A TEENAGER has died after a rare condition left her with the body of a 100-year-old
Ashanti Smith had been living with the ultra rare premature ageing condition Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, which saw her age eight years for every year of her life.

Tragically, the 18-year-old died on July 17, telling her heartbroken mother that she had to “let me go”.
Her mum, Phoebe Louise Smith said her daughter lived her life to the fullest and had refused to let the illness affect her “loud and beautiful spirit”.
Despite her body being the equivalent of a 144-year-old when she passed away, Ashanti was still able to enjoy turning 18 in May with a night out, drinking her favourite cocktail.
The teen died with her mum, dad Shaine Wickens, 33, and a family friend, Kayleigh Cartwright, 25, by her side.
Distraught mum-of-four Phoebe who lives in West Sussex has now shared details of her daughter's funeral, which she hopes will feature four white horses, feathers, Pride flags and BTS memorabilia - as Ashanti was a huge fan of the K-Pop band.
Her friends have launched a JustGiving page to help crowdfund for the send off which they say will help celebrate her life.
Phoebe said: "Ashanti's life was a joy. Even though progeria affected her mobility, it didn't affect anything else.
"She was a typical, stroppy 18-year-old and I loved everything about her. She was brilliant, she was gobby. She spoke her mind and everyone knew it.

What is Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome?
PREGORIA is a rare condition which is sometimes referred to as the ‘Benjamin Button’ condition
Progeria causes accelerated ageing, with sufferers commonly displaying ailments associated with old age.
The Progeria Foundation says: “Children with Progeria begin to display many characteristics of accelerated ageing within the first two years of life.
“Progeria signs include growth failure, loss of body fat and hair, aged-looking skin, stiffness of joints, hip dislocation, generalized atherosclerosis, cardiovascular (heart) disease and stroke.
“The children have a remarkably similar appearance, despite differing ethnic backgrounds. Children with Progeria die of atherosclerosis (heart disease) at an average age of fourteen years.”
People with progeria often have small, frail frames compared to their heads, and have a distinctive appearance of a shallow jaw and pinched nose.
They also suffer full-body alopecia – where they have no hair.
Often the physical appearance caused by their condition becomes more pronounced as they get older.
"It didn't affect her heart, her willpower or the way she felt about herself - she felt beautiful every day. I made sure of it every day.
"Everyone loved and adored that little girl. She touched their hearts so much with her willpower.”
On the day Ashanti died, Phoebe said she had been walking around the park as normal, and had even enjoyed a KFC.
“Then it came on suddenly and it was about half an hour.
"She struggled but she said 'Mum, I love you. You've got to let me go'."
GIRLS' NIGHT OUT
Phoebe insists that Ashanti had been treated like other teenagers and had even tried a Sex on the Beach cocktail with her mum and her friends to celebrate her 18th birthday.
Phoebe said: "She was louder - louder than me - and I'm a very loud person.
"There are photos of her first getting ID'd. We all took her out to the

Amanda leaves behind a three-year-old daughter, while Amália's son is just six months old.
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being questioned by police.
The sisters were forced to lift up their hair into a bun before the suspect fired the fatal bullets, Jornal de Brasília reports.

One of the children who died was three-year-old Bernice Nantanda Wamala. She was sleeping over at a friend’s home in March when she and her friend consumed the poison-laced cereal.

“She was healthy, happy, and dancing on Saturday, then the next day she’s gone,” Mirembe told the Toronto Sun.
The suspect is according to Toronto Sun, the ex-boyfriend of the surviving toddler’s mother. The two apparently ended things the month before the said incident but remained friends.
Police say that Ngugi laced the Golden Morn cereal with a controlled substance he retrieved from his place of work .
“Both children required hospitalization. One of the children, due to the consumption of the cereal, died in hospital. The other child recovered after a lengthy hospital stay,” Detective Matthew Wighton of 41 Division said in a statement on Monday.
A probe into the incident by the police and Ontario Coroner’s Office wound up with Ngugi’s arrest after it was established that the cereal was deliberately contaminated.
Ngugi is still in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
A GoFundMe page started to help raise money for Wamala’s funeral has so far amassed more than Sh2 million.

