Confirma hoc - Offertory for Pentecost
Day 26 of #100daysofchant
Back on day 24 I mentioned this piece. Look back to that one if you find this one a tad tricky to sing for Pentecost Sunday Mass. You need to add in a few words to the other one to match up with this one.
Alleluia.
Stablish the thing, O God, that thou hast wrought in us, For thy temple's sake at Jerusalem: so shall kings bring presents unto thee. Alleluia.

Emitte spiritum tuum et creabuntur et renovabis faciem terrae. Alleluia.
Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created, and Thou shalt renew the face of the earth. Alleluia.

Confirma hoc - the short antiphon for Confirmations and Pentecost
Day 24 of #100daysofchant
This antiphon is handy for when the Offertory of Pentecost seems too hard. Or for Confirmations.
Alleluia.
Stablish the thing, O God, that thou hast wrought in us, For thy temple's sake at Jerusalem: Alleluia.

A Magnificat antiphon for the Ascension.
O rex Gloriae, Domine virtutum, qui triumphator hodie super omnes coelos ascendisti, ne derelinquas nos orphanos, sed mitte promissum Patris in nos Spiritum Veritatis Alleluia.
O King of glory, Lord of all goodness, who ascended to heaven on this day triumphant over all, do not leave us as orphans but send us the Father’s promise, the spirit of truth. Alleluia.

Memento salutis auctor - the pre-Urbanite Hymn for the Little Office
Day 20 of #100daysofchant
Today is the feast of Mary Help of Christians, so here's another Marian Hymn.
Pope Urban VIII, way back in the 15th century, decided to fix all the hymns. ALL THE HYMNS. This is generally considered today to have been a BAD IDEA. One of the positive things to have come out of Vatican II was the restoration of some of the older hymns.
Here is the pre-urbanite version of the hymn we now know as Memento Rerum Conditor:
Memento, salutis Auctor,
Quod nostri quondam corporis,
Ex illibata Virgine
Nascendo, formam sumpseris.
Maria, mater gratiæ,
Mater misericordiæ,
Tu nos ab hoste protege,
Et hora mortis suscipe.
Gloria tibi, Domine,
Qui natus es de Virgine,
Cum Patre et Sancto Spiritu
In sempiterna sæcula. Amen.
the meaning is generally the same as the revised version, Memento Rerum Conditor.
Here's Fr Edward Caswall's translation:
REMEMBER, O Creator Lord,
that in the Virgin's sacred womb
Thou wast conceived, and of her flesh
didst our mortality assume.
Mother of grace, O Mary blest,
to thee, sweet fount of love, we fly;
shield us through life, and take us hence
to thy dear bosom when we die.
O Jesu! born of Mary bright!
Immortal glory be to Thee;
praise to the Father infinite,
and Holy Ghost eternally. Amen.

Te Lucis: Compline Hymn for Ascensiontide
Day 19 of #100daysofchant
We sing Compline each night as a family. I made booklets and put them on the internet:
https://compline.brandt.id.au
Great one to ask God to keep away nightmares.
The tune changes for each liturgical season. There are about a dozen tunes to learn.
This is the tune for the night before Ascension Thursday through to just before Pentecost Sunday.
Te lucis ante terminum,
Rerum Creator poscimus,
Ut pro tua clementia
Sis præsul et custodia.
Procul recedant somnia,
Et noctium phantasmata;
Hostemque nostrum comprime,
Ne polluantur corpora.
Præsta, Pater piissime,
Patrique compar Unice,
Cum Spiritu Paraclito
Regnans per omne sæculum.
or in English verse:
To thee before the end of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That with Thy wonted favor Thou
Wouldst be our Guard and Keeper now.
From all ill dreams defend our eyes,
From nightly fears and fantasies;
Tread under foot our ghostly foe,
That no pollution we may know.
O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, Thine only Son;
Who, with the Holy Ghost and Thee,
Doth live and reign eternally.

Benedicite gentes - Offertory antiphon for 5th Sunday after Easter
Day 18 of #100daysofchant
This Sunday we have a sung Mass, so this is a good chance to get more practice with the propers. The Communion antiphon appeared on Day 13 (17 May 2022). The Introit on Day 16 (20 May).
Benedícite, gentes, Dóminum Deum nostrum, et obaudíte vocem laudis ejus: qui pósuit ánimam meam ad vitam, et non dedit commovéri pedes meos: benedictus Dóminus, qui non amóvit deprecatiónem meam et misericórdiam suam a me, allelúia.
O bless the Lord our God, ye peoples, and make the voice of His praise to be heard: who hath set my soul to live, and hath not suffered my feet to be moved. Blessed be the Lord, Who hath not turned away my prayer, nor His mercy from me, alleluia.

