Mom's HP Pavilion 7125 - Games mom didn't approve of - Part 2
We return to what is a recreation of my mom's old HP Pavilion 7125. A Pentium 1 based PC from the mid to late 90s. I repaired and restored it in a previous video and how I'll show you how I used to use it. My capture device was being fussy about resolutions below 720p but ultimately cooperated after a second or so. Here I'm showing off the games I tried to fly under the radar as their content was a bit questionable for a 13 year old in the late 90s.
Here I will show the following games:
Doom (With Chex Quest "camouflage")
Duke Nukem 3D (with Parental Lock)
MechWarrior 2 Mercenaries
Diablo
Specifications:
- HP Pavilion 7125
* Intel Pentium 133MHz CPU
* 80MB EDO RAM
* Windows 95 OSR2
* CF-to-IDE Adapter
- 4GB CompactFlash Card
- 1.5GB Quantum Fireball IDE (Installed but not connected)
- 4GB HP Branded IDE (Also installed but not connected)
* 6x CD-ROM (without CD scratching issue, yay)
* 3COM Etherlink III ISA 10BASET Ethernet Card
* Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16C ViBRA ISA
- Replaces Crystal C4232 Integrated Sound Card
* 28.8 ISA Modem (idk what brand, doesn't matter)

Upgrading In-Law's PC - Video Card and Windows 11 Install - Part 2 #ryzen #asrock #computerbuild
My father-in-law was finally ready for an upgrade. For some reason, he really likes this Emachines case and it's been a mainstay of his computing setup for the last 15 years. This is also going to be a quantum leap as it will have Windows 11 Professional as well as a much newer copy of Microsoft Office. In this video, I'll be taking the old machine apart and installing a new motherboard from ASRock, a Ryzen 3 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 250GB SSD.
Of course, he does not need much power as he is not a gamer. Just boring office-type work with occasional web browsing. As far as why a B450, Ryzen 3 and DDR4 memory? I had a $400 budget to work with.
I wish I read the box and listing more carefully. Otherwise, I would have realized that this Ryzen 3 4100 does not have a built-in graphics. Had to quickly find a decent and inexpensive graphics card. Also, the Windows 11 Media is the same one made with Rufus for the AMD Ryzen 7 Framework laptop from a previous video. It already had been setup to bypass the checks for 4GB of RAM, a TPM and Secure Boot. This way it could be used on machines that don't meet those arbitrary requirements.

RedStar OS 3.0 - Installing the Beast - Part 1
Today we're going to ruin this old PC by installing an infamous Linux distribution: RedStar OS 3.0!
Why you ask? Curiosity mainly.
Since none of us can read Korean, we used the Google Translate App and it's live translate feature. Aside from a few changes here and there, the installation greatly resembles installing macOS.
We are not connecting it to any network for security as we don't know what nasty surprises lurk in this machine now. We don't recommend you do try on your own either, especially if you care about your data. You have been warned.
We're also not providing any links to find the ISO image. Exercise your Google-Fu young grasshopper.
We borrowed RichardG's guide for installation and configuration.

1966 Plymouth Fury II Project - A833 Transmission - Update 6/12/2022
A quick update to this week's progress.
Painted the 318 Polysphere small block and prepped it for storage
Tore apart the A833 Overdrive 4-Speed after finding a critical flaw with my reassembly which resulted in a ruined 3-4 synchro drum.
Another is on its way, and I still have plenty I can do in the meantime.
One such task was getting the firewall patched for the replacement steering column. The metal was harvested from an old Cisco ASA which no one should miss.

Testing Rust Remover Gel on 318 Polysphere Valve Covers
My dad usually is there to help me make progress on the project Fury. Since he's going to be out of town, I though I might clean up some of the parts of the original engine. It originally had a Polysphere 318, aka Wide Block or misidentified as a big block (it isn't). My dad still wants to build up this engine some day so I need to restore the components sooner or later.
I ran a wire brush and wheel on the first one and it yielded ok results.
Lets see how this stuff does by comparison.

