911 Memorial Climb San Antonio 2022 - Never Forget - A Drone View
This is the first of a series of videos that we are creating from the San Antonio 110 Organization's 10th Annual 911 Memorial Climb event. This video begins at sunrise as the participants gather together at the base of the Tower of Americas in downtown San Antonio, then shows the release of the doves and the start of the climb by the firefighters, police and other participants. The Tower is nearly 750ft tall and the participants climbed the stairs, over 600ft to the Observation Deck level, where they exited the stairwell and began to descend via the 2nd stairwell.
Towards the end of the event, there were multiple firefighters and other participants who collapsed from the 90+ degree heat inside the stairwell and had to be helped to complete the descent. There was a line of volunteers willing to return backup the stairs to help their fellow participants, so many that they had to turn some away. Those volunteers took the elevators to the top, then descended until they found the stranded people.
Yellow Rose Drones was happy to participate in this ceremonial climb for the second year in a row and looks forward to being back again in 2023. Our thanks to Jeff Dillon for acting as our volunteer observer and additional videographer during the event.

A Bird's Eye View of Luling Texas - Oil Rigs. Watermelon, Trains, BBQ & a River. #lulingtx
We spent about an hour visiting areas of Luling Texas on a Sunday afternoon. Not much happening, other than a couple of trains passing thru in opposite directions, one after the other. Their water tower, north of town on Hwy 80, promoted the river, so we stopped by Zedler Mill Park to check out the dam on the San Marcos River. Nice place to visit as a tourist, or on the second weekend of June when the Texas Water Safari passes thru.
Luling has a big celebration at the end of June for their Watermelon Thump. They're known for all the oil rigs in the area, plus apparently lots of yummy BBQ. We didn't notice any BBQ restaurants open, or we would have tested that reputation while we were there. There is another river park west of Luling, off Hwy 90, where the San Marcos River passes under the highway, that is more friendly for family access to the river.
Luling has a population of under 6k (as of the 2020 census) and is located north of IH-10 at Hwy 80 & Hwy 90.

Just a short video by drone flying around the Buc-ee's on IH-10, just east of Luling Texas. Those Beavers are almost everywhere and it's an unwritten crime in Texas to pass by one without stopping to visit. We put up one of our drones as we stopped there last weekend.

Aerial Drone View of Red Rock Canyon from Turtlehead Peak with Rain Approaching
We visited Red Rock Canyon in Nevada a couple of weeks ago. It's located just west of Las Vegas, an easy 40 minute drive from downtown. While the park has a few areas restricted from flying a drone over, they were fairly friendly to deal with.
This video was taken around the 3 or 4 mile marker, on the 13 mile Scenic Loop. It costs $15 per carload to access the visitors center and drive the loop. You can only stop in designated outlook areas and the traffic is one-way only.
Some of the peaks near this scenic outlook parking area rose more than 1,200ft above the parking lot altitude. A little known fact is that drones (in the USA) are limited to flying no higher than 400 AGL, which means 400ft Above Ground Level. Since the drone was flying in near the peaks, this meant that we could legally keep going higher and higher, as long as we were within 400ft distance from the nearby peaks. We stopped at 750 feet for safety reasons and to maintain visual line of sight with the drone.

FPV Drone Sunset Flight Over Canyon Lake Dam & Canyon Lake Gorge / Overflow Area #djifpvdrone
We went out to the Canyon Lake (TX) area yesterday for a Drone Meet-up and took some time to fly over the Canyon Lake Dam and the Overflow Area, called "The Canyon Lake Gorge." We've got a couple other videos already posted that provide the history of the Gorge and how it was created about 20 years ago.

Goldhill Outpost Lordsburg New Mexico - A Visit to an Interesting Gift Shop In The Middle of Nowhere
We recently made a trip across New Mexico and Arizona, stopping at Love's Truck Stops as needed. When we stopped in Lordsburg New Mexico, there was this tourist trap, I mean Interesting Gift Shop, located next to the truck stop and my wife wanted to investigate it. She ended up buying some handmade turquoise jewelry from a local Indian reservation for a decent price. While she was shopping, we took some photos and put a drone up in the air to capture this footage.
If you're ever in the Lordsburg area on IH-10, I've got 2 pieces of advice for you. Slow down to the speed limit because the police are very friendly in this area, and stop by this gift shop next to Love's Truck Stop. You might find something of decent quality, that wasn't made in China, to take with you.

