We signed up for this year's Sierra Trek on The Fordyce Trail in Northern CA. It was our first time ever doing an organized run, but not the first time we've run Fordyce. It has been about 9 years since running it in our 1990 Jeep YJ Wrangler and probably more than 13 years prior to that. The JK has never been on it and I have never been in the driver's seat on this trail. Fordyce Trail is a HARD trail - probably harder than The Rubicon Trail. I preferred Fordyce over The Rubicon because it has a lot less off camber spots. We started the trail around 6:30 am and as you'll see, we encountered some situations that left us on the trail for 12 hours before we made it to Meadow Lake. So far this year, the JKU has gone through some rough trails and it's time for some love! After months and months and months, the JKU is FINALLY getting some much needed TLC! We ordered new Tube Fenders several months ago and have been on back order. We originally purchased different fenders but got tired of waiting so we ordered these from DV8 Off Road. They are pretty awesome so far but feel a little thin. Guess we'll find out how they hold up. As an added bonus, we bought armor for the rear corners from EVO Manufacturing. So Awesome! The Rubicon Trail is best known for it's incredible four wheeling for all types of vehicles and skill levels. This is a simple video of the amazing beauty of and surrounding The Rubicon Springs. Beautiful landscape that makes for gorgeous views, relaxation and cooling off in the water during the Summertime. Great area to take a day off from wheeling and enjoy nature's finest. Or a little relaxation then wheel up Cadillac and back just in time for more r&r. Please note that this is private property and camping is $20 per night / per vehicle. Be sure to check schedules of the area as there are numerous events during prime wheeling season. Also, watch for snakes around this area. We did have a baby rattlesnake outside our tent at the Dirty Dozen Campground one year. This year we saw a snake in the water right near the shore that actually swam over my dogs paw as he was lying there. "Old Sluice" - or often times called "Middle Sluice" - is a trail in the middle of The Rubicon that is often bypassed. If starting The Rubicon from Loon Lake, Old Sluice is after Little Sluice and before you get to Buck Island. Instead of taking Indian Trail (which is basically an off-camber trek up or down a granite mountain), try this trail. Old Sluice will definitely keep you on your toes with some tight, pinchy spots. Damage is possible if proper lines aren't taken. I took some incorrect lines that Carnage4x4 Adventures had to help me out of. I think it's a fun trail. It's much quieter because not many people go this way. We went during Rubithon and had the whole trail to ourselves. It also offers some much needed shade in areas whereas Indian Trail is just a big wide open space.(Although it has pretty views.) Thanks for watching! Please let me know what I can do better. We recently took our annual 4th of July run through The Rubicon. This video specifically shows the section of Little Sluice. Most people like to bypass this obstacle, but it really isn't anything crazy. Back in the day (like 25 years ago), it was MUCH different. Many of the big rocks have been blasted and loads and loads of small rocks were brought in. If you're not interested in attempting Little Sluice, there are bypasses on both sides. Personally, I think the north side bypass is a lot harder than just running Little Sluice. I attempted to assemble Body Armor Gen 3 Tube Doors for our 2007 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited. Directions given were so poor and I couldn't even read them so I went online and downloaded some other ones. I thought this would be an easy project for me to do the initial assembly and then have Carnage4x4 Adventures help me with the actual install but I was mistaken. I am completely incapable of anything mechanical and this video proves it! Once we made the necessary fixes the doors seemed to go on pretty well. We'll be wheeling The Rubicon in our next video, so that will be our first run with the new doors. Just a note if you're looking to buy these, the rear door latch handles will face DOWN and the front door latch handles will face UPWARD. Not sure why they are different and the directions I went by did not mention anything about them being different. This is the third installment of my Ghost Towns of Nevada series. Close to Ione, Nevada, we decided to explore the old ghost town of Berlin and the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park. This town and park are very close to Ione, so if you're interested in one or the other, you may as well plan on visiting them both. Also near by is the old mining town of Grantsville. Silver was discovered by prospectors in Berlin in 1863- later developing the town in 1896. Residents peaked at 250 people in its heyday but the boom would be short lived. By 1911 the town was abandoned as people moved on to other ventures. Below the town is a small cemetery of former town residents. In 1928, fossils were discovered just above Berlin in an eroding hillside, thus becoming the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park. Excavations unearthed 40 Ichthyosaurs and remained the largest number ever discovered worldwide until 2004. There is a fossil touring area if interested. Take a drive to the middle of nowhere and checkout this interesting Ghost Town and State Park! Camping is also onsite for RV's and tents. This weekend was the VORRA Yerington 250 desert race held in Yerington, Nevada. The course laps were approximately 50 miles long and laps ran ranged from 3-6 depending on the class. We decided to enter the Poker Run during the Vorra Yerington 250 desert race on Memorial Day weekend 2021. This was our first ever Poker Run and we weren't sure what we were