It is renowned for its scenic views overlooking the city. The temple's history is intertwined with a dark period during the 18th century plague. During the reign of King Rama II in 1820, a cholera outbreak led to the death of more than 30,000 people in Bangkok. As a result, Wat Saket became a main location for cremating the dead, as it was situated outside the city walls. The temple's capacity was overwhelmed by the immense number of corpses, leading to vultures feeding on the bodies, creating a grim image and reminder of the deaths. Today, vulture sculptures at the temple serve as proof of this dark history.