1966 Plymouth Fury II Project - Gauges & Electrical - Update 4/25/2023 #plymouth #mopar #fury
I promise I'm not dead!
Far from it, and here's my progress since then.
For now, I'm going to concentrate on electrical work while I heal.
I had already done some wiring under the hood and now need to concentrate on the interior like gauges.
The original gauges were damaged while this thing was in outdoor storage.
For now, I plan to use these cheap iEquus gauges mounted on scrap metal I had been saving from previous IT projects.
I have rigged them up to test on my workbench and now I'm ready to install them in the car and begin testing the electrical systems.

1966 Plymouth Fury II Project Car "Painless" Bulkhead Electrical Shenanigans Part 1 #plymouth #mopar
Another project update. I'm getting some electrical done this time and need to start at the fuse panel. I'm also patching the firewall and introducing a combination bracket and firewall patch made from the case of a Cisco ASA. I'm using a Painless Performance bulkhead connector and so far it has worked out well. I'm *not* sponsored by them and so far I like this product. I paid my own hard-earned money for it.
I'll have more to do and it's what I can get done while I continue to recover from my extended hospital stay. As soon as I feel able, I'll circle back to the transmission.

[Classic] Firing up the Compaq Prolinea 4100 486 Desktop Retro PC
I shot this footage about 8 years ago but somehow never finished it.
Here's a look at one of my favorite old desktops, the Compaq Prolinea 4100 Desktop. Enjoy the custom paint scheme that has been damaged by being in storage (and hasn't gotten better over the years since). It has the following:
AMD 486 DX 100MHz CPU
64MB of EDO RAM
ESS AudioDrive ES1868F Sound Card
3COM EtherLink III 10BASET Ethernet Adapter
HP Branded Maxtor 1GB IDE Hard Drive
8x IDE CD-ROM Drive
1.44MB 3.5 Floppy
Built-in Cirrus Logic VGA
It's used for the only reason to get into retro computing... DOS games!

Mother's Day Project HP Pavilion 7125 Retro PC Resurrection Part 1
I've been wanting to do this retro pc project for awhile. This is another HP Pavilion 7125 that I rescued from the e-waste pile at a former job several years ago.
It's nearly identical to the one my mom owned back in late 1996.
Specifications:
- HP Pavilion 7125
* Intel Pentium 133MHz CPU
* 80MB EDO RAM
* Windows 95 OSR2
* CF-to-IDE Adapter
- 4GB CompactFlash Card
- 1.5GB Quantum Fireball IDE (Installed but not connected)
- 4GB HP Branded IDE (Also installed but not connected)
* 6x CD-ROM (without CD scratching issue, yay)
* 3COM Etherlink III ISA 10BASET Ethernet Card
* Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16C ViBRA ISA
- Replaces Crystal C4232 Integrated Sound Card
* 28.8 ISA Modem (idk what brand, doesn't matter)
In this video I'll show you the insides and a few of the games I enjoyed with this PC as well as some of the surviving programs salvaged from the old hard disks.
Microsoft Works 4.0
HP Financial Calculator
SimCity 2000
SimCity Classic
SimTower
Sonic CD
Hover
Chips Challenge
Jezz Ball
If you're interested in HP Personal Page, take a look at the intro video

[Classic] Exploring the HP Vectra 5/100 Pentium Desktop Retro PC
I also shot this footage about 8 years ago as well and sat on it til now.
In the previous video I explored a Compaq Prolinea 4100. Now meet it's companion, the HP Vectra 5/100. It's essentially a slightly better 486. It has the following:
Intel Pentium 100MHz CPU (Yet to be tested with the division bug)
64MB of EDO RAM
Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 Vibra Sound Card
Linksys LNE100TX Ethernet Adapter
Maxtor 1GB IDE Hard Drive
16x IDE CD-ROM Drive
1.44MB 3.5 Floppy
*Dead* Built-in Cirrus Logic VGA
*Working* S3 Trio64 SVGA Video
Now why would I want this when I already have the Compaq with similar specs? Well someday I'd like to have a retro lan party with similar spec'd machines. This won't be the last Hewlett Packard featured on the channel.

