Lionsgate Names Adam Fogelson Motion Picture Group Chair
Lionsgate Names Adam Fogelson Motion Picture Group Chair
Lionsgate has named Adam Fogelson chair of the Motion Picture Group. Previous chair Joe Drake, who initiated the transition, will be working with Fogelson over the coming months to ensure a smooth succession.
Drake rejoined Lionsgate in 2017 after having success with Good Universe Pictures, the second company acquired by Lionsgate from Drake. During his current tenure, the Motion Picture Group has achieved growth, profitability and creative risk taking, according to a Lionsgate release. Highlights include the multiple award-winning Knives Out ($312 million global box office), the last two “John Wick” movies ($766 million-plus combined worldwide box office), relaunching the “Hunger Games” franchise with The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes ($340 million-plus worldwide box office), and the latest installment in the “Saw” franchise ($111 million global box office). In 2023, Lionsgate achieved its first billion-dollar-plus year at the global box office ($1.08 billion) since 2019.
In addition to the 2023 box office success, Drake and team have been responsible for expanding the Lionsgate Motion Picture business across multiple platforms, including tripling the size of its multiplatform business with movies such as Shotgun Wedding, Silent Night, Sisu and the upcoming Simple Favor 2, establishing itself as the leader in the theatrical faith space with hits such as Jesus Revolution, and growing its library through production and strategic acquisitions, according to Lionsgate.

“Joe has been a great partner and a respected team leader, a truly entrepreneurial executive with one of the best business minds in the industry,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said in a statement. “We are very fortunate to have Adam Fogelson, one of Hollywood’s most accomplished and innovative film executives, to succeed him. Adam has the leadership experience at both the major studio and independent level as well as the strategic vision to keep our Motion Picture Group strong and vibrant in a fast-changing environment.”
“Despite unprecedented disruption over the last few years, we built a team that thrived throughout and achieved everything I could have imagined at Lionsgate,” Drake said in a statement. “I am very proud we were able to reinvigorate our ‘Hunger Games’ and ‘Saw ‘franchises, grow the ‘John Wick Universe,’ and successfully expand every aspect of our motion picture business. When Jon and I engaged in succession planning, our goal was to build on the momentum and success we’d experienced over the last few years. Having worked side by side with Adam for the past 18 months, he is the perfect choice to lead the motion picture group forward to even greater heights.”
“I deeply appreciate the trust and confidence that Jon, Michael, Joe and the rest of the management team have placed in me and I look forward to embarking on this next chapter together,” Fogelson said in a statement. “Lionsgate unifies the two primary threads of my career: the scale and talent relationships of a major studio with the renegade, resourceful spirit of a start-up. I am dedicated to building and extending our extensive library of films and top-tier franchises which, as the last year has proved, still have lots of room to grow. I’m particularly grateful for the chance to continue working alongside this passionate and innovative team in a culture that is creatively audacious, entrepreneurial and supportive.”
Lionsgate is the third studio Fogelson will lead after serving as chairman of both Universal Pictures and the STX Motion Picture Group. At STX, he oversaw such hits as Hustlers, the “Bad Moms” franchise, The Upside, Greenland, The Gift, Molly’s Game and The Gentlemen, among others. Prior to leading the motion picture group at STX, Fogelson served as chairman of Universal Pictures for four years, leading that studio to its highest grossing performances at the worldwide box office at that time with hits including Despicable Me 1 and 2, Ted, Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect, Contraband, Safe House, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Snow White and the Huntsman, Identity Thief, Mama, The Purge and Les Misérables.

He was instrumental in the growth of the “Fast” franchise, overseeing the release of Fast and Furious 5 and 6, and he led the relaunch of the “Jurassic” universe with Jurassic World and greenlit other major hits including Lone Survivor, Ride Along, Non-Stop, Neighbors, The Purge 2, Fifty Shades of Grey and Lucy. He also managed the marketing campaign for Universal’s Tony Award-winning musical Wicked.

Disney’s ‘The Marvels’ Looks to Boost Superhero Brand, Weekend Box Office
Disney’s ‘The Marvels’ Looks to Boost Superhero Brand, Weekend Box Office
Disney’s The Marvels, expected to lead the box office take for the weekend through Nov. 12, is the latest Marvel Comics blockbuster in a franchise that is showing its age of late.
The first time Brie Larson donned superhero gear as Captain Marvel, the movie catapulted the 2016 Oscar winner (Room) to the box office A-list, generating a $153 million opening weekend en route to a $1.13 billion global theatrical run.
But times have changed since 2019, and box office superhero billionaires have become a scarce commodity due to market saturation and streaming video.
Larson is back as Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, with Disney’s The Marvels, Marvel Studios’ 33rd theatrical release following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. This time, Captain Marvel partners with two other heroines, Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), to take control of a destabilized universe.
While Larson has not been able to market the movie due to the just-ended actors’ strike, the actress is all over the television selling Nissan cars and headlining “Lessons in Chemistry” on Apple TV+.
The Marvels is projected to sell north of $42 million in tickets through Nov. 12, according to new data from Box Office Pro. The movie generated about $6 million in Thursday special screenings. That should be enough to easily win the weekend, holding off previous polesitters Universal Pictures’ Five Nights at Freddy’s (with a projected $7.6 million for the upcoming weekend) and Taylor Swift/The Eras Tour concert movie ($7 million).

Paramount Pictures/Apple Studios’ Killers of the Flower Moon is projected to sell another $5 million worth of tickets, just ahead of Sony Pictures’ new faith-based movie Journey to Bethlehem (a projected $4 million), and A24’s Pricilla Presley biopic Pricilla ($3.6 million).
Other releases include Focus Features’ The Holdovers (a projected $2.3 million), Paramount’s Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie ($1.6 million), Pantelion Films’ Radical ($1.4 million), and Universal/Blumhouse’s The Exorcist: Believer ($1.3 million).

PTSD Documentary ‘Here. Is. Better’ Due in Theaters June 23, on VOD June 27
Greenwich Entertainment has picked up North American theatrical and TVOD distribution rights to Here. Is. Better., a documentary film with unprecedented access inside therapy sessions of men and women veterans battling post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Greenwich will present film in a limited theatrical run starting June 23, followed by a VOD release on all major platforms in the United States and Canada June 27.
The feature-length documentary follows four veterans, each with diverse backgrounds and service experience, as they undergo the most clinically effective, evidence-based trauma psychotherapies for PTSD. Individuals featured in the film include former presidential hopeful Jason Kander, who shocked many when he left the Kansas City mayoral race in 2018 to seek treatment; a Vietnam War veteran still haunted by events that occurred over 50 years ago; and the voices of so often overlooked women veterans, all seeking the keys to unlock their places of hurt and pain. With unprecedented access to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the film interweaves these inspiring stories of men and women veterans overcoming the debilitating effects of PTSD.

