Henry Reviews NIRVANA - Nevermind Album from 1991 - Episode 3
Henry Reviews NIRVANA - "Nevermind" Album from 1991 - Episode 3
Henry reviews one of the most iconic albums from the "grunge" era of the early 90's - "Nevermind" from Hall of Fame band Nirvana. The songs and videos from this album were played incessantly on MTV and everywhere else, making Nirvana one of the most influential bands at the time, and ushering in a new genre of music from Seattle with a new sound - GRUNGE.
Henry is joined by his brother-in-law Lavar who has always loved Nirvana and this album in particular, as he came out of the hip hop world with his music. Lavar and Henry talk about stories of the first time they heard this band and this album and the impact it had on them and what they loved about the sound from the very beginning. Tom talks about his first time hearing the album and realizing the 80's hair band era was over! Henry discussed his old band Peralta and their chance of getting a record deal in 1991 was quashed by this new style of Grunge music coming on the scene. Henry, Lavar and Tom talk about what they think the epic "baby cover" for Nevermind really means and their interpretation of it.
Nevermindis the secondstudio albumby the AmericanrockbandNirvana, released on September 24, 1991, byDGC Records. It was Nirvana's first release on a major labeland the first to feature drummerDave Grohl. Produced byButch Vig, Nevermind features a more polished, radio-friendly sound than the band's prior work. It was recorded atSound City StudiosinVan Nuys,California, andSmart StudiosinMadison, Wisconsin, in May and June 1991, andmasteredthat August at the Mastering Lab inHollywood, California.
Written primarily by frontmanKurt Cobain,Nevermindis noted for channeling a range of emotions, being noted as dark, humorous, and disturbing. It includesanti-establishmentviews, anti-sexism,frustration, alienation, and troubled love inspired by Cobain's broken relationship withBikini Kill'sTobi Vail. According to Cobain, the sound of the album was influenced by bands such asPixies,R.E.M.,the Smithereens, andMelvins. Though the album is considered a cornerstone of thegrunge genre, it is noted for its musical diversity, of course it's now classic hard-edge songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which was an anthem for youth at the time, but also includes acoustic ballads ("Polly" and "Something in the Way") andpunk-inspiredhard rock("Territorial Pissings" and "Stay Away").
Nevermindbecame an unexpected critical and commercial success, reaching the top 10 on charts across the world. On January 11, 1992, it knockedMichael Jackson'sDangerousout of the number one spot on the USBillboard200and was selling approximately 300,000 copies a week. The lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", reached the Top 10 of the USBillboardHot 100and went on to be inducted into theGrammy Hall of Fame. Its music video was also heavily rotated on MTV. Three other successful singles were released: "Come as You Are", "Lithium", and "In Bloom". The album was voted the best album of the year inPazz & Jop critics' poll, while "Smells Like Teen Spirit" also topped the single-of-the-year and video-of-the-year polls. The album also garnered the band threeGrammy Awardnominations in total across the34thand35th Grammy Awards, includingBest Alternative Music Album.

Henry Reviews Scorpions Blackout Album - Episode 1
Henry Reviews Scorpions Blackout Album - Episode 1
Henry reviews the legendary "Blackout" album, the 8th studio album by the hall of fame German rock band Scorpions. Henry uses his story telling and unique perspective as a professional musician to give his take on each of the legendary tracks from this underrated platinum album from 1982! We also go over some great stories from Henry's past related to the Scorpions.
After losing his voice during the writing of the album, lead singerKlaus Meinehad to undergo surgery on hisvocal cords and was uncertain as to whether or not he would be able to record. Demos of the material were recorded with singerDon DokkenfromDokken, a then-unknown band fromLos Angeles. However, none of those recordings are featured on the album and Dokken is only credited with backing vocals. Meine ended lead singer on all tracks with Don Dokken backing him up on several songs.
InKerrang!issue 12, guitaristRudolf Schenker said that he could not choose between his guitar solos on "China White" so the US and European releases differed in this detail. Henry likes the American version of the guitar solo on that track better, but encourages you to listen to both!
A self-portrait of artistGottfried Helnwein is featured on the cover of the album. Schenker portrays this character in the epic "No One Like You" music video which was one of the highest rated MTV videos ever.