Who is involved in the assassination of President Jovenel Moise? The names of Claude Joseph, Léon Charles, Marky Kessa mentioned in the text
¿Quién es quién en el asesinato del presidente de Haití? The big question posed by the special envoy to Port-au-Prince of the Colombian newspaper El Espectator trying to provide some answers. Something that is certain for the moment, unlike the amalgamations of Guichard Doré and Alfredo Antoine, the Haitian opposition would have found itself above the fray.
The montage is produced by the Colombian newspaper El Espectator. Look with your eyes.
Wednesday, July 21, 2021 ((rezonodwes.com)) - Who is who in the assassination of the President of Haiti? There is little detail on what happened on the night of July 6-7 in Haiti's presidential residence. The medicolegal report on Jovenel Moïse reveals that his murder was savage and even involved acts of torture: 12 bullets, including one in the eye, as well as a fractured skull are the marks left by the assassins.
And although authorities have made progress in the investigations, more and more names are added to the list of suspects in the assassination. So far, it is known that the masterminds allegedly planned the crime during a meeting at a hotel in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. There are photos of the meeting allegedly attended by financial officials and the masterminds of the assassination.
Police arrested 23 people, including 18 Colombian ex-servicemen who were part of the assassin squad and five American citizens of Haitian descent; 24 presidential security agents were placed under precautionary measures.
Here are the main personalities suspected in the assassination, according to the Colombian daily El Espectador :
Christian Emmanuel Sanon
On Sunday, July 11, Haitian police chief Léon Charles said three men had been arrested as alleged sponsors of Moses' murder, but on that day he only gave the name of one. alone: Christian Emmanuel Sanon, 63, doctor and pastor of Haitian origin who has lived for many years in Florida, United States. According to the investigation, Sanon contacted a Venezuelan security company called CTU, based in the United States, to recruit members of the commando that allegedly carried out the assassination.
“ He entered Haiti at the beginning of June. He was accompanied by some of the mercenaries who were originally supposed to ensure his safety. The mission changed when one of the attackers was presented with a court order to bring in the president, ”Charles reports. Sanon was reportedly contacted by the mercenaries when the Haitian national police blocked the advance of the commando who had just committed the crime.
During a raid on Sanon's home, they say, police found six shell casings, around 20 boxes of bullets and a DEA cap, which they say links him to the murder as the hitmen who broke into Moïse's house posed as agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). He is now in detention.
Antonio Intriago
Colombians arrested in Haiti and charged with alleged participation in the murder said they were hired by the Miami-based CTU Security company run by Venezuelan Antonio Enmanuel Intriago Valera, according to the Miami Herald on July 12.
" The CTU of Intriago is officially registered under the name of Counter Terrorism Unit Federal Academy LLC, and was incorporated in Florida in 2019 under its name, and has filed annual reports during the two successive years ", reports the American newspaper . A source who claims to have met Intriago in Venezuela told the outlet that the man was known to provide firearms, gun parts, and military and police equipment, such as bulletproof vests.
State license records show that Intriago is licensed to provide security services and carry a firearm. “A man of many contacts, the mysterious Venezuelan who sometimes calls himself Tony sold security equipment to the Sweetwater Police Department. Intriago has also supplied products to private security companies in Latin America and its Instagram page shows that his company has trained potential security forces , ”a Nuevo Herald post read.
Walter Veintemilla
He runs a small financial services company in Miramar, Florida called Worldwide Capital Lending Group, and Haitian authorities have accused him of helping finance the assassination project. The Washington Post reported on July 15 that Christian Emmanuel Sanon met with several people, including Antonio Intriago and Walter Veintemilla, in Fort Lauderdale on May 12 to discuss the future government of the country once Moses is no longer in power, with Sanon becoming the new Prime Minister of Haiti.
Worldwide Investment Development Group and CTU Security would set up a private security force to protect Sanon until he becomes president of Haiti, according to an unsigned draft document obtained by the Post. " Sanon would finally reimburse them for their services using the country's assets, according to the

Assassination Attempt on Mali Transitional President
Authorities in Mali on Wednesday said they had opened a probe into an attempt to assassinate strongman interim president Assimi Goita,
Goita was the figure behind two coups in less than a year in the Sahelian country.
Prosecutor Bourama Kariba Konate said in a statement that an inquiry has been opened “to shed light on the event.”
Goita was whisked away after a man armed with a knife lunged at him after prayers for the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha at a mosque in Bamako. He later appeared on state TV to say he was doing “very well” and downplayed the significance of the assault.
The suspect has been described only as a teacher but most of his identity has not been revealed.
He remained in custody on Wednesday while police interviewed witnesses, commissioner Sadio Tomoda told AFP.
Bamako was calm after the assault, according to AFP journalists. Wednesday was a public holiday to mark the Eid Muslim festival.
The attack capped months of political turmoil in Mali.
Goita, a special forces colonel in his late thirties, staged a coup last August that ousted elected president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita after weeks of protests over graft and rising insecurity arising from jihadist insurgency in the north.