Ghost Town in New Mexico near IH 10 A Drone View
Locals told me there was a Ghost Town located near Mile Marker 3 on IH-10, in New Mexico, as you head west toward the Arizona border. So, we made a quick stop on/off the highway last week to check it out.
Unfortunately for those looking for an abandoned ghost town, we found live residents living in this area, complete with a modern group USPS mailbox for a dozen addresses. As we were landing the drone, one of those residents arrived and pulled into the property to the right of my vehicle. They didn't say anything to us and we chose to load up and hit the road instead of staying around any longer. Guess wearing a yellow vest while flying discourages casual inquiries?
Our thanks to @docmurdocfpv for telling us about this location.

Burgess Hill Water Tower w Water Slide in Casa Grande AZ
This is another landmark that our friends in Casa Grande Arizona pointed out to us while we spent the night with them. This water tower is partially embedded in this hillside, called Burgess Hill, so that the water temperature stays cooler than it otherwise would had the tower been fully exposed to the constant 100-120 degree (F) heat during the daytime. But the interesting part to us, was that there used to be a working water slide fed by water from the tower. This water slide was apparently decommissioned a couple of decades ago due to the water shortages, but it looks like it was a lot of fun. We've not seen another water tank before that had it's own water slide. Most of the slide was still there on the hillside.

Drone Flight Past A Frito Lay Plant And Their Solar Panel Farm in Casa Grande AZ
We were staying overnight in Casa Grande Arizona and spent some time the next morning looking for scenic areas to fly over. We spotted the Frito Lay Plant with it's humongous solar panel farm and usage of more panels to provide both shade for the employees' cars and to help take the load off the local electrical grid. This is a very short edited video, less than a minute in length.

Flying a Drone Over A Hillside Covered With Saguaro Cactus Near Casa Grande AZ
While out in Casa Grande Arizona, I asked my friends where to find a field of Saguaro Cactus that I could fly a drone over. He came up with a winner! I probably should have dug out my FPV drone to get a closer up front look by flying between the cactus, but I only had my Autel Evo 2 Pro drone available that morning. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed flying around this hillside.

Drone Overfly of Abandoned Open Pit Copper Mine Near Casa Grande AZ
The Cactus Mine (formerly the Sacaton Mine) is located in Arizona at the convergence of three major geologic zones in western Pinal County, just west of Casa Grande. It was discovered in 1961 by American Smelting and Refining Co. (ASARCO) which mined the site from 1972 to 1984. During its previous operation, the mine extracted 38 million tons, with 400 million pounds of copper, 759,000 ounces of silver, and 27,000 ounces of gold from the West open pit ore body.
In 1982, construction began on the production shaft to a depth of 1,800 ft and a head frame to the southwest of the pit to access the higher-grade ore via underground mining methods; however, development was suspended due to market conditions and in 1984.
In 2009, the site was placed into the care of an environmental trust that was tasked with the care, stabilization, and reclamation of the site. This work was done under the supervision of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and the US Environmental Protection Agency.
In July 2020, the company now called Arizona Sonoran Copper (ASCU) completed the purchase of the site from the trust, taking custody of the property. As a result, ASCU will be starting its work with a remediated former mine site, with an environmental baseline study completed which has been approved by the ADEQ.

New 2022 Yellow Rose Drone Shirts Just Arrived
I commissioned some new custom casual shirts from AZFancy recently. They sure are different from my more "dress casual" grey polo shirts with the logo on the front left. The idea was to provide visibility without needing the vest. I'll still wear the vest and possibly hard hat when the situation warrants for commercial gigs.

Using a Drone to Watch a Farmer Harvesting a Cornfield During Drought Season
We were on our way between Seguin and New Braunfels Texas when we spotted these tractors harvesting out in the cornfield. We stopped to look, stuck a drone in the air, and the rest is in the video. We did hang around long enough to talk with the driver of the tractor that was pulling the trailer. He told us that this field normally yields about 4 18-Wheeler sized trailers worth of corn, but because of the drought conditions, he questioned if it would even fill up 2 full trailers his year.
He explained that the cost of planting and harvesting the field was higher, due to the economic conditions, but for half of the yield. Diesel fuel for the combine, tractor and 18-wheeler with it's trailer, were more than double the cost from 2 years ago. Fertilizer and the initial seed were higher as well.