The film’s release is timed to National PTSD Awareness Day (June 27). The theatrical exhibition will take place starting June 23 at the Laemmle Santa Monica in Los Angeles, and The Quad in New York.
The film, which premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival, is directed by Emmy Award-winner Jack Youngelson, produced by Emmy Award-winner Sian Edwards-Beal and David Beal of Green Hummingbird Entertainment, and co-produced by Chloe Hall. The film is edited by Karen K. H. Sim with cinematography by Daniel Carter. It features a score composed by David Baron and Jeremiah Fraites of the Grammy-nominated band The Lumineers, an original song by Josin, and an original end credit song by David Kushner and Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers.
“The struggles of four former U.S. military service members haunted by traumatic memories, years and sometimes decades after the events, becomes a dramatic, cathartic and hopeful story in the hands of Jack Youngelson and his team as we see the vets gradually respond to the surprisingly efficacious treatments that have only recently begun to provide relief from PTSD with vast implications for not just veterans of past and future wars but anyone suffering from the psychological aftermath of trauma,” Greenwich co-president Edward Arentz said in a statement.

© 2024 - Frestyle Digital Media
Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has acquired North American VOD rights to the psychological drama “The Desiring.”
According to the official synopsis, “The Desiring” follows “Richard as he leads a simple life until he discovers his wife is having an affair, which unlocks a hidden desire in him. Richard is a typical southern gentleman who loves hunting, work, and his wife, Claire. Life is good. However, when Claire has an affair with his friend Eric, instead of feeling betrayed, Richard finds himself attracted by the affair and starts to secretly watch.” But that’s not all.
The synopsis continues: “As he falls deeper down the rabbit hole, he’s haunted by memories of his spiritually fanatic father whose desire for something more drove him to suicide. This loss traumatized Richard, which poisoned his capacity for longing and deeper intimacy. The closer Richard gets to Claire and Eric, the closer Claire and Eric get to each other. She is finding a deeper connection with Eric that she didn’t find with Richard. When faced with losing Claire, Richard realizes that he’s never fully loved her and finally has to confront his past.” That’s quite the conundrum.

Directed by Byron Lamarque and written by Graham Pritz-Bennett, the film is produced by Lamarque and Pritz-Bennett. Joseph Gray, Suzanne Lenz, Don DiPetta, Randy Spence, Treas Ross, Laura Woyasz, Cat Lellie, Tim Perez-Ross, Pamela Hardy, David Price, H. Jazz Undy, Jessica Pruehs and Tina Reynolds star.
“The hero’s struggle in the film, for me, is akin to Iris Murdoch’s idea of a ‘loving gaze’ — the difficult task of attending to one another through a desire that is purified of selfish projection, that wants nothing but the other as she truly is, in all her devastating and wonderful separateness,” said Lamarque in an official statement.
“Graham’s script provided the richness for me to explore and expand these themes. The entire production process was definitely memorable — the writer was the cinematographer and the director was the editor — but this enabled a creative openness to explore and adapt as the film developed.”
“The Desiring” will be available to rent and own on all digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms worldwide, as well as on DVD, starting on March 1, 2024.

"Some people think of a time in a straight line… they're wrong…" K Street Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Altered Reality, from filmmaker / cinematographer Don E. FauntLeRoy. Despite an intriguing cast, this looks as bad as they come. Another spin on a miracle drug that gives special powers, which just reminds me of that Limitless movie. Oliver's life transforms when gifted a not-yet-existing miracle drug. Riches, unscrupulous pacts, and morphing of past & present create an altered reality, in this gripping tale of redemption & choices. Altered Reality is directed by Don E. FauntLeRoy and written by Charles Agron, who also produces and stars in this film. The cast includes Tobin Bell, Charles Agron, Alyona Khmara, and Krista Dane Hoffman, with Edward Asner and Lance Henriksen. Aside from some terrible mixing in this trailer, it's hard to make any sense of whatever is going on in here.
Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Don E. FauntLeRoy's Altered Reality, direct from YouTube:
Altered Reality Psoter
When Oliver Cook (Charles Agron) visits Spring Manor, a mysteriously odd caretaker named Jack (Lance Henriksen) makes an impossible request, but Oliver refuses. Jack disappears, leaving behind a miraculous drug that has yet to be discovered. Oliver manufactures the pills with the help of a new business partner (Tobin Bell), becoming wealthy in the process. However, his newly found fortune is short-lived when his daughter disappears without a trace. Oliver wants his old life back, but this deal with the devil has a no-return policy. Or does it? Altered Reality is directed by veteran cinematographer / filmmaker Don E. FauntLeRoy, director of the films Gates of Darkness and Seven Days of Grace, plus lots of other projects previously. The screenplay is written by Charles Agron. Produced by Armand Gazarian and Agron. This hasn't premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. K Street Pictures will debut FauntLeRoy's Altered Reality in select US theaters starting on February 16th, 2024 coming soon. Is anyone interested?

© 2024 - Dark Star Pictures
Dirty God director Sacha Polak's drama Silver Haze is finally coming to cinemas after running the film festival gamut, and there's a new trailer to gear you up for it.
Set in East London, the film follows 23-year-old nurse Franky (Vicky Knight), who is still navigating the physical and emotional impacts of a traumatic arson attack from her childhood. She wants justice. When she falls for her patient, Florence (Esmé Creed-Miles), they head for Florence's hometown on the coast, where her family life feels much more supportive and stable than Franky's — and it might be just the right space to finally process it all.
Knight won the Berlinale's Teddy Jury Award and was nominated for BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and a British Independent Film Award for her performance, which actually draws on her own childhood experience of surviving a deliberately started fire.
Silver Haze premiered last year at the Berlin Film Festival before screening at the BFI London Film Festival, and will hit cinemas in the UK and Ireland March 29 — U.S. release TBC. Before then, you can catch it at BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival.
Dark Sky Pictures debuted the official trailer for Silver Haze, the award-winning drama starring Vicky Knight as 23-year-old Franky who has spent most of her life seeking revenge for the fire that left her with physical and emotional scars as a child until she meets and falls for one of her patients.
Also starring in the film are Esmé Creed-Miles, Charlotte Knight, Archie Brigden, TerriAnn Cousins, and Angela Bruce
Release Date
Directed by Sacha Polak, Silver Haze world premiered at Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Teddy Award Jury prize, and will open in select theaters on March 1 and on VOD on March 12.
Synopsis
Franky (Vicky Knight), a 23-year-old nurse, lives with her large family in an East London borough. Obsessed with a thirst for revenge and a need to assign blame and guilt for a traumatic fire that happened 15 years ago, she is unable to build any meaningful relationship until she falls in love with one of her patients – Florence (Esmé Creed-Miles). They escape to the coast where Florence lives with her more open-minded patchwork family. There, Franky finds the emotional shelter to deal with the grudges and scars of the past.
Review
Loud and Clear review gave the ‘deeply impactful’ film a perfect 4 of 4 stars, writing “With Silver Haze, writer and director Sacha Polak creates a multi-layered story that is sure to encourage self-reflection from the viewer. Perfect for fans of realism, the character’s humanity, displayed in front of an unrelenting backdrop of an unforgiving Britain, firmly situate Silver Haze within the social realist genre.”
Describing the film as ‘a great little gem’ in their review ScreenAnarchy wrote, “In the tradition of British kitchen-sink realism of Lynne Ramsay and Andrea Arnold, and humanist makeshift family dramas of Kore-eda, Polak and Knight create an emotionally resonant film about forgiveness and finding peace via self-reflexive storytelling. Knight is a natural born actress and the camera (captured by DP Tibor Dingelstad) adores her.”
It continued, “Her brevity in using her life story and stigma she carries on screen is quite remarkable. Sensitively written and directed with clear eyes, Silver Haze is a great little gem and the first great discovery of 2023.”

