What Parents Need to Know about Adolescent Marijuana Substance Free Athletics – Parent Module
What Parents Need to Know about Adolescent Marijuana Substance Free Athletics – Parent Module
Featured expert: Debbie Berndt
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FRIDAY, June 11, 2021
Handouts available at https://johnnysambassadors.org/ja210611/
Description
The recently launched prevention program, Substance Free Athletics, engages coaches, athletes, and parents, the three major stakeholders in high-school athletics, in an effort to reduce under-age substance use (marijuana, nicotine and alcohol). This new, highly targeted drug education program speaks specifically to the athlete and athletic performance versus looking at drug use generally. By focusing on the high school athlete and providing all stakeholders with a common understanding, conversations about drugs and alcohol can become more productive and choosing not to use as an athlete has a rational and potentially shared basis. In this webinar, you’ll experience the parent portion of this dynamic new program.
Learning Objectives
• Understand substances, especially marijuana’s, effect on athletes and athletic performance in particular.
• Use this new frame to engage kids in conversation about alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco use.
• Learn 21st century basics around substances that all parents need to understand (but most do not).
Speaker Bio
Debbie Berndt is the Director ofSubstance Free Athleticsand is on the Board of several national prevention organizations and a local coalition – all have the mission to reduce underage substance use. She also leadsParent Movement 2.0and was recently invited by SAMHSA to participate on a Technical Expert Panel creating a National Guide for Marijuana Youth Prevention. A parent herself, Debbie has spoken to over ten thousand parents and teens since early 2017, when she realized parents, on the front-line of youth drug use, understood very little about today’s high-potency marijuana, other substances, and almost nothing about adolescent brain development. She finds the same to be true for teens.

TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 2021 – ANTI-420 DAY CONFERENCE
Handouts available at https://johnnysambassadors.org/ja210420cort/
Description
The publicized and politically charged world of drug policy has undergone immense changes over the past several years and those changes manifest not just in policy but also in the physical makeup of the cannabis plant and products derived from components of the plant. Not only has the perception of the plant changed, but the actual plant itself has also undergone dramatic changes as it has been industrialized and brought into a commercial market. As public opinion has softened towards cannabis the effects of consuming today’s marijuana remain poorly understood.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this 45-minute webinar, participants will learn how to:
• Understand the difference between today’s corporately produced marijuana and what grows naturally and has been consumed in the past
• Identify current forms of THC consumption including edibles, vaporizers, and concentrates
• Discuss the science of today’s marijuana and the harms associated with it

How THC Can Induce Cognitive Impairment
What Parents Need to Know about Adolescent Marijuana Cannabis and Psychosis: How THC Can Induce Cognitive Impairment
Featured expert: Brian Miller, MD, PhD, MPH
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2021
Handouts available at https://johnnysambassadors.org/ja210423/
Description
Substance use comorbidity in psychotic disorders has been described as “the rule rather than the exception”, and is often deleterious to the clinical course of illness. Cannabis (marijuana) is one of the most commonly used substances by patients with schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. Modulation of the endocannabinoid system by the main psychoactive component in marijuana, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, can induce acute psychosis and cognitive impairment. Over the past two decades, there has been extensive research on the association between cannabis and psychosis. The purpose of this presentation is to synthesize recent research in this area, including associations between cannabis and psychosis risk; the epidemiology and phenomenology of psychosis and comorbid cannabis use; and associations between cannabis use and clinical course, and outcomes in psychosis.
Learning Objectives
The presentation is designed to help you:
1. Assess the evidence for an association between cannabis and psychosis.
2. Discuss the epidemiology and phenomenology of psychosis and comorbid cannabis use.
3. Discuss associations between cannabis use, and clinical course and outcomes in psychosis.
4. Discuss pupillometry as a novel marker of suicide risk in patients with psychiatric disorders.

Featured expert:Libby Stuyt, MD
TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 2021 – ANTI-420 DAY CONFERENCE
Handouts available at https://johnnysambassadors.org/ja210420stuyt/
Description
Many people believe that marijuana is not addictive, but this is not true. Especially with the higher potency THC marijuana, it is definitely addictive, more so if you start using marijuana before your brain fully develops, as in before the mid 20s. Once addicted, users can experience an uncomfortable withdrawal syndrome that encourages continued use. Using marijuana addictively can lead to other problems including psychosis, mood swings, thoughts of suicide, and cannabis hyperemesis syndrome.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this 45-minute webinar, participants will learn how to:
• Understand how marijuana use can result in addiction
• Recognize signs and symptoms of addiction/withdrawal with marijuana
• Describe consequences from regular marijuana use such as psychotic symptoms, thoughts of suicide, and cannabis hyperemesis syndrome
Speaker Bio
Dr. Stuyt is a board-certified Addiction Psychiatrist and has worked in the addiction/behavioral health field since 1990. She was the Medical Director for the Circle Program, a 90-day inpatient treatment program, funded by the state of Colorado, for persons with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse who have failed other levels of treatment since 1999. She retired from this position in 2020 and is currently motivated to educate as many people as possible on the un-intended consequences seen from the commercialization of marijuana in Colorado, focusing primarily on the deleterious effects of high potency THC on the developing brain and mental health.

