How I Write - Michael Mandaville - Versioning
One of the most liberating techniques I have used is called ‘versioning’. This rather free wheeling tendency to create a new version which provides me with the safety and security of a backup (the last version) while giving me the mindset to go creatively wherever I want with the material. In that way, I can invoke a greater daring and boldness and creative spontaneity. I have rarely gone backwards to the material. So this “Versioning” Technique is a key element toward my creative momentum.

How I write - Michael Mandaville - Blank page - Philosophy
In the blank page syndrome, we many times come up against a mental lock up simply because we are thinking in the traditional modes of – subject Dash action Dash object. What we have to do it sometimes work to break those traditional ingrained patterns of creative thinking. After all if they are traditional and ingrained, then they may not be creative any longer!
In this particular method, the central technique is about thinking less from our brain cave – in our heads – and more in our heart. And no we don't want to get weepy sentimental here although if that's the direction you want to go you can. What I am talking about are the principles, beliefs, values, religious principles and more that you value. Then you start talking about them and what your character would think about them. You will have generally strong feelings and ideas about these beliefs. So if your character wishes to challenge them or agree with them, then you are writing from a point of authenticity and enthusiasm.
