FDR animation Amercian Airlines flight 77
Animation of American Airlines flight 77 (Dulles - Pentagon) with subtitles of pilot‐controller communication. Based on the Flight Data Recorder (FDR).
Produced in 2004 by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (also known as the 9-11 Commission). Commission staff attended a playback in the NTSB's Vehicle Recorders Division laboratory on April 22, 2004. That presentation was not very convincing. I nevertheless believe that the document should not be deleted from the public memory.
Disclaimer : This video is for general education and entertainment purposes only. The animation contains various glitches and inaccuracies. Viewers should not draw conclusions regarding the outcome of the event. Recipients, who requested this animation via FOIA request, have been advised of its nature as a "working copy", not for official purposes.
On a personal note : I am convinced that the NTSB experts are highly skilled aviation professionals who exactly knew what they were doing. Also, a FDR does not record any audio. I decided not to dub the video with ATC audio, even if it made the watching experience more interesting, since that would mean tampering with evidence.

The September 11 Attacks - Chet Wilson's footage with Melinda Murphy (editor's cut)
This video contains the files « WPIX Dub4 01.avi » to « WPIX Dub4 17.avi » which have been released to the public by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). I added additional footage which was released through NIST FOIA #09-42 request, and which is not available on NIST's cloud server.
Aerial footage from news helicopter Air 11, produced by a WPIX-TV (WB11) news crew, covering a total of almost 6 ½ hours. Air 11 was the only news helicopter that was allowed to stay airborne into the afternoon. The majority of the video is raw footage, other clips are from the live coverage and may include short clips shot by other videographers. Please be advised that both the video and the audio streams are temporarily broken, but continue, most frequently during the last hour. This was part of the problems on that day, and is reflected in the video. Also, to protect privacy, I redacted three telephone numbers that were audible.

I refrain from digital image manipulation. In my opinion, any so-called 'enhancement', as observed in similar video creations elsewhere, is tampering with evidence. I consider this video document as material evidence in the disaster investigation. My objective is to use as much raw footage as ever available for a highly authentic document, and to avoid edited material if possible. I also conserved artifacts 'as is', and interruptions of the video/audio stream, and my FOIA patches may have encountered earlier compression losses.
However, I adapted all footage to NTSC standard (SD), doubled the frame rate to 59.94 fps (60000/1001), and tried to restore the audio, if possible, when necessary. Though working with mostly uncompressed footage, this online version is presented in the HEVC/H.265 video compression format.
There are more aerial pictures by Chet Wilson that were broadcast during WPIX' live coverage. I excluded those from the video, because they were tiny inset windows, sharing the TV screen with pictures in two or even three other windows.

However, I adapted all footage to NTSC standard (SD), doubled the frame rate to 59.94 fps (60000/1001), and restored most of the audio. It is unclear whether the static cam temporarily did not record the surrounding sound, or whether that portion of the footage had been redacted, which I deem to be possible. Though working with mostly uncompressed footage, this online version is presented in the HEVC/H.265 video compression format.
Times in this video have been established based on the position of the sun and shadows on the ground, which comes close to the assessment made by NIST in their document NCSTAR 1-9. According to NIST, Terence Nelson's camera did not provide us with a time stamp. Also, as long as the journalists were on Barclay Street, the Con Edison substation under 7 WTC was still functional as it is clearly audible. According to the FEMA 403 study of 2002, this substation was shut down at 04h33 p.m. Another source to establish time was of course WCBS-TV itself, which matches the time stamp of CNN footage, as I have verified.

We are seeing a collection of about 100 short and very short clips. There is reason to believe that the material was intensively redacted by NIST, including portions of the audio. I maintain the character of these individual clips, and connected only those which yield in continuous footage until the collapse of Building 7, and I present short clips of the aftermath in groups.

The September 11 Attacks - Luigi Cazzaniga's footage (editor's cut)
This video contains the files « Luigi Cazzaniga 01.avi » to « Luigi Cazzaniga 80.avi » which have been released to the public by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Videographer: Luigi Cazzaniga
Locations: Across Lower Manhattan, NY
Time: 09h10:41 a.m. - ~10h32 a.m. EDT, September 11, 2001.
Mr. Cazzaniga walks with his camera and with us from street to street across Lower Manhattan, and he provides us with numerous details, and with precious impressions of how New Yorkers had experienced that morning. Very surprisingly, he apparently, or according to NIST, missed the collapse of the North Tower, though people around him were in anticipation minutes earlier that the collapse might happen.

The start time of the footage @ 09h10:41 a.m. EDT is verified thanks to the live broadcasting of WCBS-TV (CBS2). Ten seconds before the footage ends (22:51), the actual time was ~10h32:22 a.m. EDT, verified thanks to Richard Peskin's footage in which we can briefly observe Mr. Cazzaniga filming. The very last shot followed without significant delay, as the positions of people and vehicles on Greenwich Street indicate.

