Erastian Church Compromise in the EFCA | Ep 20
Sadly, name calling is nothing new when it comes to church debates. While adding an “-ism” to the end of an adjective may seem like an intellectual way to create a legitimate pejorative, it has to be biblical to stick. Historically, there’s a group of government loving Christian pietists who love to be crushed by the state. They follow a doctrine called Erastianism.
If you’ve been called a Christian Nationalist and it confuses you welcome to the club. Why wouldn’t a Christian love the nation they are in. And why wouldn’t a Christian want the nation they love to embrace and adopt Christian moral systems and a Christian worldview? That just seems…. Christian, ….right?
Not according to some people who think your biblical morality is wrong. The term woke is not precise enough term for these accusers because that word is beginning to carry a lot of baggage. So, what do these accusers seem to have in common? Well, it turns out many of them are Erastianists. This doctrine was considered and rejected by the authors of the Westminster Confession. It's nothing new.
Erastianism is a doctrine that the state is superior to the church in ecclesiastical matters. It is named after Thomas Erastus, a Swiss physician and theologian who opposed excommunication as unscriptural, advocating in its stead punishment by civil authorities. Erastus never held the doctrine of Erastianism, which is a distortion of his position that assumed cooperation between Church and State.
So if someone says you’re standing in the ditch of Christian Nationalism, remember there’s a ditch on the other side of the road for all the Erastianists!
Today’s podcast discusses how Pastor David Whitney of Cornerstone Free Church in Bowie MD was attacked by some Erastianists. These Erastianists were part of the Evangelical Free Church. This is the same denomination as Cornerstone, Mt Laurel, NJ belongs to. Pastor Seth Brickley is our guest host joining us from Eureka Baptist in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin.
Fun facts discussed today – $8 Billion was given out to churches by the Federal Government in the form of PPP loans that were forgiven as long as you jumped thru their hoops.
Fun question – Why would a civil government give money to a church?

Who authorized the Government taking over Charity? | Ep. 10
What authority has God given government when it comes to charity? Has God given the government any authority to be charitable? If not government then who does God call to be charitable? Does God give the Family and the Church certain roles and responsibilities? Are those roles and responsibilities separate from the government or under the government’s authority. What role has the Bible had on creating law in America? Did the founding Father’s get our laws directly from the Bible or was there a long history between them and the Bible that we should study to understand their reasoning?
On this episode you’ll hear Pastor Jeff, Pastor Tim and Average Joe quickly answer these questions that should be obvious to anyone following Jesus Christ. The government is not called to be involved in charity in any way. In fact our founding fathers put forth great effort to clearly make that illegal but in their brevity corrupt politicians have found a way around the Constitution which only takes 27 minutes to read. That’s the same document the culture says you need an advanced degree, preferably 4 to 6 years of post-graduate work.
You’ll hear the team talk about the history that led up to government taking over most of the charitable institutions in our culture. We’ll start in 1831 and move up to 1965. We’ll briefly mention 1100 and a few other dates. Famous quotes will come from James Polk, Antonin Scalia, Lydon B. Johnson.
We hope you enjoy this episode. Please leave us a comment if you want to hear more depth on this topic or let us know what other topics you want to discuss.
Please don’t forget to send us your BLOOD RED PASTORS. If you’re pastor is speaking out against the sinfulness in the culture, we want to know. Our President is Promoting sin on Easter | EP 11
If you went back in time 30 years to explain that the President of the United States was promoting sin on Easter, well you might have a hard time getting people to believe you. Especially if you got into the detail of the types of sin he's advocating for. Then he signs off - in the name of the LORD!
Pastor Jeff and Pastor Tim join average Joe to dig into the details of Joe Biden's proclamation on Easter Day. Did he declare a day of repentance and memorial for the day our savior rose from the dead? No, His was proclamation celebrating the abuse of a specific group of people, "A Proclamation on Transgender Day of Visibility, 2024".