I didn't realise it was so short though.
Hope everyone watches Episode 2 of The Mass of Ages when it comes out on 26th May!

Vocem Jucunditatis - with a voice of joy - introit 5th Sunday after Easter
Day 16 of #100daysofchant
This Sunday we have a sung Mass, so this is a good chance to get more practice with the propers. The Communion antiphon appeared on Day 17. The Offertory is in the pipeline - probably Day 22. The Alleluia defeated me, so I might do a separate video on how to use Chant Tools to simplify any of the propers.
Vocem jucunditátis annuntiáte, et audiátur, allelúia: annuntiáte usque ad extremum terræ: liberávit Dóminus pópulum suum, alleluia, allelúia.
Ps. 65. 1-2. Jubiláte Deo, omnis terra, psalmum dícite nómini ejus: date glóriam laudi ejus. V. Glória Patri.
Declare it with the voice of joy, and make it known, alleluia: declare it even to the ends of the earth: The Lord hath delivered His people, alleluia, alleluia.
Ps. Shout with joy to God, all the earth, sing ye a psalm to His name: give glory to His praise. V. Glory be to the Father.

Memento Rerum Conditor - hymn from the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Day 15 of #100daysofchant
This is the most common hymn in the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. My kids know this one off by heart from singing Prime most mornings.
It's also a redux of my most popular video on YouTube. I think because it was the first recording of that hymn on that platform.
1. Memento, rerum Conditor,
Nostri quod olim corporis,
Sacrata ab alvo Virginis
Nascendo, formam sumpseris.
2. Maria mater gratiae
dulcis parens clementiae
tu nos ab hoste protege
et mortis hora suscipe
3. Jesu tibi sit gloria
qui natus es de Virgine
cum patre et almo Spiritu
in sempiterna saecula.
Amen.
and an English version:
Remember, O Creator Lord,
that in the Virgin’s sacred womb
Thou wast conceived, and of her flesh
didst our mortality assume.
Mother of grace, O Mary blest,
to thee, sweet fount of love, we fly;
shield us through life, and take us hence

Christus resurrexit, boppy medieval Easter chant
Day 14 of #100daysofchant
This is a hymn my mother typed up from some scattered sources.
https://www.repleatur.net/pdf/chant/christus-resurrexit.pdf
It's not very well known, so it's a bit hard to find a translation, but here's my best shot off the top of my head, mostly:
Christ is risen, he has covered our bad things, and those whom he has loved he has led to heaven, alleluia.
Death is dead, Satan is bound, hell is wasted, the Fathers are freed, alleluia.
At morning hour, divine power arose like a strong lion, breaking the gates, alleluia.
You arise victor over death, you killing sins, give life and this stability, alleluia.
Praise to the Father Creator, the Son restored, and the Spirit, unto ages of ages, alleluia.
And the Latin text for anyone searching:
Christus resurrexit, mala nostra texit, et quos hic dilexit, hos ad caelos vexit, alleluia.
Morte mortem stravit, Satanam ligavit, infernum vastavit Patres liveravit, alleluia.
Hora matutina, virtute divina surgit leo fortis, fractis orci portis, alleluia.
Morte surgis victa: Tu nostra delicta necans, dona vitam, et hanc stabilitam, alleluia.
Laus Patri Creanti, Nato Restauranti, Amborem Spiranti, Per saecla regnanti, alleluia.
You can see from the rhyming structure that it must be relatively recent. It feels natural to sing it with a fairly strong beat.
Happy Easter!