Mr. Peskin had a very privileged vantage point. Surprisingly, there is almost no consecutive footage available, only the present clips. This is intriguing. Fact is that during all three collapses, the camera started rolling just a couple of seconds too late. Another fact is, that after 19 min 17 sec accumulated footage runtime (19:50 in this video) Mr. Peskin is making a statement : "This is the second tape." We don't know which video system exactly he was using in 2001, neither which tapes. But most VHS tapes on the market offered a longer or much longer run-time. There are some clues, however without hard evidence, that Mr. Peskin is actually an experienced news correspondent, professionally equipped, and that his footage here is a by-product of his journalistic work.
The start time @ 08:55:59 a.m. EDT has been established through synchronization with Cindy Weil's footage, which was in part possible until 10:34:15 a.m. EDT. Later time stamps are based on information provided by NIST.

The time when the camera started rolling @ ~08h46:50 a.m. has been established with the help of footage from the film '11|09' by Jules & Gédéon Naudet, and also with raw footage shot by a WNYW (FOX5) news crew (team Dick Olivier) from City Hall Park.
Recently, I've learned that Scott Myers became the victim of a homicide, on November 26, 2021 in his home in Catskill, NY. Being shocked by this news, I would like to express my condolences to all those who loved him.
I also conserved artifacts 'as is', and the FOIA patches which I may use may have encountered earlier compression losses.
However, I adapted all footage to NTSC standard (SD), doubled the frame rate to 59.94 fps (60000/1001), and tried to restore the audio, if possible, when necessary. Though working with mostly uncompressed footage, this online version is presented in the HEVC/H.265 video compression format.
I also have redacted the footage released through NIST FOIA #09-42 request. I decided to protect the privacy of those people, often children, who're unrelated to the event. Therefore, I only added 35 frames (in the form of still images) to this present video, but without concealing this material. It is a little unclear to me why NIST has responded to the FOIA request with private footage that is not directly related to the attacks.
This video has been created for exclusively educational, non-profit purposes.

The September 11 Attacks - Cindy Weil's footage (editor's cut)
This video contains the files « Cindy Weil 01.avi » to « Cindy Weil 23.avi » which have been released to the public by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). I added additional footage which was released through FOIA requests (DOC-NIST-2015-001861 & DOC-NIST-2020-000684), and which is not available on NIST's cloud server.
Videographer : Cindy Weil
Location : Hudson Street & Duane Street, Manhattan, New York, NY
Time : approx 08h51 - 10h31:30 a.m. EDT, September 11, 2001
This is a special video containing 58 consecutive minutes of non-stop footage, including the collapse of both towers, providing viewers with an actual feeling of time as it happened. It is also a very emotional video. Viewers witness how Cindy, a young Mom with her Baby alone at home, is terrified and scared by what she's seen and heard.

»» 01:29:13 »» North Tower (1 WTC) begins to collapse @ 10h28:22 a.m. EDT;
To establish actual times in EDT, I synchronized the audio track of the footage (shots # 3 & # 5) with the audio track of CNN's live coverage of that day. I synchronized shot # 4 with the aerial (chopper) footage broadcast by WPIX (WB11), crosschecked with aerial footage provided by WNYW (FOX5).
On a personal note : viewers who are familiar with 9/11 research or who have seen similar videos elsewhere on the internet may notice that I am using a different Time reference system than the U.S. government or researchers either directly or indirectly affiliated with them. I deny the existence of any imaginary RTVA "NIST Relative Time for Visual Analysis" or anything similar, and I believe that any confusion about time on September 11 is intentional. There is only one official time in the United States, and it is provided by the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) Master Clock. Back in 2001, it was broadcast thru the Digital Time Code of NIST's WWV /WWVB radio station. Therefore, I made my own time analysis using this official time code relayed by various TV broadcasters. Time uncertainty in this video is about 1 second.

The September 11 Attacks - Andrea Star Reese's footage (editor's cut)
This video contains the files « Andrea clip_1A.avi » to « Andrea clip9.avi » which have been released to the public by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). 29:29 »» Shot # 8 : 09:41:35 - 09:43:33 a.m. EDT;
»» 29:37 »» In this clip, in addition to the many people trapped on higher floors, there is a human arm waving a dark cloth from a broken window directly under the starboard wingtip (99th floor) @ 09h41:43 a.m.. The cloth has been visible since the beginning of the clip, but now the moving human arm can be identified;
»» 30:53 »» The famous 'waving woman' on the 94th floor, who is believed to be Edna Cintron, has moved her body again @ 09h42:59 a.m., after she had been standing there without motion for about half an hour. She miraculously survived the impact, when the left engine missed her by a few inches, also the fireball, and was then trapped at her position. She can be seen in other videos at least until 10h15 a.m., albeit from afar, and she most likely went down with the tower at 10h28 a.m.. I didn't see anybody jump from her position during the final minutes, (Cindy Weil's continuous footage);
31:32 »» Shot # 9 : bonus footage, most likely of September 12, including early clean-up operation of what used to be Building Seven.
I verified all times in EDT through synchronization of the audio track with CNN's live coverage, and also with Cindy Weil's footage, which itself I have synchronized with CNN, as well as, in part, with WPIX and WNYW. Time uncertainty is within 1 second.