The Impact of Cannabis Use on the Frequency of Psychosis Across Countries and Time
The Impact of Cannabis Use on the Frequency of Psychosis Across Countries and Time
Featured expert: Dr. Robin Murray FRS
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: MARCH 12, 2021
Handouts available at https://johnnysambassadors.org/ja210312/
Description
Much evidence demonstrates that cannabis use is associated with subsequent onset of psychosis. Our work shows:
1. The more you smoke, the greater the risk.
2. Continued use by those with established psychosis is associated with a worse outcome.
3. Experimental administration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient of cannabis, induces transient psychosis in normal subjects.
Our Trans-European study of 16 sites in six countries demonstrates that daily use of high potency cannabis has a significant impact on the incidence of psychosis. The greatest effects were in the cities where high potency cannabis was most available, Amsterdam and London, where 50% and 32% respectively of first episode cases of psychosis could be attributed to daily use of high potency cannabis. Furthermore, the incidence in London has increased steadily over the past 50 years along with availability of cannabis. The evidence that regular use of high potency cannabis is a component cause of psychosis is now sufficient for public health messages outlining the risk. Furthermore, the findings that decriminalisation and legalisation are associated with increased use and potency, suggest that the incidence of psychosis is likely to increase.
Learning Objectives
After this one-hour webinar, you will understand:
1. The effects of the main constituents of cannabis, THC and CBD.
2. In which European countries you are most likely to meet someone who is psychotic.
3. The cannabis users who are most likely to develop psychosis.
Speaker Bio
Robin Murray is Professor of Psychiatric Research at theInstitute of Psychiatry (IoP), King’s College London (KCL)and a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). His main activity is carrying out research into finding the causes of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and developing better treatments for these disorders. Robin Murray and colleagues were among the first to demonstrate that prolonged heavy abuse ofcannabiscan contribute to the onset of psychosis, and that starting early before 15 years and using high potency cannabis (e.g.skunk) particularly increase the risk.He also cares for patients within the National Psychosis Unit at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. He hassupervised 33 PhDs and 5 MD Theses (with 100% success). He is part of thePsychosis Clinical Academic Group and theNIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre. Anti-Cannabis Parenting Tactics: Changes You Can Make to Lower Risk Behavior by Your Teen
Anti-Cannabis Parenting Tactics: Changes You Can Make to Lower Risk Behavior by Your Teen
Featured expert: Bobby Smyth, Ph.D.
ORIGINAL WEBINAR: FEBRUARY 12, 2021
Handouts available at https://johnnysambassadors.org/ja210212/
Description
How would you like to create the type of family environment conducive to helping your teen avoid marijuana misuse? In this session, Dr. Bobby Smyth, child and adolescent addiction psychiatrist, will share his decades of experience and research on the effects of cannabis on youth. Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug in most western countries. In Ireland, it now accounts for most new presentations to substance use treatment services. Cannabis use for most of these people commenced during adolescence. You’ll learn the sad outcomes of early youth cannabis use including criminality, drug dealing, ambivalence, and damage to relationships. Given the continued march toward legalization in the U.S., if we can’t prevent it, what can we do instead as parents to protect our children?
Learning Objectives
At the end of this one-hour webinar, parents will:
• Understand the general parenting strategies that will minimize the likelihood that a teenager will decide to use cannabis and other substances
• Understand the challenges faced by parents in implementing these strategies in a social context which is increasingly ‘pro-cannabis’
• Understand the specific parenting approaches which seem to support young people with cannabis addiction in making positive changes
Speaker Bio
Dr Bobby Smyth is a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, who has acted as clinical lead across three adolescent addiction services in Dublin for over 14 years. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer with the Department of Public Health & Primary Care in Trinity College Dublin. He has published over 75 scientific papers in the field of addiction. His PhD thesis examined strategies to reduce the harms arising from substance use by youth. He is co-author of the bookAdolescents and Substance Use: The handbook for professionals working with young people. He has been a member of the National Advisory Committee on Drugs & Alcohol.
