Inclusion Through Exclusion: The Culling of Academics in Canadian Universities
For the slides, preliminary data sets and more resources: https://pagewizardgames.com/diepledge/
You can find my talk as well on YouTube: https://youtu.be/mtXJVlJ8cAU
We explore the issue of exclusion in academic institutions in Canada, with a focus on Computer Science. Academic culling in our research is the active (intentional or unintentionally) removing of plurality from universities through requiring compelled speech, or placing (new) barriers to academic appointments to serve ideological/political/religious purposes [in this case, so-called "diversity, inclusion, and equity" (DIE)]. Namely, we study a (new) practice that discriminates against academics that do not value or wish to pursue goals of DIE, or academics that abstain on the basis of academic principles/standards.
Our interest in this topic largely came as a result of observing incongruities in our professional experiences in inclusion and those of DIE. There are many grounded and reasoned ways one may disagree with DIE and its methods; whether one agrees or disagrees with DIE, a concerning trend has grown in public Canadian universities of overstepping the boundary of respecting the intellectual autonomy of academics. Have our public universities focused so hard on identity and related political/ideological pursuits, that they have an identity crisis? What does this mean for the next generation of students, our academics, and the future of scientific research in Canada?
We focus on what we call DIE pledges, a term for requiring applicants or academics more broadly give their commitment to DIE in some form: As a job requirement, a statement, or, to participate as an activist. Fundamentally, like other ideological pledges built on non-academic requirements (or even anti-academic requirements, as in this case), pledges such as these are an afront to intellectual autonomy of academics and violate the merit principle.
The following is a preliminary investigation based on our 5+ year study of this topic. We monitored job advertisements posted on CS-Can and other Canadian institutions, that may require a Computer Science PhD. The primary focus was monitoring CS-Can, where job advertisements for faculty positions in Computer Science Departments in Canada are regularly posted. Concerning increases in these practices have occurred.
To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first attempt to document/report this in Canadian STEM fields.

The State of Academic Freedom in Canada
Criticizing one's own university is a part of academic freedom. What happens to academics when they disagree with a policy and wish to engage with it publicly in Canada these days? Apparently writing online the word "Yikes" and defending concepts like impartiality and educational standards is enough to have you forced into a meeting with your Dean at a Canadian university, and more. Unlike in many circumstances where a mobbing occurs and this stirs the pot, no such thing happened here. Dr. Page joined his university to address university standards concerns, and he definitely found some!
What's a university without academic freedom?
After this incident, Dr. Page experienced months of neglect, including taking away one of his courses, eventually leading to the administration pushing him out of his position using a term in Dr. Page's contract about his obligations for in-person teaching (that Dr. Page wanted to do [this was disrupted by U of Regina's COVID-19 policies]) Dr. Page defended for months his students to ensure all his students can continue to take courses without disruptions, under the COVID-19 mandates/policies students/faculty were experiencing.
To this date, Dr. Page has never experienced any complaint (in conversation or formally) from his students about these LinkedIn comments. Any claim to merit about concerns of how welcoming Dr. Page's classroom at University of Regina is never was substantiated, any claim of concern by administration were alleged, spoken of anonymously, and never substantiated. All of Dr. Page's lectures from his time at University of Regina are publicly archived:

Pi Day 2022 Talk - Limits of Approximability, Magic Numbers in Scheduling
In the study of algorithms, we desire provably-correct algorithms that efficiently solve problems. In this talk, the area of approximation algorithms is introduced in the context of determining the existence of efficient algorithms for hard optimization problems. If P is not equal to NP, which is one possibility for the outstanding and fundamental P vs. NP problem, then for some intractable problems there may only exist polynomial-time algorithms that can compute approximately close answers to optimal solutions, but no better than multiplicatively by some “magic number”. The talk will briefly introduce a mixture of algorithms, computational complexity theory, and recent developments focusing on intractable problems intersecting scheduling and graph theory.
On March 14, 2022 I delivered this talk for University of Regina's Pi Day Event (with the Dept. of Math & Stats), organized by the Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Statistics Student Society (MASS). I am very thankful for their invitation to give this talk! Thank you for the time to talk about Algorithms!
Remark: I did not mention it properly given the time constraints, but Svensson in 2010 proved P|prec|Cmax has no 2-\epsilon approximation algorithm, relying on assumptions of a variant of the Unique Games Conjecture. So if you believe that variant is true, then List Scheduling is optimal with respect to the approximation ratio!

Why Algorithms Matter: A Common Misunderstanding in Computing
Why is it that we need Algorithms researchers, rigour when problem solving, in Computer Science? It is great imagination and intuition to solve problems mathematically that often leads to the discovery of how we can solve new problems in computing, or better understand processes. Why can't we just assume better computing power means we can do more things with computers? Dr. Richard Hamming, describes and answers this succinctly back in 1962. This is an important aspect of why things such as foundational theory in Computer Science (which is framed in the manner Hamming describes), not just computing as in using machines, matter. It is the ideas, the algorithms, and their provable guarantees, that lead to correct computational results.
Excerpt from "Logic by Machine"

Richard Hamming is a pioneering computer scientist, the inventor of Hamming Codes and considered the founder of coding theory.
