn from Ohalo Genetics, which are claimed to double the harvest from individual plants. Beginning with a discussion of naturally occurring polyploidy in other species, including frogs, we analyze the discussion of Ohalo’s new products with an evolutionary lens. Is it possible that biotechnology can evade trade-offs, or is this utopian thinking in the corporate world? Why do so many mistakes of modernity come in the form of people accustomed to complicated systems, applying their knowledge to complex systems? Finally: does Terrence Howard (recently on Joe Rogan) have a predictive model, or is he just blowing smoke?

Everything Under the Sun: The 225th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying
In this 225th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this episode, we discuss assassination attempts, the sun, pharmaceuticals, and the American presidency. Assassination: Robert Fico, the president of Slovakia, was shot several days after announcing that his country would reject the WHO Pandemic Treaty. The sun: last weekend’s dramatic aurora were the visible manifestation of the strongest solar storm in 19 years; how should we be thinking about mitigating the risks to our electrical grid, and to our society, from future storms that will surely come? Also: how do risks from biotic vs abiotic forces differ? Pharma: Semaglutide (aka Ozempic) helps protects against heart disease! Or…not. We dive into the research that supposedly produced this result, complete with conflicts of interest between Novo Nordisk and the conference in Italy where the work was presented. Biden: invites Trump to debate, with conditions.