Is Organized Crime Tied to Haiti President’s Assassination?
A convicted cocaine trafficker is among the suspects that authorities in Haiti are pursuing in connection to the middle-of-the-night murder of former President Jovenel Moïse, raising questions about whether organized crime had any role in the high-profile assault.
Rodolphe Jaar, a former drug smuggler and US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) informant, is wanted by the national police for murder, attempted murder and armed robbery alongside former Haitian government official Joseph Félix Badio and well-known opposition politician John Joël Joseph, Le Nouvelliste reported.
According to local media reports, National Police Chief Léon Charles also announced the arrest of former rebel group leader Gilbert Dragon and businessman and US resident Christian Emmanuel Sanon for their suspected involvement in Moïse’s assassination. Authorities are still looking for several other fugitives presumed to be connected to the crime, including a Venezuelan businessman who owns a security company allegedly linked to the murder.
This comes just one week after an armed commando of foreign mercenaries allegedly shot the president 12 times at his home in Port-au-Prince early July 7, killing him and wounding First Lady Martine Moïse. At least 26 former Colombian soldiers and two other Haitian-Americans are suspected of participating in the attack.
However, some of the Colombian soldiers - 21 of whom have been killed or arrested - told The New York Times that they had been recruited to “fight gangs, improve security, protect dignitaries and democracy and help rebuild a long-suffering country,” not kill the sitting president. Authorities in Haiti are also looking into members of the former president’s security team, none of whom were injured in the killing.
SEE ALSO: Who Was Behind the Killing of Haiti's President?
In Jaar’s case, the Dominican Republic’s National Drug Control Agency (Dirección Nacional de Control de Drogas - DNCD) arrested him in mid-2013 in the capital city of Santo Domingo, where he had reportedly been living in a luxury hotel. US prosecutors indicted Jaar, who also used the alias “Whiskey,” earlier that year on charges he conspired to smuggle cocaine into the United States.
Court records show that Jaar later pleaded guilty to those charges and was sentenced to 46 months in prison. At his sentencing hearing in 2015, his lawyer called the case against him “slightly unusual” because he was “cooperating with the DEA at the time of the offense, making them aware of a drug shipment that was coming into Haiti, a 425-kilogram load of narcotics. And he was in contact with agents that were on the ground.”
In other court filings related to his plea agreement, Jaar admitted to helping smuggle cocaine from Colombia and Venezuela, through Haiti and on to the United States between early 2010 and April 2013. Jaar “was present at negotiations concerning the shipment of the cocaine from Colombia and/or Venezuela to Haiti and assisted in these negotiations. [He] was in charge of arranging security so that the cocaine load could land in Haiti at a clandestine airstrip,” according to court documents.
InSight Crime Analysis
There is still little clarity on who actually fired the shots that killed the former president and why. But dividing the political from the criminal is extremely murky in Haiti. Armed gangs have long brokered mutually beneficial deals with politicians, who secure political support in exchange for turning a blind eye to criminal activity.
And while the systematic sacking of state resources through government corruption has often acted as one of Haiti’s main criminal economies, the country has also been exploited by international drug smugglers. It has for years acted as a key stopover point for South American cocaine shipments, despite not grabbing as much attention as its neighbors in the Dominican Republic.
Arguably one of the most prominent cocaine traffickers to emerge from Haiti in recent years was Beaudouin "Jacques" Ketant. He was eventually convicted in the United States for operating a smuggling ring that bribed local police and other government officials to move hundreds of tons of cocaine from Colombia’s Medellín and Norte del Valle cartels through Haiti and into the United States.
Ketant claimed to have paid millions in bribes to former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. “He turned the country into a narco-state,” Ketant infamously charged in a Miami courtroom in 2004. Aristide denied those claims and was never charged but was ousted and forced into exile after a second US-backed coup d'état in 2004. He returned to Haiti in 2011 and is now battling COVID-19 in Cuba. In 2015, Ketant was released from prison and deported back home.

