The Book of Jude: The Acts of the Apostates - A Modern Day Clarion Call by Pastor Melissa Scott, Ph.D.
Jude 1:14-16 And Enoch Also Prophesied of THESE Jude Series #18
Jude points out from an apocryphal source that Enoch spoke and prophesied of these ungodly people who creep into the church (through the “side door”) and pervert the message of the gospel. These preach a doctrine of no consequences for ones actions, rather than no ultimate condemnation to those in Christ. Jude gives examples out of the Old Testament (Cain, Balaam, and Korah) to show there are always consequences for those who deliberately defy God.

Jude (KJV)
1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
2 Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.
3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.
6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.
9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.
11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.
14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.
17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.
20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:
23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
25 To the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Jude 1:20-21 Build Yourself Up in the Word Jude Series #21
Every point that Jude makes in his corrective letter is to counterbalance the apostasy creeping into the church. After telling us why we need to contend for the faith he tells us how: build on the Architect’s plans, pray with the help of the Holy Spirit, keep ourselves in God’s love, and look for the mercy of our Lord. We have ups and downs on this spiritual battlefield, but being part of the body of Christ means we have a purpose in His body.

Keep Looking for the Mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ Jude Series #24
In counterbalance to those who crept into the church and led people astray, Jude admonishes us to keep ourselves in the love of God, expectantly awaiting God’s mercy. In this message we get an incredible insight into what God’s mercy looks like, both to us and in the man-to-man relationship. We can see God’s mercy in the context that Jude intended and also apply it to our own lives by staying focused on what God has done for us. In so doing we accomplish the purpose of keeping ourselves in the love of God and staying the course toward life eternal.

Jude 1:22-23 Have Mercy On Those Who Doubt - Jude Series #25
Contrary to numerous poor translations, Jude is not instructing the saints to go out and try to “win souls”. He is telling us to have mercy on those doubters who were already exposed to God’s Word, but have listened to lies. For those beyond doubting, trying to save them is like rushing into a fire to snatch them out. As we wait on the mercy of the Lord unto eternal life, have mercy on these, hating the filth of their defiled state without hating them.

The Application of God’s Word Jude Series #23
There will always be people who misinterpret the application of God’s Word, not because it is a difficult concept, but because they make it difficult. Good works that flow out of us are from God’s Spirit in us, not of our own doing. When you talk about application, people immediately think you’re speaking of works. Instead of thinking works, we should be asking God how to apply what we’ve read, to our lives. Philippians 1:27

Jude 1:21 How to Keep Yourself in the Love of God Jude Series #22
In Jude's instructions for how to contend for the faith, we are told to keep ourselves in God's love to us. The natural man cannot do this, thinking that God is always against him. The spiritual person understands we have fallen short of the mark, but God has gifted His forgiveness of sins to us. Our desire to please Him and to know Him better through the rhemas builds up the relationship, which is further cemented by our gratitude towards Him and our attitude towards God and the things of God.

Jude continues to warn against the ones who have crept in unawares: they are a hidden danger, appearing promising, but ready to lead us astray and shipwreck our faith. The church needs to have proper moorings to avoid the judgment that will come upon these ones.

Jude’s Doxology: To Him Who is Able to Keep You and Hold You Faultless Jude Series #28
Jude 1:24-25 - Jude concludes his letter with a doxology that is essentially in the form of a prayer in the Greek. He emphasizes that when we are in peril of being shipwrecked in our faith by false teachers, Christ has the power to keep His focus on us as a shepherd watches over a flock, standing us up again firmly before Him when we stumble in our walk. Because Christ has washed us in His blood, He can present us blameless before the Lord, and we will have the privilege of being received with joy into the Lord's presence if we keep on faithing and contending for the faith.

12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Amen.

When You Encounter People Full of Hate Jude Series #27
When dealing with those who are full of hate, ultimately the Word of God is our guide; not how we feel or what the crowd is doing. Hatred is foolish. And whether it’s the result of a bruised ego, or borne out of anger; if someone is full of hate, God’s Spirit is not with them. Pray for people that are full of hate; by doing so you keep yourselves in the Love of God.
Proverbs 10, Genesis 39, Titus 3, 1 John 2

Proverbs 10 (KJV)
10 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.
3 The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.
4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
6 Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
7 The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.
8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.
9 He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.
10 He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.
11 The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.
13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
15 The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.
16 The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.
17 He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.
18 He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.
19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.
22 The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
23 It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
24 The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
25 As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.
27 The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
28 The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
29 The way of the Lord is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
30 The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.
31 The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

Ephesians 4:31-32 What Mercy Looks Like Jude Series #26
Some people are very “James-like” in their understanding of scripture; the Word never takes root, only the surface becomes important. And like James they may be very zealous for the Lord, but in an extremely misguided way. What do you do with these people? Don’t try to reason with them, and don’t hate them. The message from Jude is have mercy on them.

Ephesians 4
1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 But ye have not so learned Christ;
21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil.
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Ephesians 3:17 To Know the Love of Christ- Footnote to Jude Series #22
A footnote to Jude #22 on How to Keep Yourself in the Love of God: Paul in Ephesians shows us another picture of how to know the Love of Christ. Although there is no way to exhaust or to fully know the Love of Christ, we can have the foundation, and the foundation dismisses the guilt and the different things with which people still frustrate the grace of God.

