Cornell University will be welcoming it's students to the Ithaca, NY campus. The city is preparing for the large migration of students back into the area. The day before the Cornell students come back the UAW Local 2300 employees are protesting still too. The NEW Cornell University students are expected to begin moving in August 19th and 20th, 2024 to attend orientation. The returning students will be moving in the following Thursday through Friday. Cornell University's Official Statement page shares an Update on Cornell-UAW negotiations as of August 16th, 2024. In this statement they explain that the UAW covers about 1,300 of their employees throughout the university campus. UAW employees can be found throughout Cornell University from their dining to the Statler Hotel. The UAW have already had a 94% vote to go on strike if necessary. Part of the negotiations involve the UAW looking for better wages. One of the discussion of changes to when an employee reaches full pay-rate for their positions. There is also discussion of when bonuses and increases to pay-rates would occur per seniority and time of service. Cornell states that if UAW goes on strike they have plans in place for essential services to continue and they will communicate any reduced hours of operation of services like dining. There are signs and banners all around Ithaca, NY welcoming the students back. They have a check-in center prepared at The Shops at Ithaca Mall. The protest is a very lively one. There is a lot of energy that can be heard from the protestors. Support from the local community and people driving by can be heard by the representation of horns honking every time a vehicle passes. With 1,300 employees off the clock for the campus it can be expected there will be a bit of disruption. Even if the campus uses contracted services there may not be enough to fill the gap.

***Audio only***In the Ithaca NY area with the uniquely high student population the businesses utilize app based services to the max to meet the high demand. Sure Doordash, Uber, and Instacart are names recognized all over, but in some areas they are more necessary than others. With this area being home to TC3, Ithaca College, and renown Cornell University there are a combination of needs to be met. Many students do not own their own transportation so they utilize services like Uber to get around. Similarly Doordash, Uber, and Instacart are utilized greatly by this population to get groceries, hot food, and other things delivered. Some people just simply do not want to do their own shopping or laundry. Stores also are looking to reduce the number of people physically in there stores at once and keep them from overwhelming their employees. These services bring in a lot of additional income to businesses and just keep on growing. Proof they themselves are growing drastically Doordash reported their Q1 2024 Revenue increased 23% Y/Y to $2.5 billion. Melanie Lovelace has once again agreed to be interviewed about regarding her experience with business in the Ithaca area. She currently works at The Laundry Room and prior to new ownership was the manager and employee of Nice and Clean Laundromat for 15 years at the same location. She shares that her business utilizes Uber and Doordash to reach customers that cannot or do not want to visit the laundromat in person. They place an order through the laundromat website to schedule a pickup through either delivery provider they prefer. After completing her customers laundry the delivery service is notified and they return to take the customer their laundry. With thousands of full-time students in the immediate area it is obvious this can be an effective way to service a percentage of the customers. Melanie also says that her business has defiantly increased using these services from when they didn’t use them. Kaleb, a cashier at a high volume grocery store in the area also agreed to be interviewed. He shares how his store uses a variety of solutions to reduce the need for customers to have to physically shop the store. He shares they offer pharmacy pickup, prepared foods( Hot and Cole) pickup, regular grocery pickup, and even delivery of groceries. His store has Instacart shoppers that will physically shop the orders for you that you can either pickup or have delivered to you. He believes without these implemented the store would be overwhelmed with too many people. He states “Some college students don’t want to like even go in the store and actually shop because they’ve got classwork and stuff”. Kaleb believes his work should purchase company owned vehicles to also open up the option for delivery by the store itself as an additional option. He believes this would also benefit the local community creating a few more job opportunities. You can get other 4 X 6 Frames or even get some at a Dollar Store *-Adobe Illustrator - or a way to make SVG files but we will be focusing on using Adobe and their AI offerings-this can be subscribed to -Adobe Photoshop - Can be useful depending on your art style or what you are working with. -GIMP -works too but steps will be different STEPS -First Setup and test your Cricut Joy and the Cricut Design Space software if you never have used it before. Make sure you have Adobe working too. -Now Chose a topic or concept. Since Easter is near we will be making an Easter image. Launch Illustrator, select new file, and pick A4. If there is enough interest I can show how use images you already have. Now Click create. -Click Properties on the top right side of Adobe illustrator. You should now see "Text to Vector Graphic". This is where the AI will make an image for you. About half way down from that you will see a text box titled "Prompt". Here is where we will write "Easter Bunny with a Basket Silhouette" -Now click Generate. It will take a moment to generate but Adobe will provide you 3 Variations you can use. Pick the one you like. ***Remember if we use a sharpie in the Cricut Joy we will be only drawing the outer strokes of the image. If we use the supplied cutting blade we can cut these shapes out of any vinyl. So it depends where you want to go from here.*** -Now we will add "Happy Easter" to the file. Click on the "T" on the left of Illustrator and drag a text box on the image. Erase the generic text and type what you want. I'm putting in "Happy Easter" Chose your Font and size. -Click on the Cursor image in the Top Left of Illustrator and click the textbox you just made. Now select Effect on the top toolbar and choose warp and Arc. Now you can make the words bend to the shape of the image. -Now go up to File then Export then Export As. Now name the file and in the drop box choose SVG for the format. We will save to downloads for this example. -We will now launch Cricut Design Space -Choose + New Project -Now select on the left "Upload" -Choose file and select continue even if some issue comes up. Many times this does not matter with what we are making. -Click upload and select the uploaded image then click add to canvas -Scale the Image down to less then 4 x 6 and move it to the board within the 4 x 6 markings -On the right side you can expand the group and remove pieces that you do not want drawn or cut out -Click the Top Group title and it should select all pieces. -Choose Exclude -Click Make and save project -Choose on Mat and Mat size 4.5 x 6.5 and remember this selection. Now you can adjust the image more. -Click Continue -Now pick the cardstock that is closest to what you purchased -Put the paper on the standard grip aligning the top left corner. Load the sharpie with the attached adapter into the Cricut Joy and Load the card into the machine. It will now make sure everything is aligned. -Now Click Go (It is okay it says basic cut. It doesn't know there is a marker in there.) -Now if it came out the way you like frame it or even give it out as is. You can always make adjustments or go back and have it cut it out of Vinyl instead and create something else.
