University protests: Protesters defy Columbia deadline to leave campus | BBC News
Protests calling for universities to boycott companies and individuals with ties to Israel amid the ongoing war in Gaza have swept college campuses across the US.
The campus movement ignited when Columbia University in New York called the police two weeks ago to remove a small group of student protesters who had pitched tents on campus.
Columbia University's president announced on Monday that talks with student organisers had failed to reach an agreement to dismantle the encampment.
The escalating crisis at Columbia inspired similar encampments at private and public universities in at least 22 US states and Washington DC.

Georgia: Thousands protest against new bill | BBC News
For the last 10 days, thousands of Georgians - many in their late teens and early 20s - have been bringing the traffic of the capital, Tbilisi, to a standstill.
They demand that the government scrap plans to introduce a controversial bill - dubbed the "foreign agent" law - many say is inspired by authoritarian legislation neighbouring Russia uses to crush dissent.
Under the bill proposed by the ruling Georgian Dream party, NGOs and independent media that receive more than 20% of their funding from foreign donors would have to register as organisations "bearing the interests of a foreign power".
They would also be monitored by the Justice Ministry and could be forced to share sensitive information - or face hefty fines of up to 25,000 GEL ($9,400; £7,500).

Why U.S. Cities Are Going Broke
Spending cuts are abound in many U.S. cities as inflation lingers and pandemic-era stimulus dries up. At least 53 major cities have debt obligations that outstrip their assets, according to an estimate from Truth in Accounting. The group estimates higher debt burdens than many public officials report, due to allegedly underreported retiree benefits. The rising public debt may potentially leave future generations on the hook for financial decisions made by today's leaders.

Video shows US and Israeli hostages alive in Gaza | BBC News
Hamas has published a video showing the first proof of life of two more hostages being held in Gaza.
In undated footage filmed under duress, Omri Miran says he has been held for 202 days and Keith Siegel mentions this week's Passover holiday, indicating the clips were filmed recently.
Both were captured when Hamas launched its deadly attacks on 7 October.
Responding to the video, their families said they would keep fighting for the men's return.
They also urged the Israeli government to secure a new hostage release deal.
The new video comes as Hamas said it was studying Israel's latest proposal for a truce. Media reports said mediator Egypt had sent a delegation to Israel to give fresh impetus to stalled negotiations.

How some AI developers are combatting malicious bots |
Artificial intelligence poses a threat of disinformation worldwide, via flooding social media with bots and deepfakes.
For instance, a campaign using AI to impersonate Omar al-Bashir, the former leader of Sudan, received hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok, adding online confusion to a country torn apart by civil war.
While AI is supercharging disinformation's spread and speed, some experts argue that AI can also fight against cybercrime.
Amil Khan, CEO of Valent Projects, which assesses political instability in the information environment, joined AI Decoded on The Context to discuss AI's ability to verify authenticity online.
