New: Mars In 4K
A world first. New footage from Mars rendered in stunning 4K resolution. We also talk about the cameras on board the Martian rovers and how we made the video.
The cameras on board the rovers were the height of technology when the respective missions launched.
A question often asked is: 'Why don't we actually have live video from Mars?'
Although the cameras are high quality, the rate at which the rovers can send data back to earth is the biggest challenge. Curiosity can only send data directly back to earth at 32 kilo-bits per second.
Instead, when the rover can connect to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we get more favourable speeds of 2 Megabytes per second.
Instead, when the rover can connect to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we get more favourable speeds of 2 Megabytes per second.
However, this link is only available for about 8 minutes each Sol, or Martian day.
As you would expect, sending HD video at these speeds would take a long long time. As nothing really moves on Mars, it makes more sense to take and send back images.

NASA Mars Helicopter Ingenuity Animations
Animations for media and public use. NASA's Mars Helicopter Ingenuity will be the first aircraft to fly in a controlled way on another planet. As its own separate mission, the helicopter will hitch a ride to Mars attached to the belly of NASA's Perseverance rover (part of the Mars 2020 mission). This animation reel simulates how Ingenuity will operate on the surface of Mars.
The Ingenuity helicopter is considered a high-risk, high-reward technology demonstration. If the small craft encounters difficulties, the science-gathering of the Mars 2020 mission won't be impacted. If the helicopter does take flight as designed, future Mars missions could enlist second-generation helicopters to add an aerial dimension to their explorations.
The Perseverance rover, with the Ingenuity helicopter aboard, will launch in July or August 2020 and land on Mars on Feb. 18, 2021.

NASA Warns Massive Solar Storm Will Hit Earth in 2023 | Solar Flares | Sun Breaks Off

Many of you may remember the eschatological prophecies arising in 2012 about a hypothetical planet called Niburu, also confused with "Planet-X", which was supposed to wipe out all life on Earth. The rumor was predicated on the belief that the Mayan-calendar, which dates back to at least the 5th century BCE, was scheduled to cease its existence on 21 December 2012. While the world is still spinning, as evident by the rotation of this globe, we did narrowly escape a catastrophic event. An event that hadn't occurred in December but way back in July. The event was potentially so powerful that it could have pressed the reset button on human civilization, throwing it decades back into the past.

Earth Has Received a Message Laser-Beamed From 10 Million Miles Away
Breaking the Distance Barrier:
NASA has just taken a giant leap in expanding the World Wide Web beyond our planet! In a groundbreaking demonstration, the space agency successfully beamed messages via laser across an astonishing distance of almost 16 million kilometers, equivalent to 10 million miles. To put it in perspective, that's a remarkable 40 times farther than the Moon is from Earth.
Optical Communication Triumph:
For the first time ever, optical communications have been transmitted across such an immense distance. Traditionally, radio waves have been the go-to method for communicating with distant spacecraft. However, NASA's recent test, part of the Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment, utilized higher frequencies of light, particularly near-infrared, offering a substantial increase in bandwidth. This breakthrough promises a significant boost in data speed.
Adapting Earthly Tech for Deep Space: While we all rely on similar technology embedded in optical fibers for high-speed ground-based communications, NASA has ingeniously adapted and optimized this tech for deep space exploration. This innovation represents a significant advancement in the methods of retrieving information from distant spacecraft and promises a future of seamless interplanetary communication.
Towards Galactic Connectivity:
The successful establishment of this communication link, referred to as 'first light, is a pivotal moment in NASA's DSOC experiment. The test not only showcases the potential of optical communication but also opens doors to unprecedented opportunities in space communication technology.
The Need for Speed: Higher-frequency light, like near-infrared, proves crucial for future missions involving high-definition video messages to and from Mars. If we aim to eliminate significant delays in interplanetary communication, this cutting-edge technology is undeniably the key.
DSOC Milestones Unveiled: Trudy Kortes, Director of Technology Demonstrations at NASA Headquarters, highlights the importance of achieving 'first light. This milestone is just one of many critical steps in the DSOC experiment, paving the way for higher-data-rate communications. The goal is to enable the transmission of scientific information, high-definition imagery, and streaming video-a vital support for humanity's next giant leap into the cosmos.

NASA's James Webb telescope Identifies Methane In an Exoplanet's Atmosphere
#space
#jwst
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope observed the exoplanet WASP-80 b as it passed in front of and behind its host star, revealing spectra indicative of an atmosphere containing methane gas and water vapor. While water vapor has been detected in over a dozen planets to date, until recently methane - a molecule found in abundance in the atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune within our solar system has remained elusive in the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets when studied with space-based spectroscopy. Taylor Bell from the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute (BAERI), working at NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley, and Luis Welbanks from Arizona State University tell us more about the significance of discovering methane in exoplanet atmospheres and discuss how Webb observations facilitated the identification of this long-sought-after molecule. These findings were recently published in the scientific -
journal Nature.