Pastor Melissa Scott exposed the truth of the Love of Christ.
Ephesians 3 King James Version
1 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,
2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Find a Place Where the Word of God is Central Jude Series #20
An addendum to Jude Series #19; this is an example from 1 Timothy 4 of the need to find a place where the Word of God is front and center. The church today has departed from teaching the Gospel. The Pope was talking about plastic bottles in the ocean and other protestant ministers are departing from their reason for being. A minister’s burden must be a burden from the Lord for the Lord.

Pastor Melissa Scott exposed the truth of 1 Timothy 4
1 Timothy 4 King James Version
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
11 These things command and teach.
12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Jude 1:17-19 Ignore the Mockers, Keep the Faith Jude Series #19
In a unique style, Jude calls to memory the saying that there will be mockers of God in the last days. These mockers have a childish behavior towards the things of God, their focus is egocentric, and they cause divisions in the body of Christ, which should be united. In contrast, the faithful minister has a singular focus to bring forth the Word of God, the faithful listeners hear it, and in so doing, both build up the body of Christ. Jude’s admonition is a clarion call to the faithful: ignore the mockers, keep the focus and keep the faith.

Pastor Melissa Scott exposed the truth of Jude.
Jude 1 KJV

Jude 1:11 The Gainsaying of Core Jude Series #16
Core, from Jude 1:11 and Korah from Numbers 16 are one in the same. In every generation there are those who creep into the church and engage in the gainsaying of Core: coming against the Word of God. Core, a close relative to Moses, was unwilling to face Moses directly. Instead he spread his disgruntlement to others, convincing men of renown to outnumber and rise up against the man of God. His perspective was completely warped, his path was marked with egregious lies, and he treated the position he was specially chosen to do as menial and trivial. Jude highlights Core last; a stark reminder that God will judge the rebellious. This is why we are to keep ourselves in the love of God and keep contending for the faith.

10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.
11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Amen.

Jude 1:11 Becoming Empty in Pursuit of Reward - Jude Series #15
A look at the Greek for Jude 1:11 adds more substance to the understanding of those that go the way of Balaam. They are those that become empty of God’s spirit in pursuit of a reward here on earth.

Pastor Scott exposed the error of Balaam in Jude Series # 14
Jude King James Version (KJV)

Jude 1:11 The Way of Cain: The First False Religion Jude Series #12
In Jude’s warning to the church about those who crept in unawares preaching heresy, he compared their actions to those of Cain. Cain tried to substitute his works for faith, even though God had prescribed the way to come to Him. His responses to God were peppered with falsehood, his laborious efforts were futile, and he acted in fear instead of faith. Jude 1:11 The Error of Balaam; Balaam's Ass - Jude Series #14
A casual reading of Balaam's story makes him look like a pretty good man, obediently delivering the Word of God. However, Jude, John and Peter each point to Balaam in a negative way, warning against prophets for hire and the introduction of syncretism. Balaam enticed the children of Israel to worship other gods, bringing the people into apostasy as he lined his own pockets.

Jude 1:11 - What Was in the Heart of Cain? - Jude Series #13
There are interesting insights into the story of Cain and Abel found in sources outside the Bible. Pastor Scott gives examples from the works of Josephus, the Book of Jubilees and more that tell various versions of Cain and his motivations.

Jude 1:7-8 The Grace of God Extended to Moses - Jude Series #10
This message in the Epistle of Jude is both an admonition and an encouragement. An admonition to not be moved away from the doctrine that keeps us going from faith to faith, despite those that creep into the church with “special revelations.” It is also an encouragement to never forget the grace of God. The same grace that God extended to Moses: sending Michael the archangel to contend for his body despite his mistake which cost him the promise land, is the same grace He extends to us who have answered His call.

Jude 1:7 Sodom and Gomorrah: A Warning Through the Ages Jude Series #9
Adding on to the message from Sunday, Defection from God, Jude Series #8, (Link below) Pastor Scott shows how throughout the Bible there are various scriptures that “add color” to what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah. Throughout history, God makes them an example to those who would live ungodly lives. Warnings have been sounded throughout the ages, pointing again and again to the same thing.

Jude 1:9 The Wrestling Match Over Moses’ Body Jude Series #11
Jude makes reference to the death of Moses with details beyond what we have recorded in the Bible. Reading from various Targums and Testaments, the records are consistent with what Jude records. Adding the information from the various sources to the records in our Bible, fills in some missing pieces to the puzzle.

12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Amen.

Jude 1:5-7 Defection From God - Jude Series #8
Jude points out in a style of triplicates, three examples of defection from God and the accompanying ruin: the children of Israel, the angels, and Sodom and Gomorrah. The escape is to keep contending for the faith. Defection can occur in any form, but faith toward God occurs one way: in simplicity, in truth, through Christ.

1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
2 Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.

Jude 1:4 Beware of the Subtle Outside Forces - Jude Series #7
Obstacles that come into the church are very subtle; and every single writing in the New Testament confronted the same problem. Jude is a warning to not be persuaded and to stay faithful. The battle for the church will always be to keep these things out of the church.

Jude 1:3-5 Contending for the Faith Against Apostasy Jude Series #6
Apostasy is in our nature, and it can creep into the church very quickly. Jude wrote his epistle to put apostasy in check, reminding us that while God delivered His people from Egypt, He destroyed that first generation for their faithlessness. Even after the people saw God's miracles of deliverance in Egypt, they were quick to turn from Him and forgot what He had done. We need this wake-up call to be vigilant and keep contending for the faith.
