Feds: Homeownership program director for nonprofit stole 30 properties…
The director of homeownership programs for a Detroit nonprofit was arrested Wednesday, accused of conspiring with others to steal more than 30 properties across Wayne County, most of them in Detroit, in a scheme targeting low-income people facing potential tax foreclosure, federal prosecutors announced.
Zina Thomas, 60, of Detroit, was charged in a criminal complaint unsealed Wednesday in U.S. District Court. According to the complaint, Thomas lives in one of the properties involved in the scheme.
A news release from U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison's Office said leaders of the nonprofit United Community Housing Coalition, which provides housing assistance to Detroit's low-income residents, cooperated with the investigation.
"While it's deeply troubling that these individuals are alleged to have misused our company emails and computers, the charges confirm that the integrity of UCHC's programs are not being called into question," the nonprofit's executive director, Ted Phillips, said in a statement emailed to the Free Press.

Is TikTok getting shut down? Congress flooded with angry calls …
Will TikTok be banned?
A key House committee voted unanimously Thursday to advance bipartisan legislation that would force China’s ByteDance to sell off TikTok or face a ban in the United States.
Before the 50-0 vote in the House Energy and Commerce Committee, lawmakers received a classified briefing on national security concerns raised by TikTok's Chinese ownership.
The legislation is widely seen as the most potent threat yet to the wildly popular app that is used by 170 million Americans.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Thursday that he supported the bill. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., said he would send the bill to the House floor. If the full House approves the legislation, it will go to the Senate.
Why is the government trying to ban TikTok?
The White House also has thrown its support behind the bill, which was introduced by a bipartisan group of lawmakers on Tuesday. That further raises the political heat on TikTok.
"This bill is important. We welcome this step," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

Trump’s controversial remarks raise questions about Black voter push
Former President Trump’s controversial remarks that Black voters will back him because of his legal woes are raising new questions about whether the GOP’s likely standard-bearer will help or hurt his party with the demographic.
Trump is making a concerted effort to win over Black men in what is expected to be a razor-tight contest with President Biden. His appearance at the Sneaker Con event in Philadelphia and his flirtation with Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) as a vice presidential candidate are both examples of his campaign’s strategy.
Diante Johnson, president of the Black Conservative Federation (BCF), said Trump’s election and reelection campaign indicates a change happening within the GOP.
“The Democratic Party has never had to fight for the Black vote. They’ve never had to worry about Republicans going back to the Black vote. Now it’s happening and they don’t know what to do,” Johnson said. “The Republican Party is changing. This is not the same Republican Party as our grandparents. This is a Republican Party that is inclusive. This is a Republican Party that is a big tent.”
Johnson pointed to successes Black Americans saw under Trump’s administration, including 10 years of funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and an increase in homeownership from 41 percent to 46 percent.

Attorney general orders Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard to release spending records..
DOLTON, Ill. — Last November, WGN Investigates first reported how a south suburban politician and her allies spent taxpayer money on first class airline tickets, luxury hotels and high-end restaurants.
Tiffany Henyard is the mayor of Dolton and supervisor of Thornton Township. The elected positions pay her more than $280,000 annually, according to interviews and records.
After the story aired, WGN Investigates sent a public records request to Dolton asking for, among other things, copies of additional credit card statements to check if the spending spree continued.
The village did not turn over the records, as required under state law. The records request, sent via email on Nov. 29, also asked for copies of documents showing any payments to Henyard.
WGN Investigates filed an appeal with the Illinois Attorney General.
That agency turned over the records. The statements showed Henyard and other officials spent nearly $67,000 in township funds on trips to Portland, Austin, Atlanta and New York City in recent months.

Our Ancestors looking back to Slaves and the Plantations.
Many of us born before 1960 have experienced a lot in life. A look back to our ancestors is IMPORTANT!
For most people descended from enslaved Black Americans, the process of finding their roots goes something like this; they crack open Census records to track back from a grandfather or grandmother to a great-grandmother, then a great-great-grandmother and maybe one or two more greats before they get back to the family member who was enslaved.
These are our ancestors’: Descendants of enslaved people are shifting plantation tourism
At three plantations in Charleston, S.C., Black descendants are connecting with their family’s history and helping reshape the narrative