SUPERSEX Trailer (2024) Alessandro Borghi
SUPERSEX Trailer (2024) Alessandro Borghi
SUPERSEX Trailer (2024) Alessandro Borghi, Rocco Siffredi Biopic, Drama Series
© 2024 - Netflix
Loosely based on the experiences of real-life porn sensation Rocco Siffredi, known as the “Italian Stallion,” Netflix’s “Supersex” isn’t actually very sexy at all. Instead, the seven-part series, created by Francesca Manieri, is a tale about family, masculinity and toxic bonds. While the show, which stars Alessandro Borghi in the lead role, has some interesting chapters, the surrealist elements — including some hallucinatory moments and the bizarre way some of the sex scenes are filmed — make it more than a biographical account. Instead, it’s an overly complex examination of relationships and the vices people indulge in to escape their emotional turmoil.
“Supersex” opens in Parigi in 2004 with the world-renowned Rocco speaking at a sex convention. Still youthful and energetic, he shocks the porn world by announcing his retirement. For Rocco, porn acting has always been more than just a job, and to understand why, Manieri and the series’ directors turn their lens to the Italian Stallion’s past.
Series opener “Superpower” acts mainly as a coming-of-age story. Following Rocco’s retirement news, the show zips back to 1974. Ten-year-old Rocco Tano feels trapped in the impoverished rural town of Ortona and lost in the chaos of his family life. His mother is devoted to his mentally disabled brother Claudio, and Rocco lives in the shadow of his charismatic older half-brother, Tommaso (Adriano Giannini). Tommaso is Rocco’s North Star. He represents a type of freedom and hypermasculinity that appears out of reach for the men of Ortona. Tommaso also has the love of the town’s most stunning woman, Lucia (Jasmine Trinca), which only endears Rocco to him further.
In addition to examining Rocco’s family dynamic, “Supersex” zooms in on his fixation on sex, which begins at a very young age. The series unpacks his crush on Lucia and later his discovery of “Supersex,” a pornography magazine starring Gabriel Pontello. The euphoria from observing and later engaging in sex is a feeling Rocco chases across the next three decades. But his sex work comes at the expense of his mental health. It also destroys the romances and familial bonds he tries to form and maintain.
Interestingly, the birth of Rocco Siffredi, the porn legend, isn’t depicted in the series. Though the moniker is adopted from the gangster Roch Siffredi in the 1970 French film “Borsalino,” Rocco’s transformation from a sex enthusiast into a full-blown star happens in stages. As a young waiter in a Paris café run by Tommaso, Rocco notices the effect he has on women. This attention aligns with the financial and social status he hopes to achieve. Still, his burgeoning sexuality and eventual domination in the porn industry come amid his defiance of Tommaso.
Despite a lifelong admiration of Tommaso’s machismo, his brother’s treatment of Lucia, who funds their lifestyle through her sex work on the streets of Paris, slowly shifts Rocco’s point of view. An invitation to a sex club awakens previously unknown desires. Becoming a porn star gives him financial security, but his inner turmoil stems from trying to live up to the expectations his family places on him.
“Supersex” dwells far too long on Rocco’s dysfunctional brotherhood with Tommaso, giving the toxic and exhausting connection unneeded exposition. Fewer episodes and less time spent on the self-destructive café manager would have kept the storyline squarely on Rocco’s psyche. Moreover, Manieri positions Lucia’s life as a counternarrative to Rocco’s. As with Rocco’s female co-stars, she isn’t allowed the same agency and status he obtains. Women are sexualized and then vilified for being sexual in the same breath. While Lucia eventually finds herself on a new path, it’s not without suffering and sacrifice, difficulties Rocco never contends with. The pair are an intriguing juxtaposition, but this mirroring gets muddled under their dark pull toward Tommaso. Similarly, Rocco’s enthusiasm for rough sex acts is never fully explored.
Still, “Supersex” makes some smart choices. Intercourse and other types of sex are showcased, of course, but these scenes aren’t gratuitous. Instead, they illustrate Rocco’s emotional state as he deals with loss and yearning or even demonstrate his self-worth.
The penultimate episode, “Resurrection of the Bodies,” is the standout and centers on Rocco’s return to Ortona amid his mother’s illness and one of the biggest highlights of his career, winning best European actor at the Hot d’Or Awards. In 53 minutes, Rocco confronts the effects of shame and how so-called family members react to him when he’s no longer playing by their rules.
Though Rocco’s story is solidly depicted, audiences hoping for a bio-series-type narrative won’t find it here. It’s also worth noting that Netflix offers a dubbed English version, but the show is best viewed in Italian with subtitles. Overall, “Supersex” isn’t just an examination of one man’s life and career but a look at the lives people create, however unconventional, when they dare to move through the world as their most authentic selves.
“Supersex” premieres March 6 on Netflix.

Here's the offiical trailer (+ poster) for Trevor Anderson's Before I Change My Mind, from YouTube:
"When I was a teenager in Canada in the 1980s, I was often asked, 'Are you a boy or a girl?' I wish I could've let that question hang in the air unanswered, like Robin does in the film. It was a time when kids like me – or like our hero Robin – wouldn't have words like nonbinary or genderqueer to describe our genders. We'd know we were somehow different and that difference would be palpable to those around us, but because we didn't have language to describe it, we never talked about it – and we still had to survive middle school and answer more pressing questions, like: 'Who do I like?' 'Do they like me back?' 'What kind of person am I?' 'Where do I fit in?'" —Director Trevor Anderson

