The Bigamist (1953) - Ida Lupino - Drama
Plot
Harry and Eve Graham want to adopt a child, as Eve is infertile. Adoption agent Mr. Jordan advises the couple that, as a matter of routine, he needs to investigate their backgrounds and current lifestyle thoroughly. Harry responds with a worried, pensive look, which concerns Jordan.
Harry and Eve live in San Francisco and are co-owners of a business, with Harry traveling to Los Angeles frequently for work. Jordan arrives at Harry's Los Angeles office looking for information about Harry. The receptionist calls around to all the hotels, but none of them have a Harry Graham registered. One or two of the managers remember Harry, but he hasn't been checked into their hotels in months. Jordan is puzzled and even more determined to investigate Harry. He visits the address listed in the phone book for a "Harrison Graham" and there finds Harry, with a different wife—and a baby. When Jordan is about to call the police, Harry tells him, via a lengthy flashback, how he got into this situation.

(eng sub) Flamenco / Duende y misterio del flamenco (1952) - Edgar Neville - Musical
Title changed to "Flamenco" when it was first released in the USA in 1954, this is a program of Spanish songs and dances with the emphasis on "flamenco" or gypsy contributions. The USA version has an English narrative written by Walter Terry, the dance critic of the "New York Herald Tribune" newspaper. Heading the cast are Antonio (I), Pilar Lopez and Maria Luz, three of Spain's foremost dancers of the time, accompanied by members of the Ballet Espanol. Filmed in Cinefotocolor in which orange and blue dominated, a combination that should appeal to the fans of Auburn University athletic teams. Distributed in the USA by Martin J. Lewis.
Quintaessential Dance film features brilliant and frenetic choreography and embellished thanks to its chromatic aesthetic and a high-caliber Flamenco score , adding sensual re-creations , rural and urban sightseeing and other social manners . Enjoyable film very moving in its style with a superb Flamenco soundtrack and unique photography style , though being really necesary a perfect remastering because of the film copy is washed-out . At the same time , watching several Spanish locations , showing a real sightseeing of the marvellous cities and villages . The dazzling and devastating dancing set new standards for this splendid and wildly successful fim. An Andalusian musical movie of the late Fifities , being essentially a ballet , that's why it is musically riveting , it is almost , also, perfect and laced with glimmer cinematograph in Cinefotocolor by Heinrich Gärtner as Enrique Guerner . Heading the glorious cast are the mythical dancer Antonio , the veteran Pilar Lopez and the young Maria Luz Galicia , three of Spain's foremost dancers at the time , along with gypsy dancers , and other contributions as the members of the Ballet Espanol . All of them dancing fabulous Flamenco music , Bulerias , Seguidillas , Boleros de Panaderos , Sonatas composed by Father Antonio Soler, Intermedio from the opera Pepita Jimenez composed by Isaac Albeniz , Spanish dance number 11 composed by Enrique Granados and many others . Special mention for the fascinating dances performed by Antonio on attractive background location , in El Escorial and Ronda Bridge , the latter he plays an impressive Martinete at the end.
The motion picture was competently written and directed by Edgar Neville and narrated by the known actor Fernando Rey . Director Edgar Neville , Count of Berlanga de Duero , was considered to be one of the best filmmakers in the Francoist time . He was a notorious playwright , screenwriter and director , Edgar opted for a humor not politically compromised , which he cultivated in all the artistic genres : theatrical stage , poetry, novels, cinema, painting and others . From their privileged position he criticized without harshness the customs of the bourgeoisie at that time , in which Neville belonged himself as well as the kitsch and the absurd manners . Together with Tono, Antonio Mingote and Mihura, he wrote for the humor magazine La Codorniz , successor to the weekly La Ametralladora, which Mihura published in San Sebastián. Neville stood out above all as a good filmmaker . ¨La vida en un hilo¨ or ¨Life in a thread¨ was a great success both, the public and critic . It was first conceived as a film and later it was turned into a musical comedy by his son Santiago . It is a smiling reflection on the mechanisms of chance, as well as a plot against the bourgeoisie , being understood as a disease of the soul , against corniness and narrow-mindedness disguised as common sense . The play ¨El baile¨, which ran for seven years on stage , it was also a big hit , and reviewing social habits, as well . It is about a loving trio that triumphs over time and generations . Adapted to the cinema, it was distinguished for its agile and brilliant dialogues , in which tenderness and nonsense alternate here and there . Edgar directed a large number of films , some of them written along with his sweetheart actress Conchita Montes , who usually played too. In Edgar Neville's prestigious cinematic work stand out the following movies : La torre de los siete jorobados 1944 , La vida en un hilo 1945 , El crimen de la calle de Bordadores 1946 ,El traje de luces 1946 , Nada 1947 , El marqués de Salamanca 1948 , El último caballo 1950 , La ironía del dinero 1955 , El baile 1957 , Mi calle 1959 . He also made documentary , such as : La Ciudad Universitaria , Juventudes de España , Cante Jondo, and this Duende y Misterio del Flamenco, among others . Rating : 8/10. Above average . Essential and indispensable watching for Flamenco aficionados.