Iran, Israel and The Gospel of Jesus Christ | EP 13
Many Americans and especially American Christians are very concerned with the recent actions of Iran against Israel. There are many political beliefs about these events. The thing all Christians should agree on is the need to share the Gospel with those in conflict. While we touch on some of these events we're going to focus on what Islam is, why it hates Israel and how we can impact this conflict with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Christ or Chaos | EP 14
In Matthew 12:30 Jesus said, "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters." Only after a century of religious pluralism are we starting to see Jesus left no room for secularism in this statement. As Christians, we know our duty. When committing to that duty we often hear Joshua 24:15 quoted when he said, "But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
But as we all know it's not that easy. We may want Christ but it seems like most of the culture wants Chaos.
Well known for his work in Theonomy, Dr. Greg Bahnsen said of his mentor, "Dr. Van Til taught us that “There is no alternative but that of theonomy and autonomy” (Christian-Theistic Ethics, p. 134). Every ethical decision assumes some final authority or standard, and that will either be self-law (“autonomy”) or God’s law (“theonomy”). While unbelievers consider themselves the ultimate authority in determining moral right or wrong, believers acknowledge that God alone has that position and prerogative."
On today's podcast we'll scratch the surface on the question of Theonomy. Can Theonomy be applied in our culture? Did we once have a nation based on Theonomy? What would theonomy mean for unbelievers in America?

Extreme Pacifism | Ep 16
We started out this episode wondering if the American War for Independence, also known as the American Revolution could be called a Just War. On our way to that discussion we considered the concept of "Extreme Pacifism". This idea that Christians should never go to war seems hard to justify in the Bible, and we don't really try. What we do however is identify what God has said about our obligations when it comes to defending our homes and our property. We discuss when God demands that we act and how. Of course as Christians we serve the Prince of Peace and our desire is for peace so that also is discussed.

Sharing Jesus at the Gaza Solidarity Encampment | EP 17
In this episode, Pastor Jeff, Pastor Tim, and Average Joe head into the public square to meet people and share Jesus. This time we went to the Princeton Gaza Solidarity Encampment at Princeton University. The area is called Cannon Green and it is behind the famous Nassau Hall. As an aside, this Nassau Hall was built in 1756. George Whitefield preached there, and George Washington fought there and at one point the United States Congress held session there. And we got there just before they sent the Palestinians home.
Some of the interviews were audio only at the request of the respondent. We hope this episode blesses you and if you’d like to see more videos like this let us know.

Harrison Butker's Full Commencement Address | EP 19
The truth about Harrison Butker is something the left, the feminists, and the woke folk don't want to hear. He was accused of tearing down women in his commencement speech to graduates of Benedictine college in Atchison, KS. See below for a link to an article from that college.
The truth is he lifted up women. He encouraged them to receive the blessings God has given them in the vocation of motherhood. ;We know feminism hates motherhood. They take every chance they can to shout down anything that reminds them that women have a special gift from God. When Harrison elevated Motherhood over career he committed cultural blasphemy.
But Harrison also said that his role as a Father and a Husband is a higher calling than his role as a two time Superbowl winning football player. So how is that putting down women?
We play almost 100% of this video, then we discuss it. Additionally, we're going to discuss some of his contradictory statements about Catholicism, and why he is really promoting Sola Scriptura even while he promotes the Latin Mass.

Can Christians vote for Joe Biden or Donald Trump? | Ep. 8
We know there are Christians on both side of this issue, but who is right? Can Christians vote for Biden? Can they vote for Trump? What about RFK? Is this a tough decision or does the Bible spell this out clearly for all believers?
Pastor Jeff, Pastor Tim and Average Joe get into the details.
Please send us questions and don't forget to nominate your favorite RED CHURCH PASTOR. Send us a clip of your pastor being Nathan to David. We suggest 30 seconds to 2 minutes. NJ Pastors rescue school children from indecent exposure David Platt rhetoric remains elusive | Ep 6
Victory in Christ was declared in New Jersey by pastors who lead their congregations in an effort to stop the “Freedom to Read” act from being passed. These bills have both been pulled from the NJ Senate and Assembly floors. We’ll talk about how this happened and why NJ may be our next Red State. Pending a revival of course!
But alas, the grey church is still pushing strong. Radically Grey pastor David Platt doubles down on his love for the Hegelian dialectic. We’ll discuss his recent comments on “Freedom from the American Gospel”. Link of his full video below.

