Just before dusk and just after dawn, the birds descend on the leftovers. Hoping to find the few scraps left by the Javalina and the Deer....

This is Jewel. She's our special interest java. We've been watching Jewel for about 6 months now, since she was just a suckling newborn, not even eating solid food. About 2 weeks ago, we noticed that little Jewel was limping. Poor thing can walk, but her rear left leg is seriously damaged. We think she may have been hit by a car or attacked by a mountain lion. Fortunately, the rest of the herd is patient with her and her mama will often stand by and make sure Jewel gets her share of the food.

Our wonderful Java herd, as best we can tell, do a nightly racetrack pattern. They usually show up and eat at our place for about 30-45 minutes then they head out to their next spot. They will often come back in the wee hours, just before dawn to see if they missed anything

"How's my hair?" The java are very comfortable around our yard. We're enclosed on 3 side and a safe haven from predators. They have no compunction about getting right up into the camera lens.

As mentioned in our previous videos. After a night in the desert and surrounding neighborhoods, some of our Java herd will come back around to scavenge the last bits of food before heading back to their warren to sleep the day away.

The Java are absolute vacuum cleaners. They can pick up a single piece of corn, out of gravel.

The herd continues to grow. This is their nightly incursion. If you'd like to take screen shots and help us name the "piggies" we'd love it. The little one with the limp is already named "Jewel" and the big mama Java is named Aunt Lou...... The rest...we leave to you!

We love our Java mamas, but it's the babies that we go nutz for. They're so cute... but remember folks, these are wild animals. NEVER approach a wild animal..... period. We never interact with these amazing creatures, and we follow all laws! Enjoy

We adore the baby javalina. They're adorable. In this video, mama and baby find a treasure trove of treats on the back porch.

We do bait these in. We use birdfeed and corn. In our area, this is a legal process. We never harm and we never interact with these animal. We're just grateful that they come visit us every night. Between Covid and retiring, this is our nightly entertainment. Enjoy.

Odd herd, this herd, as best we've determined, has 2 bucks and 2-3 does. One of the bucks is very old, the other appears to be a year or 2 old.

Javalina have very poor eyesight, to compensate, they have developed a very keen sense of smell and hearing. Interestingly, they seem to be keenly attuned to danger sensed by any member of the herd.

Sometimes, we have a small white-tail deer herd that will come and eat our birdfeed. The javalina are quite territorial and rarely abide the intrusion

Javalina often squabble over food. As a herd, there is an Alpha Female who is usually the largest and most aggressive. She makes the rules and shepherds the flock