Rapper shot 64 times right after leaving jail
A Chicago-based rapper was shot and killed after he was struck by 64 bullets across the street from the jail that he had just been released from on Saturday, July 10, 2021.
According to the police report, rapper KTS Dre was ambushed by more than one assailant in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago shortly after exiting the infamous jail, the Chicago Tribune reports.
An unidentified 60-year-old woman who was with KTS Dre, whose birth name is Londre Sylvester, was struck once in the knee, but she is expected to survive. A female bystander was reportedly grazed in the mouth by one of the dozens of bullets.
“It appears Sylvester was the intended target while [the women] were inadvertently struck,” the police report states as obtained by the Tribune.
Not surprisingly, KTS was rushed to a local hospital where he was officially pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m. on Saturday. Ironically, KTS had a target-looking tattoo on the front of his neck.
KTS was outfitted with an electronic monitoring device, then released. He was walking with the older woman to a waiting vehicle when “several unknown (suspects) exited two separate vehicles and all began to shoot in Sylvester’s direction, striking him numerous times,” according to the police report.
Police are hoping that the shooters will be identified as the block where KTS Dre was shot is equipped with multiple surveillance cameras. The police report stated that the assailants got into different cars after the shooting and took off in different directions.

HAITIAN HEAD PRESIDENTIAL GUARD Dimitri Herard, VISTED COLUMBIA HE IS A UNDER US ARMS INVESTIGATION
HAITIAN PRESIDENTIAL GUARD Dimitri Herard, visited Colombia a few weeks before ASSASSINATIONDimitri Herard, the head of the General Security Unit of the National Palace (USGPN, by its French acronym), is the subject of a US law enforcement investigation related to arms trafficking in Haiti, according to multiple sources both inside Haiti and the United States. Earlier this week, the president of Haiti was assassinated in what Haitian government officials have claimed was an elite commando raid of the president’s private residence. As head of the palace guard, Herard is one of the individuals most responsible for the safety of the president. The USGPN is responsible for securing both the palace and the president’s private residence.
On Thursday, July 8, the chief government prosecutor in Port-au-Prince requested that Herard present himself for questioning in relation to the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. A source close to the deceased president, requesting anonymity out of fear for their life, claimed that Moïse was personally aware of the US investigation into Herard, and that Moïse had told them that “the US is taking care of it.”
Herard, in 2012, was one of a small group of Haitians sent to Ecuador under then-president Michel Martelly to train at the Eloy Alfaro Military Academy. He eventually entered the president’s palace guard and became head of the USGPN in February 2017 after the inauguration of Moïse. Despite Herard’s high-level presence within the USGPN, he also operates a private security company. The practice, while a clear conflict of interest, has become increasingly common among police officers in recent years.
In April 2020, Carl Frederic Martin, a Haitian-American and former US Navy officer, together with the sister of Dimitri Herard, created Tradex Haiti S.A., a security company. Another company, this one Florida-based and owned by Martin, received a $73,000 State Department contract in November 2019 to provide “riot gear kit[s]” for a specialized unit of the Haitian National Police (PNH).
In late August 2020, I reported on Martin’s State Department contract, the new security company he had formed with a relative of Herard, and their attempts to create a weapons manufacturing company called HOFSA. The activities of Martin and Herard came directly after the arrest of businessman Aby Larco, accused of being a significant source of arms trafficking in Haiti. Larco and Martin had formed a security company together years earlier, though they eventually ended the partnership. Seven days after Larco’s arrest, Martin and a relative of Herard filed the paperwork to incorporate their new arms manufacturing company, though its business license was eventually revoked.
Three days after the publication of the late August report, a “news” website was created that quickly published a fake news article alleging I had been paid by members of the Haitian elite to destabilize the country. “Coming back to Haiti to further destabilize a democratically elected government will prove to be harder for time to come,” the unsigned article warned. The website’s “About Us” page is a direct copy and paste from the website of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, replacing the organization’s name with “Haiti News Hub.”
In the more than a year and a half since Larco’s arrest, however, the flow of black market weapons into Haiti has only increased, fueling rising insecurity and violence. Kidnappings reached a peak of nearly four a day early in 2021, and, according to security experts, have provided armed groups with significant resources to purchase new weapons and ammunition. Individual ransom payments have reached hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In late June, former police officer and leader of the G9 Family and Allies, Jimmy Cherizier, held a press conference with dozens of armed men displaying high-powered weapons. Police officers and government officials often complain that they lack the resources or firepower to properly counter armed civilian groups. At the same time, many of those groups draw upon support from current and former police officers as well as politicians and private sector actors.
US law enforcement has been increasingly interested in the network bringing illegal weapons into Haiti and its relation to kidnappings. In March 2021, two individuals, Peterson Benjamin and Lissner Mathieu, were arrested in Haiti and brought to the United States. Benjamin was quickly indicted on charges related to his alleged involvement in a criminal enterprise responsible for the kidnapping of a US citizen in Haiti. Mathieu was apparently arrested in connection with a decade-old drug trafficking case. When he was arrested, Mathieu had in his possession a badge from the National Palace. The government denied that he had ever been employed in the palace.
