Description
In this presentation, Mary Cannon, professor in the department of psychiatry, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin, Ireland, will address some of the common questions people ask about the relationship between marijuana and youth:
1. Is there a public health benefit in legalizing marijuana?
2. If cannabis were legalized, would we see lower rates of adolescent use?
3. Do states/countries that legalize marijuana see reduced youth use because the regulations protect them?
4. Does cannabis use act like medicine and reduce mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety in young people?
5. Will more cannabis use decrease the use of other substances by teens?
6. Are alcohol and tobacco more harmful to young people than cannabis?
Learning Objectives
You will come away with the factual answers to these questions from scientific research and evidence, instead of false claims.

Featured expert:Caroline DuPont, MD
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2021

Description
What if substance use disorders come down to a single choice? When a young person uses any one substance – alcohol, nicotine, or marijuana – does it increase the likelihood of using the other substances? Does not using one substance decrease the likelihood of using others? The Institute for Behavior and Health analyzed national data on youth substance use behaviors and found that for young people, the use (and non-use) of all substances is closely related. Once the decision to use a substance is made, that individual is faced with many decisions about when and how much to use, with whom to use, and whether or not to use other substances. What if the age of first use really matters? The adolescent brain continues to develop into the mid-20s, making it uniquely vulnerable to addiction: 9 in 10 adults with substance use disorders began using before age 18. Science supports a clear health standard for prevention ofOne Choice: Do not use any alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, or other drugs under age 21 for reasons of health. What if there is good news? More than ever, American youth are already making One Choice, and they are leading this new movement for youth prevention efforts across the country.
Objectives
At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will learn:
• Describe the unique impact marijuana, alcohol, nicotine, and other substances have on the adolescent brain.
• Articulate how all youth drug use is connected (why “it’s just a little weed” is not based in reality)
• Know the facts: it’s possible for young people to make the choice to be drug-free…the number of teens choosing to be drug-free is growing every day.
Speaker Bio
Dr. DuPont is Vice President of the Institute for Behavior and Health, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that identifies new ideas to reduce illegal drug use. In her role she focuses on the areas of substance use disorder treatment and youth prevention. She maintains a private practice specializing in anxiety and addiction.
Formerly she was the founding President and Principal Investigator of DuPont Clinical Research, Inc., where she directed a team that conducted studies of investigational medication for the anxiety and affective disorders.
Dr. DuPont received her MD from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, Houston and completed her training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, where for years she held an appointment on the clinical faculty of psychiatry. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. She is the co-author of numerous publications and several book chapters on anxiety and addiction.

On the one-year anniversary of her son’s death by suicide, Laura Stack will publicly tell the story of Johnny Stack’s marijuana addiction for the first time from a parent’s point of view, a poignant chronicle of the shocking descent from innocence to eventual suicide. Before marijuana, Johnny was a computer whiz with a 4.0 GPA and a perfect math score on the SAT. He was a funny, charming, handsome young man, with a college scholarship and a bright future. After marijuana, he was an abusive wraith who stole his family dog from the home and threatened to kill it without payment from his mother. With moving candor, Laura traces the first warning signs, their attempts at rehabilitation, her desperation, and his demise. Through this tragic, transparent tale, Laura hopes to use her pain and research to help parents talk to their children about the dangers of today’s marijuana on the developing adolescent mind.

Description
Teen boys face an uphill battle on the road to becoming men of integrity, character, and personal excellence. At every turn, they are under siege by a culture trying to reshape their values. Today’s youth are more likely to encounter pornography, alcohol, drugs, and sexual temptation earlier in their lives than ever before. And influential peers are pulling them toward tragic choices. When our teens are slipping away, how do we get them back?
According to adolescent therapist and certified addictions counselor John Davis, extreme opposition calls for an extreme pursuit. Parents of preteen and teenage boys must be informed, courageous, and proactive in order to maintain positive and potentially lifesaving connection with their developing sons.
Davis reveals that young men are driven by design to be extraordinary, to build, to make an impact on the world. But left unchecked, this intensity can fuel destructive behavior. Davis shares practical advice for connecting with teen boys, understanding their world, and dealing with tough issues. When the stakes are this high, parents need to be strategically involved in a whole new way to pursue their sons with a fearless love
Speaker Bio
John is the founder and President of the 2xtreme Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Colorado. John Davis carries a Clinical Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and is a Certified Addictions Counselor (CACll). He works exclusively with males – teens and young adults.