1960 Black were called Migrants, Harvest Of Shame Documentary
Harvest of Shame was a 1960 television documentary presented by broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow on CBS that showed the plight of American migrant agricultural workers. It was Murrow's final documentary for the network; he left CBS at the end of January 1961, at John F. Kennedy's request, to become head of the United States Information Agency. An investigative report intended "to shock Americans into action," it was "the first time millions of Americans were given a close look at what it means to live in poverty" by their televisions.
The program was an installment of the television documentary series CBS Reports, widely seen as the successor to Murrow's highly regarded 1951–1958 CBS program See It Now. Murrow's close associate, Fred W. Friendly, who coproduced See It Now, was the executive producer of CBS Reports. Their colleague, Edward P. Morgan, had taken up the issue of migrant labor in his CBS Radio Network commentaries. Morgan's assistant had visited Senator Harry F. Byrd's Northern Virginia farm during the apple harvest and was outraged by the conditions of the migrant laborers working there. According to Murrow biographer Joseph Persico, Friendly decided that the issue was a natural for Murrow, long seen as a champion of the oppressed.
While Murrow and Friendly are often seen as the forces behind the show, broadcast historians such as the late Edward Bliss, Jr. have also given credit to "Harvest of Shame" producer/reporter David Lowe. Lowe did much of the legwork, including a number of the interviews featured in the installment.
The program originally aired just after Thanksgiving Day in November 1960. The December 5, 1960 edition of Time quoted producer Lowe as saying,

DOLTON MAYOR TIFFANY HENYARD VETOES INVESTIGATION INTO HERSELF AMID CORRUPTION ACCUSATIONS
DOLTON, Ill. (WLS) — A tense meeting got underway in Dolton on Monday night as residents voiced their frustrations with the mayor and recent allegations against her.
“We don’t need anything else, saying what you’re claiming to do for the village. We need accountability. We need information on the finances,” one speaker said.
Mayor Tiffany Henyard is accused of using village money for personal reasons as Dolton’s unpaid bills have piled up. Henyard has denied the allegations.
During the meeting, Henyard vetoed a resolution passed by the village board to investigate her spending.
But on Monday night, it was residents’ turn to call out the mayor.
“I’m asking that you either step down or the trustees that voted you in to vote you out,” another speaker said.
After those public comments, Henyard responded, calling the accusations “false.”
“It’s facts over fiction for me. I will state facts. I will show receipts, and I will make sure our community is back together as one,” Henyard said. “It amazes me how people can get together and come to a board meeting and just have hate in their heart and not love on each other.”
Henyard said she wants future board meetings to focus on other issues.

Hip Hop Eddie Cheba dies at age 67! His last performance video from 2023
According to close friend Van Silk, he passed away from a cardiac arrest at 7:16 a.m. ET on Tuesday (February 13).
Hip-Hop pioneer Eddie Cheba has died AllHipHop can confirm. According to close friend Van Silk, he passed away from a cardiac arrest at 7:16 a.m. ET on Tuesday (February 13). Cheeba’s sister, Sarah Shawn, confirmed the news on social media. Cheeba had been sick for at least six months and suffered not one but three strokes. The trailblazing DJ was considered one of the biggest club DJs in New York City throughout the 1970s and could easily pack the house on any given day.
“I met Eddie back in 1975, the same time I met DJ Hollywood and Reggie Wells,” Van Silk tells AllHipHop. “Reggie Wells and Eddie Cheba grew up in Douglas Houses in Manhattan. My experience with Eddie Cheba is very sentimental. He played for many of my parties and we did Broadway International together. Eddie definitely cannot be left out of the culture of Hip-Hop. Trust me. Sad to say Eddie Cheba’s last performance and interview was last August 11 at the Rapamania 50 event. Eddie was booked to perform, but I told him to get on the mic. We have along personal history and been in touch with him over the last six years. He will definitely be missed.”

14-year-old scientist Heman Bekele on his quest to fight skin cancer with soap
According to PBS
Heman Bekele spent the last year developing a bar of soap that could treat skin cancer. It was the winning entry at the annual 3M Young Scientist Challenge, considered one of the top science and engineering competitions for fifth through eighth graders. For our Weekend Spotlight, John Yang speaks with Bekele about his work.
Heman Bekele:
Sure. So SCTS, which stands for Skin Cancer Treating Soap, is basically this compound based bar of soap that's charged with different cancer fighting chemicals to help treat different forms of skin cancer. Pretty much the way that it works is it uses this drug called imidazoquinolines, and it wraps it around this lipid based nanoparticle.
And the concept here is that even though the soaps and suds will be washed away by the soap, there will still be all of the medicinal components stuck there by the lipid based nanoparticle. And this is kind of a more new and novel approach to fighting against skin cancer.