Set in 1987, the indie coming-of-age movie stars Vaughan Murrae as Robin, a young non-binary person whose family moves to a small town in Alberta, where they navigate the challenges of fitting into a new environment by befriending Carter (Dominic Lippa), the school bully. A Nashville Wish
By Kyla C., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 14
A Nashville Wish is the romantic country film of a lifetime. Combining drama, country music, and romance, this film is engaging and enjoyable. It has strong acting, pleasant music and, for the most part, an excellent storyline.
This film follows Tucker (Maxfield Camp) as he navigates the ups and downs of his musical career and his relationship throughout his senior year of high school and the following summer. Tucker has a dream relationship with his longtime crush, the cheer captain, Lisa (Kaileigh Bullard). However, this relationship begins to create more obstacles and challenges for Tucker as he is forced to decide whether the greatest love of his life is worth sacrificing the possibility of his lifelong dream, to record music in Nashville. With Lisa’s parents disapproving of Tucker, their long term plan for her in the family business, and her reputation in town, she also has to make a difficult decision.
The characters in A Nashville Wish are portrayed meaningfully and emotionally. Tucker and Lisa are both very dynamic characters who have deep, personal backstories. For example, we discover that some of Tucker’s motives are due to a family loss a few years back. This demonstrates even further the depth of each character and how much effort went into creating these characters and bringing them to life onscreen. The acting fully mirrors the talent of the writers. Maxfield Camp and Kaileigh Bullard have amazing chemistry as a couple throughout the highs and lows of their onscreen relationship. They are so genuine; it truly seems like they’re in love. Maxfield wonderfully accentuates Tucker’s changes through a variety of conflicts, emotions, friendships and so much more. To match the spectacular characters and acting, the music is fantastic and fits the movie in every way. Despite not being a big country music fan myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the songs that are incorporated at every twist and turn of the plot. They help express the characters’ emotions and thoughts, and also help with the setting and mood of the film. The tone of the music always matches the events occurring in the film. While the songs help move the story along, the story is a bit lacking at times. Although the plot and the concept is unique and very engaging, some of the subplots failed to engage me and ended up slowing down the movement of the story. For example, parts of the film focus on Tucker’s best friend, Chewy (Fletcher Olsen). Although the character and the acting are perfect for the film, some of the storyline involving him is really unnecessary and slow.
The theme of A Nashville Wish is that when difficult decisions come around in life, it’s important to think long and hard about your priorities so you don’t make irrational decisions. Tucker’s big decision is the main focal point of the film and this message is emphasized through his character and his decisions.
I give A Nashville Wish 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 18, plus adults. You can watch A Nashville Wish in theaters beginning February 2, 2024, and on video on demand beginning February 27, 2024.
A Nashville Wish
By Eshaan M., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 17
With a foot-tapping score, A Nashville Wish is a classic family watch that delivers exactly what it promises — a high school romance with some country music.
In a small town in West Virginia, high school senior Tucker (Maxfield Camp) has big dreams to travel to Nashville and cement his career as a country music star with his best friend Chewie (Fletcher Olson) after graduation. He falls in love with the beautiful cheerleader Lisa (Kaileigh Bullard), and she’s smitten by him as well after a serendipitous event at a concert where their favorite artist Cassie Jo Campbell (Alexis Gomez) is playing. There’s just one problem — Lisa comes from a wealthy family who owns a prominent business in town, and her parents won’t let her go to Nashville with Tucker. Lisa defies her parents, and all is set. But in a conveniently-timed scene, right before they leave for Nashville, Chewie tells her that she will ruin Tucker’s chances of becoming a star and convinces her to dump Tucker and stay home. Now Tucker is heartbroken in Nashville, and Lisa is heartbroken in West Virginia. Viewers will see how the two get back together — if at all — and the role Cassie Jo Campbell plays in Tucker’s life.
There’s no diving deep into emotions, psyche, or similar here; A Nashville Wish is among the leagues of Hallmark-esque films releasing each year, which is perfectly fine. It works as good, clean family entertainment. The acting is passable, with Camp and Olson, ironically enough, having the best chemistry with one another. A couple scenes are interestingly staged, including a musical interlude where Tucker and Lisa are in the middle of a field alone…except for a truck full of singers behind them. The cinematography is good, though, with lots of medium shots and closeups that squeeze as much emotion out of the script as possible. The music is the most striking element, as it should be in a country music-centric film. Admittedly, I’m not a country connoisseur, but the songs are amazing, both in terms of the vocals and production quality. Lee Greenwood is the most recognizable voice as Grandpa Woods. T. Graham Brown sings a country and gospel song, and the film leads Maxfield Camp, Kaileigh Bullard, and Alexis Gomez do as well.
A Nashville Wish promotes following your passion and finding a balance between personal and professional aspirations by focusing on the professional first, and then letting the personal fall into place.
I give A Nashville Wish 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 18 plus adults. You can watch A Nashville Wish in theaters beginning February 2, 2024, and on video on demand beginning February 27, 2024.
A Nashville Wish
By Ella S., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, Age 15
A Nashville Wish is a moving musical with an inspiring success story. It is set in the countryside and told by interesting, dynamic characters and impressive musical performances. I love the encouraging environment the movie creates with characters who provide support for one another.
The movie follows a recent high school graduate, Tucker (Maxfield Camp), who is an aspiring country singer. Tucker and his best friend Chewy (Fletcher Olson) are ready to hit the road to Nashville to become stars when Tucker’s dream girl, Lisa (Kaileigh Bullard), a popular cheerleader from a prestigious but strict family, suddenly and unexpectedly takes an interest in him. Unfortunately, Lisa’s parents are disapproving of Tucker’s plan, forcing Tucker to make a decision that could change the course of his future.
One thing I love about A Nashville Wish is that Tucker has a great support system – the encouragement from his family and friends is clear from the beginning. Chewy and Tucker have shared the same dream of moving to Nashville to become famous since they were in fourth grade. It is nice that Tucker has a friend who shares his interests. And for many artists, gaining family approval presents a challenge, but this is not an obstacle Tucker faces, as his parents and grandfather (Lee Greenwood) truly believe in his star potential and urge him to pursue his passions. I admire Tucker’s perseverance as well. At times, his life is hard, such as when he is struggling for money in Nashville. But music is Tucker’s dream for a very long time – he never considers giving up on it, and eventually he finds success and stardom! The singing in the movie is also worthy of praise – all the main actors have vocal training and a background in music, adding to the film’s authenticity. A Nashville Wish takes you on a rollercoaster of ups and downs, from the move to Nashville and arguments with Chewy to Tucker’s date with Lisa at a Cassie Jo Campbell (Alexis Gomez) concert. Tucker’s duet with Cassie makes the film wholesome and brings it full circle.
A Nashville Wish reminds us that determination is vital to succeed. It’s what drives you to go for your biggest goals, even when the world deals you a tricky hand. It’s also a reminder to keep your eyes on the prize and trust that the small things will work themselves out – the universe has a plan for you. So stay focused and remember to thank the people who believe in you!
I give A Nashville Wish 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 18, plus adults. A Nashville Wish releases in theaters beginning February 2, 2024, and on video on demand beginning February 27, 2024.

Universal used the mega Super Bowl platform to promote one of its big summer movies, the Ryan Gosling-Emily Blunt action comedy The Fall Guy.
The reimagining of the ’80s TV series starring Lee Majors hits theaters on May 3, after it has its world premiere next month as the centerpiece film at SXSW.
The Super Bowl ad featured Gosling crying to Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well.”
It is expected to be one of the films that launches the summer movie season that will be in need of hits.

The movie centers on Gosling’s Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who, having left the business a year earlier to focus on both his physical and mental health, is drafted back into service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie being directed by his ex, Jody Moreno (Blunt), goes missing.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, Stephanie Hsu, Hannah Waddingham and Teresa Palmer also star in the pic, which David Leitch is directing from a script by Drew Pearce. The latter pair reteams after working together on Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.
Leitch, who knows action having also helmed John Wick and Deadpool 2, has a special spot for the subject matter, as he was a onetime stuntman.
“I was excited to make a movie that portrayed the lives of stunt people,” he told the crowd at CinemaCon last year when introducing the first look at the film. “It’s very dear to me.”
Check out the Fall Guy trailer above.
Universal's new trailer for The Fall Guy has arrived for the Super Bowl. The film, which is an adaptation of The Fall Guy television series, will star Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt and is set to open in theaters on May 3, 2024 — a release date that will see The Fall Guy kick off the Summer 2024 movie season in what looks to be a big way.
The Fall Guy is directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2) and will have a different spin than the television series of the same name. Gosling is playing Colt Seavers, an out of work stuntman who finally manages to land a job, but then the star of the film he's working on goes missing. Blunt is playing a prosthetic makeup artist who has a romantic history with Gosling's stunt guy. The film also stars Hannah Waddingham, who plays the producer of the troubled film while Winston Duke plays the stuntman's best friend. Stephanie Hsu plays the missing movie star's assistant. while Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the missing star, Tom Ryder. Kelly McCormick is partnering as a producer on the project with a script from Drew Pearce who also worked with Leitch on Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Gosling will also serve as a producer with original series creator Glen A. Larson executive producing.

