In his presentation at the 1st Czecho-Slovak Covid-19 Conference RNDr. Tomáš Fürst, Ph.D. talks about the crisis of evidence-based medicine and the use of data for decision-making and management in the context of the covid-19 epidemic. The critical state of working with data in epidemic management is illustrated by the Czech PREVAL study, untargeted non-pharmacological interventions and questions surrounding vaccine registration studies.

At the 1st Czecho-Slovak Covid-19 Conference MUDr. Soňa Peková, Ph.D. presents laboratory data on the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which show an unprecedented variability of the virus in a short period of time. She returns to questions of the origin of the virus and describes the non-standard behavior of the virus, where individual waves in a closed area lose mutations of the previous wave. She sheds light on the principles of synthetic genomics and the questions they raise in the context of the covid-19 epidemic, as well as the general risks and ethical issues associated with synthetic genome interventions.

In his lecture at the 1st Czecho-Slovak Covid-19 Conference prof. MUDr. Vojtech Thon, Ph.D. talks about mucosal immunity. He discusses the relationship between mucosal and systemic immunity to SARS-CoV-2 and comments on the development of immunity based on data from the PROSECO study involving 30,000 people. The study shows significant seropositivity of anti-SARS-CoV-2 memory IgG antibodies in the population, even in subjects who have not been tested by PCR. Antibodies are becoming a new diagnostic feature of SARS-CoV-2 infection, however, they are not interpreted in this way at the level of epidemiological data. In the context of diagnosis and management of the epidemic, the lecture also deals with appropriate procedures for early treatment of covid-19.

In his presentation at the 1st Czecho-Slovak Covid-19 Conference RNDr. Jiří Šinkora, Ph.D. discusses cytotoxic T-lymphocytes as the primary line of defense against viruses in the context of the covid-19 epidemic and the pressure on vaccination of the population, including children. He describes the mechanisms of cellular defense against foreign substances, compares the effectiveness of mucosal antibodies vs. T-lymphocytes. He deals with childhood immunity affected by thymic function, a decrease in thymic function with age, and the impact of this fact on immunity against SARS-CoV-2 in the elderly population.

In her lecture at the 1st Czecho-Slovak Covid-19 Conference MUDr. Hana Zelená, Ph.D. focuses on antibodies as more reliable evidence of past infection and subsequent immune response than just PCR positivity. In addition, antibodies demonstrate a past immune response to the infection. With the more sensitive VNT method, we reliably detect neutralizing antibodies in some people after infection, even though they have a negative IgG immunochemical result (EIA, CLIA) at the same time.

In the lecture at the 1st Czecho-Slovak Covid-19 Conference prof. RNDr. Omar Šerý, Ph.D. covers methods for detecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the human body and in the environment. The technical part deals with sampling, transport, RNA isolation, RealTime PCR, evaluation of results and antigen tests. The research part then deals with the detection of coronavirus in the tissues of people who died of covid-19 and the detection of coronavirus in the environment.

In the lecture at the 1st Czecho-Slovak Covid-19 Conference prof. MUDr. Jiří Beran, CSc. brings an epidemiological view of the correct concept of cause and effect. A wrong view is the virus as a cause and a positive test as the effect, while in the correct concept the cause equals a sick person and the result is death. Procedures for what to do in the epidemic, whether it is possible to define a risk group, how to protect it, how to stop the flow of people to the hospital and other related issues will also depend on this.

In the lecture at the 1st Czecho-slovak Covid-19 Conference prof. RNDr. Jaroslav Turanek, DSc. focuses on current vaccines against covid-19 infection, which are used around the globe. He discusses the mechanisms of action of genetic vaccines and aspects of observed side reactions in relation to factors such as biodistribution, nanoparticle size and their composition. He deals with methods of testing the quality of individual vaccines with examples of the structure of some vaccines and presents a unique method of flow nanocytometry for characterization of vaccines.

Scientists, doctors, lawyers and other experts met at a conference in Prague on January 27, 2022 to share their knowledge about the covid-19 epidemic. Senators Alena Dernerová, Jitka Chalánková and Jan Žaloudík talk about the support and importance of this 1st Czecho-slovak Covid-19 Conference, the protection of freedom of speech and the need for professional discussion.
