More than half of U.S. newborns got RSV protection
More than half of U.S. newborns now appear to be protected by new RSV vaccines, according to updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.
Why it matters: The virus is considered the second leading cause of death worldwide during the first year of a child's life. The data suggests demand was strong despite broader vaccine skepticism and the potential for confusion over more childhood immunization options.
What they found: CDC figures through January show 40.5% of females with an infant 8 months or younger reported the child received the antibody Beyfortus, which was developed by Sanofi and AstraZeneca and approved by the FDA last July.
Between the lines: The number of RSV cases started increasing as early as July, but hospitalizations over the winter have been lower than the 2022-2023 respiratory virus season, when an uptick of cases strained some children's hospitals.

New heart health risk factors for women over age 50!
February is American Heart Month — a good time to know what’s at stake in terms of your cardiovascular health.
For women over age 50, a few factors regarding heart health deserve a little more attention, according to experts.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women, according to Northwell Health cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer medical expert Dr. Stacey Rosen, who is based in New York.
Nearly 45% of women over 20 years old are actually living with some form of CVD, Rosen told Fox News Digital.
Gender-specific risk factors include menstrual history and adverse pregnancy outcomes, she said.
“Other sex-specific risk factors include anxiety and depression, increased risk due to certain treatments for breast cancer, and rheumatologic conditions,” she said.
Dr. John Whyte, chief medical officer of WebMD and based in Washington, D.C., also told Fox News Digital about some primary risk factors for women age 50 and older — starting with menopause.
“The decrease in estrogen levels after menopause is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons [we see an] increase in heart attacks around this age.”
High blood pressure and high cholesterol also often increase with age and can become “more challenging to control,

Women may realize health benefits of regular exercise more than men
For all the health benefits of exercise for both groups, however, only 33% of women and 43% of men in the study met the standard for weekly aerobic exercise, while 20% of women and 28% of men completed a weekly strength training session.
“Even a limited amount of regular exercise can provide a major benefit, and it turns out this is especially true for women,” said Cheng. “Taking some regular time out for exercise, even if it’s just 20-30 minutes of vigorous exercise a few times each week, can offer a lot more gain than they may realize.”
“This study emphasizes that there is no singular approach for exercise,” said Eric J. Shiroma, Sc.D., a program director in the Clinical Applications and Prevention branch at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). “A person’s physical activity needs and goals may change based on their age, health status, and schedule – but the value of any type of exercise is irrefutable.”
The authors said multiple factors, including variations in anatomy and physiology, may account for the differences in outcomes between the sexes. For example, men often have increased lung capacity, larger hearts, more lean-body mass, and a greater proportion of fast-twitch muscle fibers compared to women. As a result, women may use added respiratory, metabolic, and strength demands to conduct the same movement and in turn reap greater health rewards.