AT-Style Classic Pentium 2 PC Build - Part 1
I started this classic PC build in the late spring of 2022, just before my long-term hospital stay. Today I finally finished it off and confirmed it will boot.
Watch as I modify the standoffs on the chassis as this is from an earlier era where things were not so flexible.
Specs as of this video
Intel Pentium 2 400MHz CPU (underclocked to 266, will fix later)
128MB of SD-RAM
No Sound Card
No Ethernet Adapter
No Hard Drive
No CD-ROM Drive
1.44MB 3.5 Floppy (disconnected)
ATI Radeon 9200* AGP (not sure about model, borrowed from dead 2004 HP Pavilion)
AT Techmedia Case
This build when completed will more or less match Pyros, my other Pentium 2 machine. This is intentional. I plan to have several similar builds for a future retro LAN party. Stay tuned for future progress.

Installing Xubuntu & Compiling RetroPie from source - Lenovo Thinkcentre M73 Tiny RetroPie - Part 2
Following up on my first video with the Lenovo Thinkcentre M73 Tiny Desktop. Today I will be installing the OS which is Xubuntu 20.04 LTS.
I chose this release as I am growing fond of the XFCE Desktop and want to avoid GNOME 3 like the plague. The directions should work on most distributions however I would like to point out that I tried on Ubuntu-MATE to no success. I am not quite sure what happened or what is different aside from choice in user interface.
I was following the directions outlined in the RetroPie Documentation found here:
https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Debian/
The usb controller I am using is an older version of the following:
https://www.8bitdo.com/sn30-wireless-for-original-snes-sfc/
Note I am not getting paid anything
After installation, I will test emulation of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) for Sega Genesis/MegaDrive then Super Mario Bros.(1985) for Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). For now I want to compare how the emulation works vs it's Raspberri Pi Counterpart. Part 3 coming soon

Video Capture & Editing with Studio PCTV 3.0 from the Year 2000 - Retro PC Pyros - Part 04
From the Year 2000!!!!
Yes, Pyros is back with what made this PC special: Video Capture.
In the year 2000....it was very uncommon to have a capture device at all.
Usually you had to spend quite a lot on hardware & software or own a Power Macintosh with the right personality card... but I digress.
Pinnacle bundled their video editing software with RealProducer G2 (which resembles modern day OBS). Together, this was how I spend the early 2000s instead of doing homework. Let's take a look at a DTV box and some old VHS tapes. Keep in mind that the tapes were not stored in the best of conditions so the quality may have suffered.
Hardware in use includes the following:
ASUS P5B ATX Motherboard
Intel Pentium II @ 400 MHz
512 MB of SD-RAM, PC100
3DFX Voodoo 3 3000G AGP Graphics card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live!
Linksys LNE100TX 10/100 Ethernet Card
Studio PCTV PCI TV Tuner card
SD-IDE Adapter + 32GB SDHC SD Card
Apple 8x DVD-ROM
52x CDROM
DTV box: RCA ATSC Converter Box DAT800B1
VCR: Quasar Digitune
Software used:
Pinnacle Studio PCTV 3.0
RealProducer G2
Clips:
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (English Dub)
VH1 I Love the 80s
Married with Children Special/Promo

Demonstrating Lubuntu 18.04 LTS on my first full time Linux Box from 2003
It's Templar's turn to get some attention. I blew off the dust & decided to catch everyone up as to what happened since last it was featured.
Linux-Mandrake didn't boot after install because of the CF to IDE adapter.
Redhat installed ok but lack of known good RPMs is a major hinderance.
I really didn't think either of those 2 distro choices through.
Therefore, I installed Lubuntu 18.04 LTS to emulate the experience of my older Redhat based setup. Back then, I was trying to eschew using Windows on newer hardware and that phase didn't really last.
Here I'll demonstrate a few applications that I used while adjusting to using Linux as my then daily driver
XFE aka X File Explorer
QMMP (fork of XMMS which is like WinAMP)
Abiword (Word Processor)
Gnumeric (Spreadsheet)
Firefox trying in vain to cope with 2022 Youtube
The next part will feature some games including Unreal Tournament
Hardware in use includes the following:
Microstar MS-6714 Socket 478
Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.06 GHz
2GB of DDR PC400
Video Card nVidia Geforce 7600GS AGP (with busted fan)
SoundBlaster Live! 24-Bit
IDE DVD-ROM