Definitions – of terms discussed on podcast.
Theonomy - The position which has come to be labeled "theonomy" today thus holds that the word of the Lord is the sole, supreme, and unchallengeable standard for the actions and attitudes of all men in all areas of life. Our obligation to keep God's commands cannot be judged by any extrascriptural standard, such as whether its specific requirements (when properly interpreted) are congenial to past traditions or modern feelings and practices. - Greg Bahnsen from What Is "Theonomy"?
General Equity - General Equity means that the judicial laws that applied under Old Testament Israel do not apply in the exact same way to states today, but that their moral equivalent applies for today.
Westminster Confession of Faith - https://www.ligonier.org/learn/articles/westminster-confession-faith
Second London Baptist Confession
http://baptiststudiesonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/the-second-london-confession.pdf
Moloch – Canaanite God known for child sacrifice. Big Red statue in the outro video.
Evangelisfish – A squishy Christian supporting no moral standards or fewer moral standards than God requires. See video link to David Platt.
CRT – Critical Race Theory – A modern racist version of Critical Theory which was Marxist-inspired movement in social and political philosophy originally associated with the work of the Frankfurt School.
DEI – Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion - Diversity, equity, and inclusion are organizational frameworks which seek seeks to support groups "who have historically been underrepresented or subject to discrimination" on the basis of identity or disability. Christians need to recognize this is a system of repentance with no forgiveness.
Intersectionality - Intersectionality is a sociological analytical framework for understanding how groups' and individuals' social and political identities result in unique combinations of discrimination and privilege. It promotes the idea of discriminating against people who have been perceived to have privilege.

Abortion battles in France, Alabama, and South Carolina | Ep 07
This is the conflict that we can't stop fighting. It seems like it never ends. Praise God for the victory in the Supreme Court a couple of years ago but the battle rages on. It turns out that that Supreme Court victory inspired France to legalize an already legal position on baby murder. Alabama is rightly recognizing Human embryos as being alive. South Carolina is fighting too. The fight to save babies from abortionists rages on. Join Pastor Jeff, Pastor Tim and Average Joe as we discuss the latest battles and why they still rage on.
Please nominate your pastor or a friend's pastor for our "Blood Red Church of the Week". We're going to have a different pastor win each week leading up to our Red Church Summit, Q1, 2025. At that event we'll announce the Blood Red Church of the Year for 2024.
Definitions
Red Church - “When I say, “red church,” I mean that we, the Church in the United States of America, were “bought with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:19), so the blood of Christ needs to color our view of everything, including politics.
Grey Church - “The Grey Church refers to those who have compromised between red and blue ethics in the culture war…who say that the church must not speak too dogmatically about politics, at least not over there to the right of them.”
Blue Church - The “blue church” refers to synagogues of Satan that espouse pagan ethics, yet still claim to be Christian…The religion of the blue church is social justice. By loving the oppressed the blue church feels noble but they don’t consult the biblical worldview to find out what constitutes oppression let alone love.

Is Alistair Begg right about LGBTQ+ weddings? | Ep. 2
Recently Alistair Begg, a well known conservative pastor and radio personality made controversial statements about whether or not a grandmother should attend her LGBTQ+ grandchild's wedding. Faithful believers can be confused by this issue for several reasons. You can listen to it here as Pastor Jeff, Pastor Tim and Average Joe exegete the culture. Did he compromise? Did he sin? How should we handle these situations?

How influential was John Stott's theology on Alistair Begg's recent gross sin? | EP 3
After a significant amount of public counseling to the contrary, historically faithful evangelical Pastor Alistair Begg calls his critics pharisees. This is a harsh rebuke and deserves exegeting. Some of his critics called him to repent and others just to recant. Some are saying its not sin but its just capitulation. Pastor Jeff and Pastor Tim help us average Joes understand how important it was when Alistair Begg cited John Stott as an influence in his theology. This episode will exegete the comments Pastor Begg going beyond just giving bad advice to a grandmother trying to love an unbelieving grandchild. We discuss Pastor Begg's comments about categories of sin, fundamentalism, and his understanding of covenant.
Were these errors influenced by following a man like John Stott who was an ecumenicalist (promoting unity among worldwide religions) and an annihilationist (rejects the doctrine of Hell)? Pastor Jeff will explain why he found the revelation of John Stott so revealing from a man like Pastor Begg who he has and continues to have great respect for.
We hope our criticisms are received with the love intended. Remember this podcast was recently renamed, "Tearing Down High Places, Rebuking Christian Compromise with Love". We are and will continue to pray for Pastor Begg to recant, repent, and grow in his understanding as appropriate so he can continue to serve the universal Church.