Here's the Official Synopsis for The Fall Guy
Here's how Universal describes The Fall Guy: "He's a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows, and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. ROSALIE Trailer (2024) Nadia Tereszkiewicz, The story of the first bearded lady attraction, Drama Movie

The female gaze is not some academic construct. It’s a real thing that shifts our ability to empathize and look at the world with a different perspective, something the new movie “Rosalie” demonstrates ably at the Cannes Film Festival this week.
Screening in the Un Certain Regard section the film, starring French-Polish-Finnish actress Nadia Tereszkiewicz and directed by French filmmaker Stephanie Di Giusto, tells a story set in the late 19th century of a woman – Rosalie – with a strange condition: She grows a beard. A real beard.
And she’s hairy on her body, like a man. What to do when Rosalie comes of age to marry, and desire all the things that women often do – love, sexual connection, motherhood?
“Rosalie” has many of the same rebellious and fierce emotions that lay within last year‘s feminist Cannes hit “Corsage,” starring Vicky Krieps as the late 19th century Empress Sissi. Though Rosalie is a nobody in a small French village, her story resonates similarly – a woman claiming her agency, demanding her right to be seen and exist in a world made rigid by received ideas.

But the world pushes back. The tendency to project shame, to “other” Rosalie conflicts with her own desire to embrace her sexuality and make others see her very evident physical beauty, despite a full, bushy blonde beard. (Trust me.) Or else she could just give in to the very real impulse to run away and join the circus.
Di Giusto trains her camera intensively on Tereszkiewicz ‘s smooth cheeks, her face, her expressive blue eyes drawing your attention even as you can’t help but notice a very bushy beard lining her jaw. The beautiful cinematography in the wild countryside contrasts with the tightly-laced, literally buttoned-up wardrobe of Rosalie, which strains to contain her.
And though her husband can’t get over it, Rosalie is not ashamed of her facial hair. She embraces her “flaw” as a way to earn a living in a small town with precious few career options for men or women. As the hostess of the local café, she grows her beard out so everyone will come in and marvel at its oddity and buy a beer. But the undercurrents of human shame and guilt, the need to point fingers at the one who doesn’t look like the others, rears its head constantly.
Tereszkiewicz dominates the screen with the bravest imaginable performance – she and the cast got a standing ovation at the premiere screening on Thurday night. There is nothing of the freak show about her difference, which takes me back to what the female gaze brings to this tale.
A rebellious spirit amid a conformist society? It feels like something that can only end in tragedy. But amid all of that, a love story arises between Rosalie and her conservative husband Abel. The redemption of that love transcends the tragedy and leaves hope at the end of this story.

Amy Winehouse‘s legacy is getting the big screen treatment.
Following the acclaimed A24 documentary “Amy,” Winehouse’s life now lands a narrative feature with biopic “Back to Black” directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. “Industry” breakout star Marisa Abela portrays the ill-fated British crooner who died at age 27.
The official synopsis reads: “The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking 2006 album, ‘Back to Black,’ that catapulted Winehouse to global fame. Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time.”
The film is written by “Nowhere Boy” scribe Matt Greenhalgh, and co-stars Jack O’Connell as Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as Winehouse’s father Mitch Winehouse, and Lesley Manville as her maternal grandmother.

Winehouse’s music, including title track “Back to Black,” was licensed for the feature, made with the full support of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Publishing, and The Amy Winehouse Estate. A first look at the film showed Abela as Winehouse in the recording studio.
Director Taylor-Johnson recalled seeing Winehouse perform live, saying in a press statement, “She wasn’t just ‘talent,’ she was genius. As a filmmaker you can’t really ask for more. I feel excited and humbled to have this opportunity to realize Amy’s beautifully unique and tragic story to cinema accompanied by the most important part of her legacy – her music. I am fully aware of the responsibility, with my writing collaborator — Matt Greenhalgh — I will create a movie that we will all love and cherish forever. Just like we do Amy.”
The film was announced in July 2022 and landed at Focus Features in January 2023, shortly before production began in London. “Back to Black” is produced by Alison Owen and Debra Hayward of Monumental Pictures, with Nicky Kentish-Barnes, Ron Halpern, and Joe Naftalin executive producing on behalf of Studio Canal.
Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, addressed the initial casting backlash to actress Abela, telling TMZ that “Marisa’s a great choice for the role, even if she doesn’t look exactly like Amy.”
Winehouse died at age 27 in 2011 from alcohol abuse. Mitch commemorated the anniversary of her passing in 2022, writing, “11 years ago Amy passed into immortality. She will always be 27 years old and she will always sing our favorite songs. And we will always miss our sweet girl.”
The film is executive produced by director Taylor-Johnson, Anna Marsh, Ron Halpern, and Joe Naftalin, with Alison Owen, Debra Hayward, and Nicky Kentish-Barnes producing. “Back to Black” is a Focus Features release.
“Back to Black” premieres May 17 in theaters. Check out the trailer below.
Focus Features has dropped the first full trailer for Back To Black, filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson’s biopic of musical trailblazer Amy Winehouse, starring Industry breakout Marisa Abela. Watch above.
The studio has also shared a new US release date for the pic. It will drop stateside on May 17. Studiocanal will still release the pic in UK cinemas on April 12. There is also a new synopsis for the pic: The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame. Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time.
Supporting Abela are BAFTA-winning actor Jack O’Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as Mitch Winehouse, Juliet Cowan as Janis Winehouse, and Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated Lesley Manville as Winehouse’s grandmother, Cynthia.
The pic is written by Matt Greenhalgh (Nowhere Boy, Control), while Giles Martin (Rocketman, The Beatles: Get Back) handles music production, and Nina Gold (1917, The Power of the Dog) was on casting. The pic is produced by Alison Owen (Saving Mr. Banks, Me Before You, Elizabeth) and Debra Hayward (Les Miserables, Bridget Jones’s Baby) of Monumental Pictures alongside Nicky Kentish-Barnes (About Time, Everest, About A Boy). Taylor-Johnson is executive producer, alongside Ron Halpern and SVP Global Production Joe Naftalin who executive produce on behalf of Studiocanal.
Taylor-Johnson, whose credits include Fifty Shades of Grey and A Million Little Pieces, has worked with musical biopics before. She directed Nowhere Boy, a feature on the early life of Beatles legend John Lennon. Abela is best known for her breakout role in HBO’s Industry.
Discussing Abela and her work on the biopic earlier this year, Taylor-Johnson said: “Discovering a talent like Marisa Abela is akin to finding gold dust. The moment she looked into the lens at her first audition, I knew she was the perfect actor to play Amy Winehouse.”
Taylor-Johnson added: “She put in an enormous amount of work, and attention to every detail and she trained daily for hours to be able to sing throughout the entire movie. She doesn’t impersonate Amy, she inhabits her.”