The publicized and politically charged world of drug policy has undergone immense changes over the past several years. Not only has the perception of the plant changed, the actual plant itself has undergone dramatic changes as it has been industrialized and brought into a commercial market. As public opinion has softened towards cannabis, the effects of consuming today’s marijuana remain poorly understood.
Ben openly discusses the difficulty someone with Cannabis Use Disorder finds in seeking intervention, treatment, recovery and insurance coverage.
Learning Objective:
• Understand the difference between today’s corporately produced marijuana and what grows naturally and has been consumed in the past
• Identify current forms of THC consumption including edibles and vaporizers
• Understand marijuana concentrates
• Discuss the science of today’s marijuana and the harms associated with it

THIS Is How Cannabis Can CAUSE Psychosis
THIS Is How Cannabis Can CAUSE Psychosis
Featured expert:Dr. Erik Messamore
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2020
Handouts athttps://johnnysambassadors.org/ja201009/
Description
The potential for cannabis to cause psychosis has been described in Western medical literature for more than 150 years. Modern study methods such as consumer side effect surveys, human clinical laboratory experiments, and placebo-controlled clinical trials have repeatedly shown that cannabis can produce psychosis among a portion of consumers. This should come as no surprise, considering that the biochemistry of psychosis shares several features with the pharmacology of cannabis. This talk will cover the relationship between cannabis, psychosis, and schizophrenia, including who may be at risk and how big the risk may be.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, you will understand the following:
• What psychosis and schizophrenia are
• How the pharmacological effects of cannabis overlap with the biochemistry of psychosis
• The evidence that proves that cannabis can cause psychosis
• How big is the risk and who is most vulnerable to cannabis-induced psychosis

Problems with our High Potency THC Marijuana From the Perspective of an Addiction Psychiatrist
Problems with our High Potency THC Marijuana From the Perspective of an Addiction Psychiatrist
Featured expert:Dr. Libby Stuyt, MD
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: SEPTEMBER 11, 2020
Handouts athttps://johnnysambassadors.org/ja200911/
Description
This talk is about the problems with our current marijuana, how it is not the same marijuana of the 1960s and 1970s. The “commercialization” of this drug has allowed the potency of THC to dramatically increase and has resulted in numerous problems. The talk will cover the science of addiction in terms that most people can understand and how the higher the potency, the more addictive it is and the more behavioral health problems occur as a result, especially if the use is started before the brain is fully developed (age 21-25).
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
1. Understand how today’s marijuana is not like the marijuana they may have used in the past
2. Describe the effect of THC on the developing brain.
3. Discuss how addiction happens and how addictive drugs work in the brain
4. Discuss the role high potency THC cannabis plays in addiction, anxiety, depression, suicide, psychosis, violence, and cognitive impairment.
Speaker Bio
Dr. Stuyt is a board-certified Addiction Psychiatrist and has worked in the addiction/behavioral health field since 1990. She was the Medical Director for the Circle Program, a 90-day inpatient treatment program, funded by the state of Colorado, for persons with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse who have failed other levels of treatment since 1999. She retired from this position in 2020 and is currently motivated to educate as many people as possible on the un-intended consequences seen from the commercialization of marijuana in Colorado, focusing primarily on the deleterious effects of high potency THC on the developing brain and mental health.

Parenting a Unicorn: How Your Children’s Temperament Could Drive Them Towards Risk
Parenting a Unicorn: How Your Children’s Temperament Could Drive Them Towards Risk
Featured expert: Wendy Gossett
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 2020
Handouts athttps://johnnysambassadors.org/ja200814/
Description
Society places many expectations upon us: be on time; follow the rules; sit still in class; have fun at the party; have grit; finish what you start; be competitive in sports; if you are a guy, be tough; if you are a gal, be tender.
Without intending to, parents may adopt these same expectations and place them on their kids. However, some child temperaments are rare and unconventional, so these expectations may be completely unrealistic and hindering them from becoming the magical creatures they were designed to be. Society has already told these unicorns they don’t fit in, so it is critical that parents give them the accurate message that their brain physiology was purposely designed to bring beauty and balance to the world.
Learning Objectives
After the conclusion of this webinar, you will gain an understanding of:
• The Four Temperaments and the ways Nature and Nurture can affect your child
• How to identify the four personality traits most at risk
• How opposing brain functions can be causing unnecessary turmoil in your home
• What you can do to help
Speaker Bio
Wendy Gossett is a best-selling author, speaker and parenting specialist who helps parents deepen their connection with their children by using temperament psychology and neuroscience. For over twenty years Wendy Gossett, M.Ed., has worked as an educator both for the school system and for Fortune 500 companies. In addition to appearing on Inside Edition and writing for publications like Scary Mommy, she’s the author of a comprehensive Parent’s “User Manual” for their children. This User Manual was developed because of her own struggles with her unicorn daughter, Jordan. Through temperament psychology and brain imaging, Wendy concluded that she and Jordan have completely opposite brain wiring. Even with all her experience, she still needed a user manual that would help her understand her daughter, but it didn’t exist.
Over the last 9 years, Wendy has combined extensive research with hundreds of family case studies to create the user manual she had been seeking. In this hour-long webinar, she will give you some of these key concepts, so you can feel encouraged and know you are not alone on the journey!
