how internet works?
For most of us, the internet is virtual, made of Instagram posts, emails and YouTube videos. And, access to the vital utility isn't guaranteed across the world. Glad You Asked host Cleo Abram wants to know: What is the internet actually made of? And, how does it work? Answering that question involves discovering how internet cables are laid in the sea, if 5G is really the future, and how balloons in the stratosphere are helping people connect.

why China's population is increasing day by day
For the first time in six decades, China's population is shrinking, and it's predicted it could create a demographic crisis. That's because China isn't just shrinking, it's also aging. And the majority of Chinese couples are not considering having more than one child. Because of this, China is predicted to lose nearly 50 percent of its population by 2100.
China's population decline can be traced back to the restrictive family-planning policies launched in the 1970s and an impressive economic boom fueled by China's huge labor force.
China's modernization brought rapid urbanization, rising income levels, and better education to large parts of China. Combined, these policies and growth have given China one of the lowest birth rates in the world.
Today, China is trying to reverse its population decline. Not just because an aging population is hard to sustain economically, but because China's impressive economic growth, until now, has relied on its people. As China's population challenges deepen over time, it might have to rethink how to grow its economy and care for its citizens.

why no any aquarium has no white shark
There are several aquariums around the world, including one in Georgia, that house whale sharks, the biggest fish in the sea. But not one has a great white shark on display.
Aquariums have made dozens of attempts since the 1970s to display a captive great white shark. Most of those attempts ended with dead sharks.
By the 2000s, the only group still trying was the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which spent a decade planning its white shark program. In 2004, it acquired a shark that became the first great white to survive in captivity for more than 16 days. In fact, it was on display for more than six months before it was released back into the ocean.
In the following years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted five more juvenile white sharks for temporary stays before ending the program in 2011. It was an expensive effort and had come under criticism due to injuries that some of the sharks developed in the tank.
Responding to those critics, Jon Hoech, the aquarium's director of husbandry operations, said: "We believe strongly that putting people face to face with live animals like this is very significant in inspiring ocean conservation and connecting people to the ocean environment. We feel like white sharks face a significant threats out in the wild and our ability to bring awareness to that is significant in terms of encouraging people to become ocean stewards."

The debate over the Anthropocene, explained
The word "Anthropocene" has gained cultural resonance in recent years, as it's become clearer that humans have made an indelible - and destructive impact on our planet. But it's also a term with a specific technical meaning: an epoch, or geologic unit of time, named for humans.
In 2009, geologists first started investigating whether the Anthropocene should be formally recognized as part of the way we record geologic time. This video explains what happened next: how a team of scientists looked for the evidence to make their case, and what it means to consider human time as part of the Earth's 4.6 billion-year history.
Note: The title of this video has been updated. Previous title: Should humans get their own geologic era?

what the red Red sea ship attacks are really about
After the Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7, 2023, the Houthis, a Yemeni rebel group, began attacking ships passing through the Red Sea. The Houthis pledged to attack any ship in these waters that does business with Israel, to protest Israel's war on Gaza and to show solidarity with Palestinians there. But as the attacks have continued, another motive for them has become apparent: strengthening the Houthis' control of Yemen.
After a nine-year civil war, the Houthis today control a sizable area in Yemen, with over 70 percent of the Yemeni population within the group's territory. The conflict has devastated the country, creating one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. More than 377,000 Yemenis have been killed - by airstrikes from a Saudi-led coalition; landmines and detonations planted by the Houthis; a lack of medical services; and scarcity of food and water due to a naval blockade. And both the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis have been accused of committing war crimes against Yemenis.
Today, the Houthis are attempting to establish themselves as Yemen's legitimate leaders in the eyes of Yemenis, though they've done little to improve the country's humanitarian crisis. The Red Sea attacks, which appear to have significant support among the Yemeni people, might be a means to achieve that goal.

why the ear of cheap streaming is over.
When streaming first came onto the scene, it seemingly came with a promise: the movies and TV that you love, without ads, for a much cheaper price than cable.
Less than 20 years down the line, it feels like that promise has been broken. Streaming is more expensive than ever, and prices just keep going up. Password sharing has been cracked down on, forcing more of us to pay to stream. And in the backdrop of all that, advertising is back with a vengeance, thanks to the rise of the cheaper ad-supported subscription tiers.
As a consumer, this feels infuriating. But we're not entirely at the whim of these companies. So why is all this happening? And what can we do to not go broke while still enjoying our favorite shows?
Note: The title on this video has been changed. Previous title: Streaming got expensive. Now what?

why it's hard for American to retire

Vox sat down with people in our New York City studio to talk to them about the state of their retirement savings.
By the standards of most financial experts, Americans are woefully behind on saving for retirement. The reason why is rooted in changes in policy to our retirement system with today's result being a flawed design in how people set aside money so they can one day stop working.
In this video, we interviewed four people about their level of retirement preparedness and two experts about the state of retirement readiness more broadly in the US. One culprit lies in changes to the country's pension system, which sets the US apart from countries like Australia and the UK; these places have systems which help more people save more money for retirement.

The lies that sell fast fashion
There are countless articles and videos breaking down the abysmal labor practices, horrifying environmental toll, and overall mountain of waste produced by the fast fashion industry. Activists and even just large swaths of the general public have been raising the alarm about this for well over a decade, but it hasn't stopped the rise of some of the worst offenders in the industry. For example, the ultra-fast fashion brand Shein has skyrocketed in value over the past five years largely due to their marketing success on Tik Tok. A lot of us know that fast fashion is bad, but the only way companies like Shein still thrive is if we convince ourselves otherwise and hit "add to cart" anyway. So why do we do it?
The answer is that e-commerce has completely warped our view of what items should cost and how long they should last (this includes and extends to our obsession with Amazon and two-day shipping). We're moving through trends at an unprecedented pace and it's doomed to get worse if we don't adjust our buying habits and learn to slow down. Consumers are being manipulated, but we can do better.

the trap fo debt
A 2023 Federal Reserve survey found that a third of Americans say that they don't have the cash to cover a $500 emergency expense. So what happens if they need it?
In this video, we compare six of the ways Americans say they get money when they don't have it: credit cards, bank loans, borrowing from a friend or family member, payday loans, selling something, and going into overdraft. How difficult is each one to access? How does paying off each kind of debt work? And how much does each one cost down the line?
None of these options are great for someone who can't pay an emergency expense. But some of them are a lot worse than others.
This video is presented by DCU. DCU doesn't have a say in our editorial decisions, but they make videos like this possible.
