CNW-Chicago Passenger Terminal (North Western Station) 1984.
After 39 years, I finally edited this video. I had filmed a total of 6hrs in May and July of 1984.
At that time, I used a Heavy 3-piece VHS unit (Minolta) Large Hand-Held Cam with a VCR on my person with a shoulder strap. The technology was new for VHS, As you will see, You get light Burn-in and very low light sensitivity. In the video, Im trying to tell a story about the former Terminal and the persons that worked there!. Let me say, The C&NW employees helped me with open arms, They saw what I was trying to do, That was Document that Building before she was destroyed. Corporate (CNW) was very dismissive about my documenting, They wanted no part in it. I was NOT going to let any one stop me. I miss the people and I sure miss the former Terminal!.. I love beaux arts architecture, She was a beauty. It's too bad that the railroad didn't put money into that building, but at that time, Passenger service was declining, Im sure there where other reasons, CNW sold the former building to air-rights in 1979.
The men in the video, Gus Valavanis was a 25 year electrician, Moore "Mo", a Machinist had 36 years of service.
Look, I wish I knew the Do's and Don'ts on Videography. I did a lot of fast pan and zoom, I was VERY bad. Thank goodness I was ahead my time. In other words, I would rather have Video and or Audio to make this former station come alive. Many persons where there taking photos, But I wanted video!.. I love to listen to the sounds that former station had, Motors, Elevators, Etc. That place was noisy.
I'll leave it right here, I said enough. In my Opinion, I loved her glory, She was Grand, Old, Dirty, and a Diamond In The Ruff, But I sure miss her.
P.S., The video tapes are starting to degrade, I had no chose but to convert videos to B&W, 4X3 to 16X9 Aspect Ratio, converted Analog (VHS) to Digital. Enjoy!. (jls2).