The September 11 Attacks - Evan Fairbanks' footage (editor's cut)
This video contains the files « Evan Fairbanks 01.avi » to « Evan Fairbanks 13.avi », which have been released to the public by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). I added additional footage which was released through NIST FOIA #09-42 request, and which is not available on NIST's cloud server.
Videographer: Evan Fairbanks
Locations: South-eastern corner of the World Trade Center, Manhattan, NY
Time: Approx 08h50 - 10h00:11 a.m. & 04h58:55 - 05h05:01 p.m. EDT, September 11, 2001.
Evan Fairbanks had the questionable 'privilege' of being a person of interest for law enforcement officers because of some footage which he had on tape. They wanted a dub. This allowed him to shoot footage at places where other journalist had been banned from, and to document some valuable details.

22:45 »» Evan Fairbanks interviewed by Peter Jennings in the studio, ABC News live broadcast; 04h58:55 - 05h05:01 p.m. EDT; September 11, 2001.
The audio is completely missing and replaced by electronic noise on most files provided by NIST. I recovered and adjusted a portion of the audio track of about 6 minutes from a redacted clip provided by the FBI 604_WTCI_454_I.mp4, and I reduced the noise level by 15 dB for viewers comfort.
The two Port Authority Police Officers, Detective Fitzgerald and Detective Wheeler, who wanted to obtain a dub of the footage, never got this, since they were separated from Mr. Fairbanks during the dusty darkness after the collapse. However, in their written Personal Statement to the FBI they mention briefly: "The FBI did learn about and view the video that Evan Fairbanks had." The redacted FBI clip, which is publicly available, is evidence of that.
I refrain from digital image manipulation. In my opinion, any so-called 'enhancement', as observed in similar video creations elsewhere, is tampering with evidence. The September 11 Attacks - Ed Peterman's footage (editor's cut)
This video contains the files « Ed Peterman clip01.avi » to « Ed Peterman clip14.avi » which have been released to the public by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), as well as some additional footage, which was released through NIST FOIA #09-42 request, and which is not available on NIST's cloud server.
Videographer: Ed Peterman
Locations: Battery Place & Battery Park City (North Cove Marina), Manhattan, NY
Time: before 09h00 - 10h00 a.m. EDT, September 11, 2001; and on September 14.
Among the tons of footage that have been shot by numerous videographers on that day, only some videos include ground-level views from the South or from the West. Ed Peterman's limited footage offers us both of them. He started shooting from Battery Place at the southern tip of Manhattan. Then he walked waterfront along Battery Park City Esplanade north to the North Cove Marina, until he ran from the dust cloud of the first collapse, and returned to the southern tip of the city.

I established the date 'September 14' for the last two shots. There was no precipitation in New York between September 11 and 13. However, in the morning of September 14, a Friday, there was light rain, and we notice that the asphalt is moist, and the sky is covered with clouds in those shots.

