Last summer I stopped milling lumber on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. This was partly because people stopped buying the lumber I was milling. I mostly mill Douglas fir lumber. Lumber was easy to sell when prices were high. After softwood lumber prices fell in 2023, it became difficult. Recently in the beginning of 2024, I am noticing a big change and people buying lumber. This is how to hand sharpen square ground chisel chainsaw chain. Square ground chain has advantages. A lot of people are discouraged to use it, because it can be more difficult to sharpen. Here is an easy way to measure the height of a tree. Using just a stick and optional tape measure, it is easy to find out how tall a tree is. There are tools foresters commonly use to measure the height of standing trees. Clinometers and lasers are often used. This method is a good easy technique for those who don't have those tools. When cutting down trees many people insist on making angled back cuts. I compare angled back cuts to standard horizontal back cuts. I attempt to explain why this can be a dangerous way to cut down trees. I have never seen professional loggers, timber fallers or arborists use angled back cuts. I demonstrate how I do a West Coast style Humboldt undercut felling notch. The Humboldt undercut is a type of face cut for falling trees. With this style of cutting trees down, it takes the notch out of the stump instead of the usable log. This can result in less wasted wood. Loggers on the West Coast commonly use the Humboldt. I am using a Stihl MS462 with a 32 inch bar and square filed full skip chain. The logs will be put on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. How to stay clean in the outdoors with an off grid shower.

Black bears populations in coastal Oregon and California have been exploding. A century ago they killed off the grizzlies, which kept black bear populations in check. A few years ago both states passed laws that made it more difficult to hunt them. Since then populations have been exploding and they are killing both Redwood and Douglas fir trees. They are sabotaging the efforts some of us are doing to restore the forests.

When I learned to run a chainsaw, I was not taught to wear a hardhat. This was the incident that taught me a lesson.

This is how loggers, wildland firefighters, the Forest Service and I have been putting our chains back on when we throw one. No my chain is not too loose. No it’s not going to harm the bar. No you can’t do it with short bars.