Elon Musk JUST REVEALED SpaceX's New Space Station!
Elon Musk JUST REVEALED SpaceX's New Space Station!
Elon Musk, the visionary entrepreneur behind SpaceX,
has recently unveiled the company's highly anticipated
new space station. This revelation marks a significant
milestone in the field of space exploration and sets the
stage for a new era of interplanetary travel. While
specific details about the station remain limited, early
reports suggest that it will incorporate groundbreaking
technologies and features aimed at enhancing our
ability to live and conduct research in space. From
advanced life support systems to state-of-the-art
research facilities, the space station promises to
revolutionize our understanding of space habitation.
Moreover, Musk's ambitious vision of space tourism

Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster Video [With Real Video] | Mayday: Air Disaster (4K)
The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster was a fatal accident in the United States' space program that occurred on January 28, 1986, when the Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-099) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members aboard. The mission carried the designation STS-51-L and was the tenth flight for the Challenger orbiter.
The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 11:39 a.m. EST (16:39 UTC). The disaster began after a joint in the Space Shuttle's right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The failure was caused by the failure of O-ring seals used in the joint, in part because of the unusually cold temperatures at the time of launch. The seals' failure caused a breach in the SRB joint, which allowed pressurized burning gas from within the solid rocket motor to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent SRB's aft field joint attachment hardware and external fuel tank. This led to the separation of the right-hand SRB's aft field joint attachment and the structural failure of the external tank. Following the explosion, the orbiter was broken up by aerodynamic forces.
The crew compartment and many other vehicle fragments were recovered from the ocean floor after a three-month search and recovery operation. The exact timing of the death of the crew is unknown; several crew members are known to have survived the initial breakup of the spacecraft. By design, the orbiter has no escape system, and the impact of the crew compartment at terminal velocity with the ocean surface was too violent to be survivable.
The disaster resulted in a 32-month hiatus in the Space Shuttle program and the formation of the Rogers Commission, a special commission appointed by United States President Ronald Reagan to investigate the accident. The Rogers Commission found that issues with NASA's organizational culture and decision-making processes had been key contributing factors to the accident. Test data from as early as 1977 had revealed a potentially catastrophic flaw in the SRBss O-rings, but this was not addressed or corrected by NASA or Morton Thiokol. NASA managers also disregarded warnings from engineers about the dangers of launching in cold temperatures and did not report these technical concerns to their superiors.

Many people know something about NASA's work. But most probably have no idea about how many different things the agency does. Astronauts in orbit conduct scientific research. Satellites help scientists learn more about Earth. Space probes study the solar system, and beyond. New developments improve air travel and other aspects of flight. NASA is also beginning a new program to send humans to explore beyond the moon to Mars. In addition to those major missions, NASA does many other things. The agency shares what it learns, so that its information can make life better for people all over the world. For example, companies can use NASA discoveries to create new "spin-off" products.
NASA's Education Office helps teachers to prepare the students who will be the engineers, scientists, astronauts and other NASA workers of the future. They will be the adventurers who will continue the exploration of the solar system and universe in the years to come. NASA has a tradition of investing in programs and activities that inspire and engage students, educators, families and communities in the excitement and discovery of exploration. NASA offers training to help teachers learn new ways to teach science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The agency also involves students in NASA missions to help them get excited about learning.

What Exactly Went Wrong With Boeing's Starliner Spacecraft?
It's nearly been a decade since Boeing was awarded a hefty $4.2 billion contract from NASA to develop a spacecraft capable of transporting humans to the International Space Station. Unfortunately, in that time period, not only has the vehicle still yet to carry humans once, but it has consistently run into different complications. This begs the question of how a leading aerospace company had so much trouble with this contract.
At the same time as Boeing has continued to try and develop the vehicle, SpaceX has been sending humans to space for years now. When NASA originally picked these companies, they certainly didn't expect Boeing to end up being the riskier and delayed option. In reality, a combination of test anomalies and frequent mistakes has delayed Starliner's first crewed launch by years.
These issues have even brought up the possibility of abandoning the Starliner program as it only gets more and more expensive for Boeing to run. A future the company is trying very hard to avoid after investing so much time and money over the last 10 years. Here I will go more in-depth into some of the company's main issues, problems with Starliner, what the future holds, and more.

In two years, NASA plans to land humans on the Moon! NASA's Artemis Program, which will establish a permanent human presence on the Moon, is currently underway. It has 4 main components: The space launch system, or SLS, which will launch astronauts into orbit. The Orion spacecraft, which will transport them to and from the Moon. The human landing system, which will transport them to and from the lunar surface. And Gateway, a space station that will support ground operations.
Already, Artemis 1, which launched in November 2022, has successfully demonstrated the SLS and Orion, by sending an un-crewed Orion around the Moon and back to Earth. The next mission, in 2024, will launch astronauts around the Moon and finally, in 2025, they will land on the surface. After this, many more missions will establish a permanent human lunar presence, serving as a stepping stone to Mars and other destinations even further into the solar system!