Medina Lake (TX) Water Level Down to Only 11% on July 25, 2022 - A Drone View #drought
Much of the country is suffering from drought conditions and Texas is no different. At the suggestion from one of our regular viewers, Sally, we headed out to Medina Lake after grabbing our Evo 2 Pro drone at the house. We got there just before sunset, so you'll see a little of that toward the end of this video.
[Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medina_Lake]
Medina Lake is a reservoir on the Medina River in the Texas Hill Country of the United States. It is operated by the Bexar/Medina/Atascosa County Agricultural District. Medina Dam was completed in 1913 in a privately financed project, creating the lake to supply irrigation water for local agricultural use. Lake Medina is in northeastern Medina County, and southeastern Bandera County, about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of San Antonio.
It is a crescent-shaped reservoir running west to east. It is 18 miles (29 km) long and 3 miles (5 km) wide at its broadest point. It is contained by the Medina Dam at the lake's south end. At the time of the dam's construction, it was the largest concrete dam in the country and the fourth largest dam overall. The dam is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The lake is fed by and discharges back into the Medina River, and serves both recreational and irrigation uses. Communities located along the lake are Mico, Lake Medina Shores and Lakehills.
Our launch point was from Red Cove Marina, near the Dam end of the lake. We've tried to point out some landmarks along the shoreline to help folks recognize what's left of the lake.

SeaWorld San Antonio - Watching a Sunset Roller Coaster & Very Short Fireworks Show - A Drone View
We went out tonight at sunset to try out the DJI Mini 3 Pro drone in lower light conditions. Turned out winds were 15mph, gusting to 25mph, so it got a good workout in that regard as well. We took some sunset photos, but the sunset was rather bland tonight, so we spun the drone around 90 degrees and watched folks riding the roller coaster for a short while.
About 30 minutes later, we put the drone back up in the air to watch their (very short) fireworks show. Since it's not a holiday, we weren't really expecting much of a show, but they did at least blow some stuff up for our entertainment.

San Antonio 5th Annual Winter in July 2022 5k/10k/10mi Run for St Jude Children Research Hospital
This was the 5th Annual Winter in July benefit run for the St Jude Children Research Hospital. Hundreds of runners signed up to run and raise funds for St Jude. Dozens of vendors were sponsoring the event. This was a new route for 2022 and utilized the city's network of greenbelt bicycle and running paths in a mostly shaded area surrounded by tall trees.
The location was at Martin Luther King Park on the east side of San Antonio Texas. Weather was in the low 80's, with cloud cover and high humidity. No snow was in the forecast, which was good, because could you imagine how much of a hassle it would be to shovel show in this heat?

Police Chase in Comal County Caught on Dash Cam - July 15 2022
I was driving Friday afternoon on Hwy 46, between Seguin and New Braunfels, Texas, when I almost got involved in an accident. Police were chasing this white GMC pickup truck heading away from New Braunfels, past Clear Springs, when I caught this on my dash cam.
I'm fortunate that the car next to me didn't crash into me as they tried to avoid the oncoming truck that swerved into the wrong lane. It was almost a head on collision twice, once with the black SUV ahead of me in the left lane, and a second time with the black car next to me in that same lane. I swerved to the right out of instinct, more than by intention, and that saved both of us from colliding.
The truck did lose control after it went past me, swerving across both oncoming lanes and into the ditch to my right. I don't know if the truck hit anyone traveling behind me or not.

76ft Tall Stephen F Austin Statue @ Historical Park in Brazoria County Texas - A Drone View Series
This statue has been on my bucket list for several years, ever since I spotted it on my way down to Surfside Beach on the Texas Gulf Coast for a Kite Flying Festival. I spent this past weekend back down at the coast, for another kite festival of course, and had the time on my way back home the next morning to stop and fly here.
Stephen F. Austin-Munson Historical County Park represents a unique private-public partnership, and is a culmination of years of community support for Brazoria County’s most famous resident, Stephen F. Austin, “the Father of Texas,” as he was first called by fellow early Texan, Sam Houston. Following a ground-swell of support at the turn of the 21st Century to build a monument to appropriately honor Austin, local residents raised funds to construct the statue and facility grounds. Today, it is the first county-run historic site and is now open to the public five days per week (Wed-Sunday).
The park features 10 acres, with its centerpiece an iconic, 76-foot tall statue of Stephen F. Austin, which was designed by famed Texas sculptor David Adickes. The Park and statue are located just off Hwy 288 west of Angleton. The complex includes a visitor and information center with gift shop, picnic areas, and a Texas-shaped pond in the back of the property where catch-and-release fishing is permitted.