doing. The run itself was one lap of the race course (approximately 50 miles) with the final stop at the Chevron station in town. We started towards the end of the line, but ended up the last vehicle on the course. haha. We should have aired our tires down as it would have been a much more enjoyable ride. It was a fun trip and we would definitely do it again! We didn't have the winning hand, but we didn't have the worst hand either. Our hand started out good but ended poorly. We took a break from beating up our Jeep's this weekend and decided to head out to Nevada in search of Ghost Towns. We stayed in Yerington and branched out from there. First on our list was the Ghost Town in Pine Grove, Nevada - which is about 25 miles from where we were staying. Pine Grove was an old gold mining town that boasted 600 people and stretched a mile-long in its heyday. At the top of the town is the old cemetery. If you plan on visiting this ghost town, I highly recommend you visit the cemetery as it's my favorite part of this town. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere Nevada is an old mining town called Ione - "The Town That Refused To Die". In this second installment of our Ghost Towns of Nevada series, we explore the old town of Ione, Nevada. It came to existence in 1863 after silver was discovered in the Shoshone Range. It was also the first home of the Nye County seat - although that was short-lived. The town currently still boasts a few residents, although the population is very sparse and nothing like it's highest population of 600. Some references state that there are still around 40 people living there. When we visited, it did not seem like that many people lived there, but who knows. We did not disturb anything that looked occupied. Ione, NV is located in close proximity to the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, so if you're going to visit Ione, you better visit the State Park too! On this final day of wheeling at Sand Hollow State Park, we took the YJ on Nasty Half to redeem ourselves from the first day with the JK. Turns out the first obstacle that gave us issues on day one also beat us up on the last day. Well played Nasty Half - the trail earns its name. (Although the JK did make it a little further ;)...) Today we completed the rated 7 / 8 short trail - Triple 7 out at Sand Hollow near Hurricane, Utah. The Triple 7 Trail is an extremely short trail with not too many bi-passes but beautiful scenery. This isn't really a beginners trail, so keep that in mind if considering this one. As you'll see, a UTV ahead of us rolled in an off-camber section. This is our final video of our recent trip to Hurricane, Utah and Sand Hollow State Park. There are unseen moments as well as a few highlights from previous videos. We had a pretty intense moment in the Sand Dunes when the rear end of our Jeep kicked out as we were trying to drive up and almost rolled us. That was the first day and my initial observation of the dunes was not a pleasant one. I assume once you know the way out there, you know which lines to take but it can be pretty hairy initially. We attempted the Double Sammy Trail in our Jeep Wrangler YJ and Jeep Wrangler JK @ Sand Hollow only to get lost. Double Sammy is a 7 rated trail. It is a bit confusing to find the trail after the initial few obstacles if you've never been there before. We had the downloadable map but it wasn't much help. Would recommend going with someone who knows the trails out here if it’s your first time. On this video we accomplish the trail 'Milt's Mile' @ Sand Hollow. At 2.6 miles (full loop), this is more of an easier trail and rated 7. It still has some decent climbs / descents with some off-camber areas - good for all skill levels. I'm not a fan of off camber as my driving skill isn't great, so Carnage 4x4 Adventures drove the JK through the nervy parts. Hopefully one day I won't be as nervous because in looking at the video, nothing looks as it did in person. ;) All in all, it is a good trail to start with if you're new to this area. The sand dunes can also get pretty interesting. You can download avenza maps or All Trails to get the maps of the trails around Sand Hollow. They are kind of hard to follow, but maybe that's just me. In this video we are installing a Smittybilt roll cage on our 2007 Jeep Wrangler JK. Be sure to read all directions before doing one yourself. The padding has to go on before installation as we found out after we were done. Roll cage installed - part #B76902 - 6 piece kit. I was forced to help with this project, but it's my Jeep, so I guess it was okay. At least Sully got to join us. The install wasn't as bad as I expected. Nasty Half Trail @ Sand Hollow - rated 9. We decided to take just the JK since our trip to Utah was delayed initially and wanted to 'test things out' on an easier trail. Also since we had the crawler hauler (40' trailer), we wanted to make sure there was parking available for it. We tried using the Avenza Maps app but we were confused with what trail we were on. We took our Crawler Hauler on its maiden voyage prior to traveling to Sand Hollow along with our two Jeeps and truck camper to Prairie City OHV Park for a test run. Prairie City OHV Park has a 4x4 obstacle course for many different skill levels. This is a good spot if you're near the Sacramento / Sierra Nevada Foothills to test out modifications of your rigs. It's also a good place if you're learning how to 4 wheel. This has been the site of some Ultra 4 Off Road Racing competitions. We went to the park later in the day and it seemed like a good time to go since many other people seemed to be heading out. I am just learning how to 4-wheel, so the less people the better - although there was one guy who thought he had to share the same obstacle as us at the same time. All the other obstacles were available! And the best part - It only costs $5 to enter the park.