The September 11 Attacks - William Cirone's footage & + (editor's cut)
This video contains the files « William Cirone 01.avi » to « William Cirone 49.avi » which have been released to the public by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). I have complemented the footage with two clips which were released via FOIA request but are not available on NIST's cloud server.
Videographer : William Cirone
Locations : Ground Zero from the East, the North, the West, Manhattan, New York
Time: approx 10h45 a.m. - 04h20 p.m. EDT, September 11, 2001.
Possibly the first video evidence after the second collapse. Mr. Cirone was apparently a photographer for the Fire Department of New Jersey. This footage is complicated. The alleged 'original' video is made up of clips which don't follow a chronological sequence. This makes orientation in time and space difficult. I tried to reconstruct a plausible walking route.
In addition, relatively important footage from West Broadway & Barclay Street is missing on NIST's server. Mr. Cirone, a firefighter, certainly would have captured on video what was going on there at a time when he also was there. I compensate the missing footage. There is reason to believe that the added material has been shot either by Mr. Cirone himself, or by the photographer who accompanied him. A male wearing a white T-shirt, short hair and glasses, visible in several of his shots throughout the day.
To facilitate spacial orientation in this smokey, dirty and dusty chaos, I have carefully identified the shooting locations :
»» 00:12 »» Cedar Street & Broadway : First looking north over the Harry B. Helmsey Plaza towards One Liberty Plaza; Then looking southeast towards Nassau Street;
»» 00:34 »» Broadway & Dey Street : First looking northwest towards Ground Zero; Then southwest towards the corner Broadway & John Street; Turning, looking southwest into Broadway & John Street; Then looking southeast into John Street; And again southwest into Broadway; Then looking northeast into Broadway towards Fulton Street; Finally moving northeast on Broadway between Dey and Fulton Streets;
»» 01:32 »» Church Street & Liberty Street, western corner of One Liberty Plaza : Looking first south over Zuchotti Park; Then northwest toward Ground Zero; Then moving north on Broadway towards Cortlandt Street, looking west;
»» 02:43 »» Church Street & Dey Street : In front of the former East River Savings Bank building; Then moving north between Dey and Fulton in front of the Millennium Hotel whilst looking towards ground Zero, actually facing 4 WTC and 5 WTC;
»» 04:32 »» West Broadway & Vesey Street i.e. the southeastern corner of 7 WTC : First overlooking Versey Street; Then moving north on West Broadway along the eastern face of 7 WTC, however not yet reaching Barclay Street;
»» 05:56 »» Additional, added footage, shot on Barclay Street and the corner West Broadway & Barclay, at a time approximately when Mr. Cirone was filming in that area; including Mr. Michael D. Hess, Corporation Counsel for New York City, calling for help when he and Mr. Barry Jennings of the city's Housing Department were trapped in Building Seven after trying to evacuate late;
»» 08:42 »» Additional, added footage, most probably shot by Mr. Cirone himself : West Broadway & Barclay Street, starting with a broken window at the southeastern corner of Filterman Hall (Borough of Manhattan Community College); Then looking east into Barclay, briefly via West Broadway south towards Ground Zero; Also a look at the famous "number 75 Barclay Street" of Mayor Giuliani; Thereafter moving via Barclay to Washington Street, the northwestern corner of 7 WTC with a view towards 6 WTC;
»» 09:54 »» Barclay Street & Washington Street : Looking along the western face of 7 WTC towards 6 WTC; Then a brief look into Barclay Street east, with Filterman Hall on the left, 7 WTC and the conEdison electricity substation on the right, and the Federal Building in the rear;
»» 10:24 »» West Street & Vesey Street : Looking at 6 WTC and briefly south into West Street;
»» 11:10 »» Additional footage, most probably shot by Mr. Cirone himself : West Street & Vesey, looking at 6 WTC and briefly north into West Street;
»» 11:36 »» West Street & Vesey Street : Looking at 6 WTC and into Vesey Street towards 7 WTC; Then turning the view southwest towards the World Financial Center (renamed Brookfield Place); And finally north into West Street;
»» 14:20 »» Additional footage, most probably shot by Mr. Cirone himself : West Street & Vesey Street, looking east towards 6 WTC and 7 WTC as well as at the Verizon Building on the left;
»» 14:54 »» West Street & Liberty Street : North of the skybridge across West Street connecting the World Financial Center with the World Trade Center, looking west at number 200, formerly known as One World Financial Center and at 225 Liberty Street (2 WFC) including the skybridge across Liberty Street connecting those two buildings; Then looking east towards Ground Zero and the remains of 3 WTC, the former Marriott Hotel;
»» 15:59 »» West Street & Cedar Street : Now south of the skybridge across West Street, looking at 200 Liberty Street (1 WFC); Looking south into West Street; And northeast to the World Trade Center;
»» 17:09 »» Albany Street & South End Avenue : First looking west towards Two World Financial Center in the rear; Strafing One World Financial Center when moving the camera and buildings at West Street in the rear; Finally a look into South End Avenue to the south;
»» 17:28 »» Vesey Street : Looking east towards 6 WTC and 7 WTC as well as at the Verizon Building;
»» 17:50 »» West Street : Looking first from 200 West St, which is today the Goldman Sachs Headquarters but was in 2001 an undeveloped parking lot, towards WTC 6; Then moving north on West Street until the Tribeca Bridge at Chambers Street.

Mark LaGanga is a photojournalist from New York who has worked primarily for CBS and affiliated producers. Having personally work-experience as a news reporter, I am highly impressed by the extraordinary quality of his work, and by his professionalism. Or, as one unidentified crew-member of one the OB trucks of CBS correctly said @ 20:23 in the dark: "You're just the best!". Consequently, portions of his footage were the very first images from the ground that viewers across the globe have seen on TV, less than half an hour after the second collapse.
CBS has created an AI enhanced Premium edition of Mr. LaGanga's footage and used it in a documentary. The present video does not use any of this.
This video has been created for exclusively educational, non-profit purposes. The usage of commercial footage shall be regarded under the conditions of 17 U.S. Code § 17 (Fair use).
Dedicated to the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and in the aftermath of that day. May they rest in Peace.
Thank you for taking the time to inform yourself.
