Featured expert: Ben Cort
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2020
Handouts athttps://johnnysambassadors.org/ja201023/
Description
The publicized and politically charged world of drug policy has undergone immense changes over the past several years. Those changes manifest not just in policy but also in the physical makeup of the cannabis plant and products derived from components of the plant. Not only has the perception of the plant changed, the actual plant itself has undergone dramatic changes as it has been industrialized and brought into a commercial market. As public opinion has softened towards cannabis, the effects of consuming today’s marijuana remain poorly understood.
Ben openly discusses the difficulty someone with Cannabis Use Disorder finds in seeking intervention, treatment, recovery and insurance coverage.
Learning Objective:
• Understand the difference between today’s corporately produced marijuana and what grows naturally and has been consumed in the past
• Identify current forms of THC consumption including edibles and vaporizers
• Understand marijuana concentrates
• Discuss the science of today’s marijuana and the harms associated with it
Speaker Bio
From non-profits to hospitals to private programs, Ben has been a leader inside of many forms of addiction treatment and prevention. From 2017-2020, Ben was a consultant to various treatment programs, state governments, professional and collegiate athletics, and labor. The Natural Progression of Vaping to Marijuana to Opiate Abuse: A Recipe for Disaster
The Natural Progression of Vaping to Marijuana to Opiate Abuse: A Recipe for Disaster
Featured expert: William Lynch
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FRIDAY, MAY 14, 2021
Handouts available at https://johnnysambassadors.org/ja210514/
Description
With the COVID-19 pandemic 2020 has seen an increase in overdose deaths beyond the highest numbers of overdose deaths ever recorded in 2019. Youth in our country often start experimenting with alcohol, marijuana and tobacco. This can lead to the unfortunate use of other substances and development of substance use disorders (SUD) as use increases. Vaping entered the scene in 2016 and has dramatically increased amongst our youth and young adults. Vaping provides a new delivery system to obtain higher levels in the body of substances being used and abused. Many individuals have engaged in vaping and now information clearly demonstrates that there is a natural progression from vaping to marijuana to opiate/opioid abuse. This presentation will review the clinical data which shows this natural progression to truly have scientific merit.
Learning Objectives
1. To understand the increased use of vaping, especially among our youth and young adults, and how vaping enhances the levels (bioavailability) of substances causing further difficulties.
2. To obtain knowledge about the multiple different substances both legal and illicit that are being abused via vaping.
3. To achieve better comprehension on how vaping has been designed and clearly demonstrated to lead to marijuana use and abuse.
4. To understand how marijuana use contributes and progresses to opiate/opioid misuse and abuse.

Speaker Bio
Jordan de Haan is the Executive Director of the Recovery Guides. Like so many others, he first encountered behavioral health problems as a client. When I was 13, I started to experience depression and anxiety, and in the span of six months went from a happy, driven kid to struggling with suicidal ideation and failing all of my classes. I then found cannabis and felt relief for the first time in what felt like an eternity. I immediately latched on to it and quickly progressed into more and harder substances (while always keeping cannabis as a constant).
By the age of 21, I found myself facing recurring legal troubles and was broken, both mentally and physically. It was only through going to treatment that I slowly began to see that there was an alternative. Fortunately, I was connected with great young adult treatment programs that slowly helped me get my life back. While still in these programs, I realized that I wanted to remain a part of them professionally. Looking back, entering treatment for the first time was truly the point where my whole life began to change, and I yearned to be able to be some small part of that process for others as well.

How THC Can Induce Cognitive Impairment
What Parents Need to Know about Adolescent Marijuana Cannabis and Psychosis: How THC Can Induce Cognitive Impairment
Featured expert: Brian Miller, MD, PhD, MPH
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2021
Handouts available at https://johnnysambassadors.org/ja210423/
Description
Substance use comorbidity in psychotic disorders has been described as “the rule rather than the exception”, and is often deleterious to the clinical course of illness. Cannabis (marijuana) is one of the most commonly used substances by patients with schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. Modulation of the endocannabinoid system by the main psychoactive component in marijuana, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, can induce acute psychosis and cognitive impairment. Over the past two decades, there has been extensive research on the association between cannabis and psychosis. The purpose of this presentation is to synthesize recent research in this area, including associations between cannabis and psychosis risk; the epidemiology and phenomenology of psychosis and comorbid cannabis use; and associations between cannabis use and clinical course, and outcomes in psychosis.
Learning Objectives
The presentation is designed to help you:
1. Assess the evidence for an association between cannabis and psychosis.
2. Discuss the epidemiology and phenomenology of psychosis and comorbid cannabis use.
3. Discuss associations between cannabis use, and clinical course and outcomes in psychosis.
4. Discuss pupillometry as a novel marker of suicide risk in patients with psychiatric disorders.
Speaker Bio
Dr. Brian Milleris Professor of Psychiatry with tenure in the Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior at Augusta University. He earned a BS in mathematics from Vanderbilt University, a combined MD/MPH degree from The Ohio State University, and a PhD in psychiatric epidemiology from the University of Oulu (Finland). Anti-Cannabis Parenting Tactics: Changes You Can Make to Lower Risk Behavior by Your Teen

Featured expert: Bobby Smyth, Ph.D.
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FEBRUARY 12, 2021
Handouts available at https://johnnysambassadors.org/ja210212/
Description
How would you like to create the type of family environment conducive to helping your teen avoid marijuana misuse? In this session, Dr. Bobby Smyth, child and adolescent addiction psychiatrist, will share his decades of experience and research on the effects of cannabis on youth. Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug in most western countries. In Ireland, it now accounts for most new presentations to substance use treatment services. Cannabis use for most of these people commenced during adolescence. You’ll learn the sad outcomes of early youth cannabis use including criminality, drug dealing, ambivalence, and damage to relationships. Given the continued march toward legalization in the U.S., if we can’t prevent it, what can we do instead as parents to protect our children?
Learning Objectives
At the end of this one-hour webinar, parents will:
• Understand the general parenting strategies that will minimize the likelihood that a teenager will decide to use cannabis and other substances
• Understand the challenges faced by parents in implementing these strategies in a social context which is increasingly ‘pro-cannabis’
• Understand the specific parenting approaches which seem to support young people with cannabis addiction in making positive changes
Speaker Bio

He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer with the Department of Public Health & Primary Care in Trinity College Dublin. He has published over 75 scientific papers in the field of addiction. His PhD thesis examined strategies to reduce the harms arising from substance use by youth.