THE PIPER Trailer (2024) Charlotte Hope, Thriller Movie
THE PIPER Trailer (2024) Charlotte Hope, Thriller Movie
THE PIPER Trailer (2024) Charlotte Hope, Julian Sands, Thriller Movie
© 2024 - Samuel Goldwyn Films / Tubi Films
An exclusive clip from The Piper reveals a high-stakes story with sinister music.
The movie touches on authoritarianism and misogyny.
The Piper may become a standout horror movie due to its unique pairing of music and supernatural elements.
The premiere of the horror movie The Piper is just around the corner, which is why Samuel Goldwyn Films has teamed up with Collider to share an exclusive clip that underscores the high stakes involved in the story. The sneak peek also hits home because it showcases one of the final performances of Julian Sands (A Room With a View) who passed away last year. The Piper centers around a young composer who unveils a deadly secret embedded in her late mentor's concerto. The film hits theaters this Friday, March 8.
The clip from The Piper that we can share with you now reveals a game-changing moment in the story. In it, Mel (Charlotte Hope) has just made an important discovery that pushes her to urge Gustafson (Sands) not to play the music composed by Katharine (Louise Gold). To us viewers it's quite obvious that there's something sinister going on with the music, since the members of the orchestra seem to enter a trance as they play it, with no regard for their limits and physical safety — ironically, this also happens with people who get too obsessed with perfection, so there will be a fine line between reality and horror tropes.
The scene also reveals that The Piper will touch on some relevant subjects such as authoritarianism and misogyny. The clip makes it clear that Gustafson holds himself in high regard and probably sees himself as a genius — which doesn't allow room for anyone else's input, much less a young student's. His power play will surely have some consequences, but we'll have to wait till Friday to see what they are.
Who Is The Team Behind 'The Piper?'
The Piper is written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen, an Icelandic filmmaker who previously helmed Kuldi and the boogeyman horror film Child Eater. The cast of The Piper also features Kate Nichols (Cobweb), Alexis Rodney (Willow), Oliver Savell (Belfast), Pippa Winslow (The King's Man), Philip Christopher (Origin), and breakout young star Aoibhe O’Flanagan.
The movie has the potential to stand out because it's rare to see a combination of a musical setting with supernatural elements. Should Thoroddsen conduct it wisely, The Piper could surprise viewers at every turn. The clip certainly suggests a pretty dark story and horror movie fans could all be gearing up to witness one of the year's must-watch titles.
The Piper comes to select theaters on Friday, March 8. You can watch our exclusive clip above.
Check out the official trailer for the new horror thriller "The Piper," featuring one of the final performances from English character actor Julian Sands, who sadly passed away last year.
In this film, which appears to offer a dark twist on the classic Pied Piper fable, Sands portrays a world-renowned maestro with sinister intentions. The story centers around a young flutist and composer, played by Charlotte Hope (known for "The Nun" and "Game of Thrones"), who is challenged by her conductor (Sands) to push her boundaries and create music that is "dangerous and controversial." Encouraged to complete her mentor's unfinished concerto, she unwittingly summons dark and malevolent forces through her music.
Written and directed by Icelandic horror filmmaker Erlingur Thoroddsen, known for the 2017 psychological thriller "Rift," "The Piper" stands as one of Julian Sands's final performances. Sands, celebrated for his diverse filmography spanning roles in "A Room with a View" (1985), "Warlock" (1989), "Arachnophobia" (1990), "Leaving Las Vegas" (1995), and "Ocean's Thirteen" (2007), tragically went missing in January 2023 while hiking in Mount Baldy, California. Despite intensive search efforts hindered by rainstorms and mudslides, his remains were eventually discovered months later in June of last year. He was 65.
"The Piper" is set to hit theaters and on-demand platforms on March 8th.

Created by Succession writer Will Tracy, the series portrays one year within the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel. Other than Winslet as the Chancellor, the cast includes Martha Plimpton, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Hugh Grant.
On Wednesday, Max released a new teaser trailer for The Regime. Watch it below:
The trailer follows Winslet as the Chancellor of a fictional European autocracy as her powerful position is threatened by various domestic difficulties. One of the few people she trusts is a "nobody" soldier, Corporal Zuber (Schoenaerts), while keeping many of her friends, enemies, and even her husband (Guillaume Gallienne) at bay. The trailer also reveals The Regime release date is March 3, 2024.
The Regime Trailer Highlights The Show's Talented Team
Kate Winslet in The Regime
Other than its intriguing story, The Regime trailer also showcases the many talents involved in the HBO limited series. First off, Winslet is the face of it all, known for her Oscar-nominated performances in Sense and Sensibility, Titanic, Iris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Little Children, The Reader, and Steve Jobs. However, her television resume is equally impressive, with Emmy-winning performances in the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce and Mare of Easttown. Based on The Regime trailer, it appears Winslet is primed for another Emmy nomination.

21 actresses have received more than one Academy Award for acting. But who among the previous winners deserves the join that esteemed list?
Other than Winslet, much of The Regime cast are Oscar and Emmy-recognized actors. Academy Award nominee Riseborough (To Leslie) plays the Palace Manager, who acts as the Chancellor's right-hand woman. Emmy Award winner Plimpton (The Good Wife) plays the U.S. Secretary of State who seeks to protect American interests in the fictional European country, while Emmy Award nominee Grant (HBO's The Undoing) plays the Leader of the Opposition whose imprisonment inspires widespread public protests.
The Regime is also led by a talented team behind the scenes. The series is from Tracy and Frank Rich, executive producers of Succession, and it appears their new HBO show is a similar political satire. The six-episode limited series is also directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs, who have plenty of experience with palace intrigue directing The Queen and episodes of The Crown, respectively.

Chelsea Peretti is making her directorial debut in a hilariously meta fashion.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum directed, wrote, produced and stars in the new comedy First Time Female Director, which features an ensemble cast of Amy Poehler, Andy Richter, Max Greenfield, Benito Skinner, Kate Berlant, Meg Stalter, Jordan Peele and Megan Mullally, to name a few.
PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for the movie, in which Peretti plays Sam, an aspiring writer who becomes "thrust into the role of director when the Regis Theatre’s director is fired," according to a synopsis.
“Speaking of PEOPLE," Peretti, 45, says in a statement, "this movie has some of my favorite comedy people in it, who deliver gems on the confusing trappings of identity in contemporary society, the pitfalls of female leadership, the existential crisis of trying to make your work and life mean something, mob dynamics, and the distinct possibility that any one of us at any time might be an actual loser."
"I hope fans will enjoy both this PEOPLE exclusive and First Time Female Director in equal measure. Both are rooted in deep theatricality," she adds.