A secret society holds a meeting in Limehouse, chaired by lawyer Thaddeus Merrydew. (Silent) La aldea maldita / The Cursed Village (1930) - Florián Rey
Late Silent Spanish drama.
The English speaking world's knowledge of Spanish film before the death of Franco is pretty well zip - Bardem and Berlanga, Saura and, for the intrepid, Paul Naschy. There is a similar gap in knowledge of the Italian film, ending with WW2. You could say the same thing about many foreign language cinemas - notably Asian - but it does demonstrate the limitations of conventional film history and suggest the pattern it follows.
Out of this void comes LA ALDEA MALDITA. When a storm destroys the crops and plunges the village into even more misery, the people make a mass ox cart exodus. Arrogant farmer Larrañaga gets into a fight and is detained but wife Viance leaves. In more prosperous times, he retrieves her from degrading city work but continues to humiliate her.
Commentators home in on it's treatment of the oppressed state of women facing Castillian macho. It is alarming to notice how good a match it is with YOL, made in a totally different culture decades later. Rey was considered to be sympathetic to the Communist point of view but rather more interesting are the places where the film departs from cliché. Viance abandons her young child, blind father-in-law and jailed husband for the bright lights. The local money lender is shown as benevolent and more able to accept her faults than the town gossips - who are men.
Striking images of broad hat men in black, in the crumbling stone building community, are enlivened by touches like the kitten entering the door hole in the middle of the demo or the comic letter writing.
La ALDEA MALDITA comes late in the history of Spanish silent films. It is the work of possibly their most respected director of the day and it is certainly impressive. A sonorised version was prepared but has (probably fortunately) been lost and a somewhat battered copy of the silent film remains. The Filmoteca Espagnol copy has no translation.
Originally released in a sound version, which has disappeared. Decision to add sound came post-production and required additional shooting and work in Paris, France. Only the silent version has survived.

This film marked a turning point in the history of horror films. The zombie subgenre continues where Romero established it in 1968. This is the first and by far the best of the zombie films. It is a very cheap film, made for about $100,000, with unknown or non-professional actors and shot in an amateur style by a young man dedicated to advertising.

M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder (1931) - Fritz Lang (Eng. Sub.)
Stars: Peter Lorre, Ellen Widmann, Inge Landgut.
Thriller. Mystery. In this classic German thriller, Hans Beckert, a serial killer who preys on children, becomes the focus of a massive Berlin police manhunt. Beckert’s heinous crimes are so repellant and disruptive to city life that he is even targeted by others in the seedy underworld network. With both cops and criminals in pursuit, the murderer soon realizes that people are on his trail, sending him into a tense, panicked attempt to escape justice.
"M" (German: "M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder", lit. "M – A City Searches for a Murderer") is a 1931 German thriller film directed by Fritz Lang and starring Peter Lorre in his breakthrough role as Hans Beckert, a serial killer of children. An early example of a procedural drama, the film centers on the manhunt for Lorre’s character, conducted by both the police and the criminal underworld.
The film's screenplay was written by Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou and was the director's first sound film. It features many cinematic innovations, including the use of long, fluid tracking shots, and a musical leitmotif in the form of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" whistled by Lorre's character. Now considered a timeless classic, the film was deemed by Lang to be his magnum opus. It is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time, and an indispensable influence on modern crime and thriller fiction.