Vado ad eum misit me & Magnificat
Day 12 of #100daysofchant
This one is new to me. See if you can hear my hesitation.
I go to him who sent me, but because I said this to you, sorrow has filled your heart, alleluia.
I love the juxtaposition of sorrowful hearts and Alleluia! There's a De Profundis - Out of the depths I have cried to Thee O Lord, Alleluia - I think towards the end of the liturgical year.
This antiphon can be found at: https://gregobase.selapa.net/chant.php?id=2168

Quae est ista - Magnificat - Catena Legionis Mariae
Day 11 / 100 day Gregorian chant challenge
The Legion of Mary enjoins its members to pray the rosary and the Catena each day. Some parts really lend themselves to chanting. I've taken the Antiphon from a Communion Antiphon from the Mass of Our Lady Mediatrix of All Graces.
I wrote about this a while ago:
https://www.ccwatershed.org/2017/09/16/catena-legionis-gregorian-chant/
The official Latin - I need to get into line with this, plus learn the Latin "Oremus" part.
Antiphon.
Fecit poténtiam in bráchio suo: * dispérsit supérbos mente cordis sui.
Amen.
The translation:
Antiphon. Who is she that comes forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array?
(Make the Sign of the Cross)
v. My soul glorifies the Lord.*
R. My spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.
v. He looks on His servant in her lowliness;*
henceforth all ages will call me blessed.
R. The Almighty works marvels for me.*
Holy His name!
v. His mercy is from age to age,*
on those who fear Him.
R. He puts forth His arm in strength*
and scatters the proud-hearted.
v. He casts the mighty from their thrones*
and raises the lowly.
R. He fills the starving with good things,*
sends the rich away empty.
v. He protects Israel His servant,*
remembering His mercy,
R. The mercy promised to our fathers,*
to Abraham and his sons for ever.
v. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit..
R. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Antiphon. Who is she that comes forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array?
v. O Mary, conceived without sin.
R. Pray for us who have recourse to you.
Let us pray.
O Lord Jesus Christ, our mediator with the Father, Who has been Pleased to appoint the Most Blessed Virgin, Your mother, to be our mother also, and our mediatrix with You, mercifully grant that whoever comes to You seeking Your favours may rejoice to receive all of them through her. Amen.

Cor Jesu, Caritatis Victima - Sacred Heart Responsory
Day 9 / 100 Day Gregorian Chant Challenge
A few years ago we had a priest keen to promote First Friday devotions. Now, the devotion to the Sacred Heart is fairly recent compared to most Gregorian chant. We can find references to Jesus heart being pierced with a lance and echoes in earlier music, but Sacred Heart hymns tend to be more recent.
This one is from Cantus Selecti, and I'm not sure of its history before that.
Here's the Gregobase link:
https://gregobase.selapa.net/chant.php?id=3987
The words:
Cor Jesu, caritatis victima, venite adoremus.
Majorem hac dilectionem nemo habet,
ut animam suam ponat quis amicis suis.
Christus pro nobis animam suam posuit,
et lavit nos a peccatis nostris in Sanguine suo.
Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui Sancto.
The translation:
Come, let us adore the Heart of Jesus, victim of charity!
Greater love than this no one has,
that one would lay down his life for his friends.
Christ has laid down His Life for us,
and has washed us from our sins in His own Blood.

Ego sum resurrectio et vita - burial Gregorian chant
Day 9 of 100 day Gregorian chant challenge.
I had the honour to sing at two funerals recently. The music for the Requiem Mass and burial and everything is so right. This chant is sung after Mass, either at the burial or if that is delayed, then it can be sung at the church.
The words come from a conversation between Jesus and Martha before he raised her brother Lazarus from the dead.
The canticle in the middle is from the Morning prayer of the Church. Prayers said on rising from bed are fitting for thoughts on the final resurrection.
Ego sum resurrectio et vita: qui credit in me, etiam si mortuus fuerit vivet: at omnia qui vivit et credit in me, non morietur in aeternum.
I am the resurrection and the life, he that believes in me, even if he dies, he shall live; and everyone who lives and believes in me shall not die forever.

Sub tuum praesidium - monastic tone
Day 8 / 100 day Gregorian Chant Challenge
This the oldest known hymn to Mary.
There is a slightly different Roman version, but we picked up the Monastic version at the Maternal Heart of Mary Church, Lewisham and it has stuck.
Here are the words:
Sub tuum praesídium confúgimus Sancta Dei Génitrix
nostras deprecatiónes ne despícias in necessitátibus
sed a periculus cunctis libera nos semper
Virgo gloriosa et benedicta
And here is the translation:
Under thy patronage we fly, O Holy Mother of God
Don't reject our prayers in our necessities
but deliver us always from all dangers
O glorious and blessed Virgin