Deadpool is slicing his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and the record books.
The first trailer for “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which debuted Sunday during the Super Bowl, has broken the record for the most-viewed movie trailer within 24 hours with an astounding 365 million total views, per Disney.
The previous record holder was the trailer for fellow Marvel movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which had 355.5 million online views in its first 24 hours back in 2021.
Deadpool had some help from this year’s Super Bowl, which ended up as the most-viewed telecast of all time and reached 123.7 million viewers. Sunday night’s game had the highest number of people watching the same broadcast in the history of television — and it no doubt helped that superstar Taylor Swift was in attendance rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce.
“Deadpool and Wolverine” hits theaters on July 26 and marks the introduction of Ryan Reynolds‘ R-rated Merc With a Mouth into Disney’s family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadpool, who previously starred in two standalone Fox movies, made fun of Disney in the first bloody, fourth-wall-breaking trailer. Dubbing himself “Marvel Jesus,” Deadpool arrives in the MCU after being kidnapped by the Time Variance Authority, the multiverse managers last seen in “Loki,” and finds himself in the same world as the Avengers.
Though his face isn’t seen in the trailer, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine also jumps from the “X-Men” universe into the MCU in the third “Deadpool” movie. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film also includes Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Matthew Macfadyen.
Kevin Feige, Reynolds, Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce “Deadpool and Wolverine,” with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg and Jonathon Komack Martin serving as executive producers. It’s written by Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells and Levy.

LA MADRE (2024) on TUBI is a thriller “inspired by true events”. It’s also incredibly offensive. Yes, even for a TV movie. A real shame as it deals with a serious subject. Read our full La Madre movie review here!
LA MADRE (2024) is a new TUBI thriller in the true crime genre. Or really, it’s labeled as “inspired by true events”. Then again, so was Tell No Lies and this was grossly misrepresenting the real story.
This time, the story is about human trafficking with a mother doing whatever she can to get her daughter back home. Unfortunately, the amount of offensive details (to Mexicans and Mexican immigrants living in the US) are downright grotesque.
Continue reading our La Madre review below. Find it on TUBI on January 25, 2024.
This movie is bad. Really bad!
In La Madre, is about a young girl, Eva, who is kidnapped by a Mexican cartel. She lives in the US with her mom and sister, but has gone over the border to party with a “friend”.
While the kidnapping is about a ransom, it’s also about human trafficking, so we’re dealing with very serious subjects. Unfortunately, this subject isn’t really at the core of the movie. Instead, it’s the drama between family members and “mom” being tough.
We’ve seen this story many times before. However, this time it’s a woman, You know, like in The Mother or many of the other movies. Still, La Madre goes more of the 1980s or 1990s route; Tiny story and a lot of posturing!
Also, strangely, the mom quickly becomes part of the police investigation to the point that she’s wearing a police vest and running into buildings first. Of course, she can also find out things that the police have struggled with for years.
Not only is this movie offensive to Mexico and Mexicans (as well as descendants of Mexicans going back generations) in so many ways, but it’s also just really bad storytelling.
The power of language
In La Madre, virtually everyone speaks English with a Spanish accent. It does not matter if we’re actually in Mexico or the US. The issue for me is that they should be speaking Spanish with one another.
Why wouldn’t they?! The situation is dire and everyone is upset, but virtually no Spanish is spoken between them. Instead, very thick accents are used to ensure that we know they all come from Mexico. Either born or generations back.
A PRODUCTION THAT GOT THIS RIGHT
In the new Netflix series Griselda, Spanish is spoken throughout >
An example of when Spanish is spoken is when a US officer (with a Spanish-sounding name, of course) says “El Chacal”. But don’t worry, despite speaking with a woman who also has a solid Spanish accent, he translates it for her: “The Jackel”.
Okay, and a kid has no name but is simply called “El Nino”. It’s like DuoLingo for beginners but with accents instead of actual languages.
It is so grotesquely offensive on so many levels. Including how all Mexicans (or descendants of Mexicans) are either criminals, extremely naive or have been part of a gang in their youth.
Watch La Madre on TUBI now!
La Madre was written and directed by Mitchell Altieri, who immigrated from Brazil. And I have to say that I wasn’t surprised as I couldn’t imagine someone originating from Mexico would make a movie this offensive to Mexicans.
Writer/Director Mitchell Altieri is also better known as part of “The Butcher Brothers” with Phil Flores. They have made quite a few horror movies with IMDb ratings around 4, but also a few with ratings on the good side of 5.
Obviously, this is a TV movie (produced by MarVista) now on TUBI, so you shouldn’t expect too much. Having said that, I have watched many movies that are much better on TUBI and from MarVista, so it’s hardly an excuse.
La Madre is on TUBI from January 25, 2024.

‘Kuessipan’
Stream it on Amazon Prime Video.
This gorgeous French Canadian drama opens with two orbs of light approaching the camera in a dark, nocturnal frame. Slowly, the joyous faces of a pair of young Innu girls come into view, bathed in the glow of headlamps, as they delight in a night-fishing expedition with their families. “Kuessipan” jumps ahead soon after to Mikuan and Shaniss’s teen years, fraught with conflicts and complications, but that luminous sense of possibility lingers throughout. The two girls are still close, but lead entirely different lives. The studious, ambitious Mikuan dreams of going to university outside the reservation and becoming a writer, while Shaniss struggles to raise her baby with her abusive husband. The director, Myriam Verreault, beautifully mixes joy and tragedy, offering a view of Indigenous life that feels both authentic and bereft of cliché. As both Mikuan’s naïve optimism and Shaniss’s cynicism are tempered over the course of the film, they arrive at a truth somewhere in the middle: that while the world is an unfair and unequal place, they can dream of a different one.
‘Under the Fig Trees’
Rent or buy it on most major platforms.
Erige Sehiri’s film was Tunisia’s submission to the international feature category at the Oscars this past year, and it’s unfortunate that it wasn’t nominated, because this observational drama is a miraculous, and very worthy, gem. Sehiri builds a simmering, sun-swept film out of small, everyday gestures and passions. The movie follows a day in the life of a rural community of fig pickers. As the camera probes into the thickets of the fig trees, it captures the minute dramas that unfold in the cover of the rustling green leaves. Lovers — former, and to-be — flirt in these gentle shadows; women swap stories about their home lives and their dreams; the employer exploits the laborers, and they, in turn, plot to steal his fruit. The actors are mostly nonprofessionals, and their rhythms are naturalistic. Shot in tactile close-ups crisscrossed by leaves and branches, “Under the Fig Trees” gives the impression of peeking behind the veil — of being privy to the intimate spaces that those who lack privacy or leisure carve out within the tedium of survival.
‘Kaathal — The Core’
Stream it on Amazon Prime Video.
Indian cinema has seen a wave of queer-themed commercial movies since gay sex was decriminalized in a Supreme Court decision in 2018. (See, for example, the 2022 comedy “Badhaai Do.”) The new Malayali-language drama “Kaathal — The Core” is the latest entry in this trend, and one of the most sensitive and intelligent films I’ve seen about the far-reaching scourge of homophobia in a patriarchal society. In a village in South India, the respectable Mathew (the superstar Mammootty, in an audaciously unconventional role) is the local leftist party’s choice of candidate for the City Council election. But no sooner than his candidacy is announced, his wife’s divorce petition, which accuses him of having an affair with another man and neglecting her, becomes public.
What emerges is a drama that takes on difficult questions with surprisingly gentleness, eschewing scandal or violence. Mathew’s party is supportive of him, but his comrades also seem to be tokenizing him opportunistically against his will. While Mathew is spared any bullying in public, his lower-caste lover is subjected to all kinds of taunts. And in the courtroom, an extraordinary scene unfolds: Mathew’s wife (Jyothika) recounts — kindly, patiently — the pain that his refusal to accept himself and give her a divorce has inflicted on her over 20 years of arranged marriage. What begins as a case of “outing” becomes a much more complex consideration of the ways in which different oppressions are all interlinked, making freedom a fight for all of us.
‘Never Too Late for Love’
Stream it on Ovid.
A feel-good drama about an aging couple’s autumnal love story might sound trite, but Gianni Di Gregorio’s film “Never Too Late for Love” turns this premise into something fresh and funny. Astolfo, a retired professor based in Rome, returns to his ancestral home in the village of Abruzzo after being evicted from his city apartment. His decaying, 500-year-old family mansion is full of surprises: a man has been squatting there for more than a decade; the church adjacent to the building has unceremoniously taken over some of the rooms; and water leaks — nay, pours — from the priest’s quarters above into the kitchen stove below. Amid all this madness, Astolfo meets the charming Stefania — but their romance is a mere subplot. The title notwithstanding, the meat of “Never Too Late for Love” is all of the provincial pettiness that Astolfo suddenly finds himself embroiled in. Forming a community of sad-sack men with the squatter and a local handyman, our kindly hero takes on the unctuous priest and the corrupt mayor, in a small-town comedy that sparkles with unique characters and heartwarming wit.
‘My Sole Desire’
Stream it on Film Movement Plus or rent it on all major platforms.
Think “Hustlers” but with explicit nudity, queerness and a cameo by the American documentarian Frederick Wiseman. That’s “My Sole Desire,” a delightful French drama by actress and director Lucie Borleteau. Starring Zita Hanrot and Louise Chevillotte, the film exudes neon-drenched sensuality from its very first scenes, as we, along with Chevillotte’s Manon, a graduate-school dropout struggling to make rent, enter the Parisian club known as À mon seul désir. Here, in a semiprivate room, beautiful women in sexy lingerie enact inventive erotic scenarios for a paying audience of googly-eyed men (including Wiseman, at one point).
The strength of “My Sole Desire” is how tenderly it balances both the creativity that the strippers find in their craft, and the danger and precarity that always lurk in their interactions with men. Hanrot’s Mia dreams of becoming an actress, and in a moment at once hilarious and touching, incorporates Chekhov into her strip show to impress a theater director in the audience. Even as the film ventures into more melodramatic territory — Manon and Mia fall in love, bringing about complications of desire and morality — these strip performances remain exuberant and joyous, an unapologetic display of female sexuality.

Finally, he will discover who he is and where he comes from. But nothing is as it seems, and Edward will soon learn that he is linked to them by a monstrous secret.

This one doesn’t exactly look mind-blowing to me, but it does look like it could be interesting enough that I’ll probably give it a chance and check it out at some point.
Brigette Lundy-Paine can also be seen in the upcoming genre film I Saw The TV Glow, which recently screened at the Sundance Film Festival (you can read our 5/10 review HERE) and is coming our way from the folks at A24.

The first trailer dropped Thursday for Road House, the reimagining of the ’80s Patrick Swayze tough-guy classic that sees Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role and Doug Liman directing.
The reveal comes the day after Liman revealed on Deadline that he was boycotting the film’s world premiere at SXSW– it has been slated to be the opening-night film in Austin on March 8. The director, who calls the pic possibly the best work he has done, said distributor Amazon MGM Studios did not fulfill a pledge to give the actioner a theatrical release.
Today, the company said Road House will stream globally on Prime Video only beginning March 21.
Along with Gyllenhaal playing UFC fighter-turned Florida Keys roadhouse bouncer Elwood Dalton, the cast features Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almedia, McGregor, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, B.K. Cannon, Beau Knapp and Darren Barnet.
The plot revolves around a down-on-his-luck UFC fighter hired as the bouncer at a rowdy Keys roadhouse that is being threatened by baddies wanting to shut it down to build a mega-resort, with their own muscle Knox (McGregor) front and center.
Liman directed a script by Anthony Bagarozzi, Charles Mondry based on David Lee Henry and Hilary Henkin’s original screenplay. The story comes from Bagarozzi, Mondry and Henry.

FLOAT Trailer (2024) Andrea Bang, Robbie Amell, Romance

Float is a romance that explores love and hope after tragedy almost strikes, featuring stars Andrea Bang and Robbie Amell.
The story follows Waverly, who meets lifeguard Blake and falls in love while learning to swim.
Based on the YA book by Kate Marchant, Float drops on February 9.
It’s never too late to learn how to swim in the choppy waters of love. Director Sherren Lee (Someone Not There, Dino Dana, Murdoch Mysteries) explores what happens when a near tragedy turns into hope in the upcoming romance, Float. Check out the film’s stars, Andrea Bang and Robbie Amell, in the above clip from the film.
The synopsis for Float reads as follows:
“Waverly (Bang) thought she had her future figured out. She’d start her medical residency in Toronto after a summer visit to her parents in Taipei. When her plans are suddenly changed, she makes an impulsive detour to a small Canadian town, where she meets local lifeguard Blake (Amell).
After he saves her from nearly drowning at a beach party, Blake offers to teach Waverly to swim, and as the lessons continue, the two unexpectedly find themselves falling in love. But will Blake’s ties to his past and Waverly’s plans to begin a new job keep them apart once summer ends?”

In addition to directing the romance, Float, Sherren Lee helped pen the screenplay alongside co-writer, Jesse LaVercombe. LaVercombe is best known as an actor (Murdoch Mysteries, Height Markers, Air Crash Investigation), but the thespian also wrote the 2017 short, The Things You Think I’m Thinking. Check out a number of images from Float, courtesy of Lionsgate, below:
Code 8's Robbie Amell (The Tomorrow People, The Flash, The Witcher) portrays the local lifeguard, Blake, who rescues Waverly (Bang) from drowning in Float. The near-death experience takes a promising turn, though, as the two youngsters begin to fall in love. Director Sherren Lee’s Float is based on the 2022 young adult book of the same name, which found life on Wattpad, and is written by author Kate Marchant (Whistleblower).
In the book, the coming-of-age story follows 17-year-old Waverly as she leaves Fairbanks, Alaska to spend her vacation in Holden, Florida with her aunt. So, fans can already see that Lionsgate and the film's creative team have taken liberties with the source material. Coming from ice-cold Alaska to the Sunshine State comes as a shock to the teenager, to say the least. But as Waverly and Blake grow closer, summertime slowly slips away. And what’s worse is that Waverly may have to learn to let go of true love, as the summer ends, even though the teenager has finally found where it is that she truly belongs.
The PG-13 romance also stars Michelle Krusiec (One World, Nice Girls Crew, A Million Miles Away) and Andrew Bachelor (Black Jesus, King Bachelor’s Pad, Sneakerheads). Float drops Friday, February 9 in select cinemas, digitally and on-demand. Check out the official trailer below:
