Prime Minister or Cleaning Toilets | Human Imperfections. 🙂
Whether your a Prime Minister or whether your cleaning toilets. Your doing it within your human imperfections. 🙂
I learnt the hard way when I couldn't shower or feed myself, there's so much outside of our control as humans, even within our own body. It's why we've all experienced smashing one of our small toes on the side of a random piece of furniture without wanting to. No one wants to hurt themselves, but we do, because we're not perfect. It's a great example of the human condition we all live within but never fully control or fathom.
People will claim to understand life, trying to guide their own existence or those around them, learning different methods, trying to harness the unknown, relationships, finances, emotions, endless solutions. People will also try to take control of their own response to the outside world around them. I also picture the same people crashing their car in a parking lot and scratching their head saying, "How the f🙂ck did I do that". I picture them bumping their head on a doorway, cutting their finger cooking, with a knife they were controlling.
I can't but help remember my past and current life experiences of trauma, suffering and grief. It dances into the grey areas of the unknown, into the beauty of the human experience. I think control over ones life is spoken from the mouths' of the naive, privileged circumstance, promoted in wealthy countries with unbalanced resources, taught inside sheltered upbringings, exploited on TV screens and smart phone apps. Digested through ears while jogging.
The more I learn, the older we get, the less I know. Even when we trip over and cut our knee, life is still a gift worth savoring. 🙂

I'd prefer to stay as disabled as I was than re-integrate into the society I have to normalize to.
The intense emotional states during recovery are hard to fathom. You just feel so alone. Everything feels so out of touch, no matter how close a loved one may be, they just somehow feel unreachable at times. But it does pass, but it is a long drawn out process that most people never come close to experiencing their entire lives. The memories can be difficult to cope with. Some moments in time return like a steam train catching unawares, the scars can run hauntingly deep, and even joyous occasions can still be struck down in the heart with unanswered questions and ongoing physical and cognitive problems that never let you forget. But that is life, we all have a story, it's all relative, the depth of my pain is the depth of my joy. To be totally honest, I'm just thankful I'm still f**king breathing. Life is a gift, corny but true.
The broken, vulnerable foundation of the recovery journey from a severe cognitive and physical disability. The footage is harsh & genuine, it forces you to take notice, the words linger in your brain. 🙂

Man In His 30's Has Never ever had a Girlfriend
This man was in his early 30's, not yet been with a woman leading up to this point in his life. He had never had a girlfriend. This topic was discussed openly during the interview. It was one of many thought provoking and challenging topics we discussed together. These basic issues can be swept under the carpet in our daily lives. Many people can suffer in silence, and have never felt validated or heard. Their physical and emotional needs taboo, awkwardly passed by in discussion, with any outcomes of genuine change and quality of life ignored. Do people really talk to each other anymore outside the superficial? We are sexual, it is part of being human. One of many assets we hold. I honor and appreciate his willingness to be honest and real.
❤️ In your adult life have you had a girlfriend?
😮 I .. honestly .. I've .. um .. they seem that they went away.
I haven't worried about really trying to do that yet, I have hoped.
❤️ Surely you've at times, thought it would be nice to have a girlfriend?
😮 Yeh
❤️ Or a wife?
😮 Yep
❤️ Or children?
😮 Yes
❤️ Is it sometimes hard not having that in your life?
😮 Yes
Cognitive, intellectual, physical and mental health disabilities can be a place of loneliness and isolation. So can sickness, social economics, race, age and addiction. Many overlap. It can be difficult to find a sexual partner or genuine long term friendships under any circumstances. I still struggle socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically. It is ok to talk about this stuff, it's a normal part of the process toward finding good, meaningful quality of life. Both short term and long term outcomes needed. I have been through hell and back and can confidently say society is quite awkward toward those of indifference. That doesn't stop the heart from beating or one's longing to be loved, wanted and enjoyed through human connection and meaningful relationship.

Pregnancy | Fatherhood | Loss | We weren't able to conceive naturally
Without IVF treatment this man would not have been able to experience fatherhood.
We lost a child, tragically, it's spine bent on right angles and all her organs weren't connected. We had quite a few miscarriages. We weren't able to conceive naturally. My wife had to give birth early because our baby was going to die. We needed a miracle beyond miracles. Both our children are IVF kids.
For some couples, pregnancy can be a difficult, stressful period. Researching and trialing alternative methods towards a healthy and safe pregnancy. Working towards the long term outcome of a healthy child birth and the gift of raising a family.
Interviewing this man's heartbreaking journey surrounding his fatherhood was a thought provoking conversation and process. It made me appreciate my wife. It made me appreciate my children. It made me appreciate life. It's a reminder that suffering is a normal, balanced part of the human experience. We each have a story, a journey that defines our character. Embrace each step, be thankful for the gift of life. May we grow in both winter snow storms and summer plains. May we appreciate the life we have been given and the relationships we get to partake in, warts and all. 🙂

Difficult Sides Of Life | Disability Rehabilitation
The broken, vulnerable foundation of the recovery journey from a severe cognitive and physical disability. This short video clip is from the full length documentary film Roadz Of Life. The footage is harsh & genuine, it forces you to take notice, the words linger in your brain.
Roadz Of Life explores some of the more difficult sides of life. Sharing our stories and struggles can also encourage others to reach out about how they are feeling too. Beautiful, artistic, raw, down to earth, outside the box film making. Roadz Of Life Jump starts your feelings and thoughts like an ice bath. These are complex topics.
It is good to open up and talk about how we are feeling, talking about our thoughts with those we love and feel safe with is a great aspect of life. Communication connects us to our families or friends in a world that can sometimes feel very big and overwhelming. Modern life is intense. Negative thoughts and feelings are a normal part of being human and finding people we feel safe to share our thoughts and feelings with is healthy. Regular communication in bite size chunks can be a wonderful way of regulating emotions, in preventing unnecessary long-term breakdowns in daily life. We can't deny our humanity or imperfections that make us unique. Opening up about our struggles debunks the mystery and taboo, it empowers us to find connection and realize we all have our struggles, it gives us tools and support to walk through the chapters of our life. No matter how alone we may think we are there is always a helpline or support service that can lend a helping hand if we feel like we can't find supportive people around us. If you or a loved one are struggling, be ok to ask for help. These are complex topics within the human condition that need to be respected and a healthy part of the journey we call life, shedding light into the shadows of the mind. Let us find creative ways to open up and find support. It's like that corny old saying together we stand divided we fall. Let us realize we are not alone.

Aussie Advice | F**k Circumstances
F**k circumstances, good days, bad days come and go. What matters is who you go through it with. I'd rather have a bad day in marriage, than have a good day and not be married.
Let's make a little jingle. I'll record it live in the toilet and tap a beat with my hands while my son rocks out with some sliced apple and a home made sweater. Sophisticated Aussie wisdom at it's finest. Like an open bottle of red wine left in the sun for a week.
I'd rather have a sh#t day
Than lose a wife
Or watch her walk out
Than have a nice life 🙂
Funny Australian Beach Wisdom
Jokes aside, the appreciation of those we love in times of hardship and suffering galvanize us in unity. Walking through the valleys of grief together strengthens relationships. It deepens the foundations of our connection. It can draw out understanding and give us a more wholistic perspective on unrealistic expectations the world can sometimes project through the modern ego. The scars found on an animal in the wild reveal its ability to learn, adapt, survive and ultimately thrive. Less acknowledged are the bones of the majority that do not make the journey, laying in the desert sun, comforting each others starvation, withering together in relationship. Imagine the abundant life when the rains come flooding down and the flesh rehydrates. Money and Master Classes cannot buy this kind of joy. 🙂

Felt Like A Dream | Bizarre Symptoms | Onset of Disability
The sudden onset of a disability can be a traumatizing experience. Involving the immediate loss of ones identity, creating total confusion. Basic adult independence we base our entire lives around can be stripped from you in a single breath.
The initial onset of symptoms for me was a scary and blurred state of reality. Bizarre symptoms. Life felt like a dream, nothing felt real, you are in survival mode, like a cat permanently treading water in a swimming pool that cannot escape. It's as if you have suddenly taken on someone else's identity, nothing feels real anymore. Your body and mind no longer operate. Seconds fade into eternity. When you are awake you are fighting just to exist. Your trying to find a way out, out of that swimming pool, back to your former self, the life you once had. It takes a long time to accept ones new identity, the limitations and scars, loss of relationships, time passed in solitude. The puzzles float around your broken mind and body with disconcertion. For most the process takes many years, for others it can melt into decades, many never come out of the dream, lost forever in a maze. The journey either makes you or breaks you.
The blessings and learnings within these extreme levels of suffering are great and not to be underestimated. Everything balances out in the end. Maybe not in the consumeristic way of shallow social successes, career goals or bought acquisitions, far removed from self centered control over ones life. It cannot be learned, earned, bought or practiced. It's just basic life experience that comes with such extreme circumstances. I am genuinely thankful I have walked through such a colorful life. I am grateful for the people that shared each part of that journey with me. Every time I hold my children in my arms or hear my wife's voice I cannot describe the deepest level of thankfulness in my heart. But lets be honest, my body is F😮CKED.

Walk Inside The Trauma
Graphic memories and footage, drawing you into a poetic story. Experiencing humanity through a traumatic physical and cognitive injury, walk inside the recovery process during the peak of an emotion recovery, daily rehabilitation marathon runners would not dare. In the silence, the small unheard moments, time shows wounds, and the simple connections to nature, those we love that reflect a deeper role than the superficial scars we all carry. Inside a larger world that sometimes makes us feel left behind on the lonely roads of recovery.
Scream out desperate groans, I find more healing, peace, answers and connection in my shattered remains, in my broken down body. More understanding and logic in a simple beach walk, with those I love.

As I lay like a cripple in a pool of sweat
Recalling early stages of onset of a disability in artistic video and poetic Spoken Word.
As I lay like a cripple in a pool of sweat, I want to forgive. It hurts, starved of sleep, the damage, stuttering my broken sentences, shattering memories. My muscles burning, waiting for their final words that would surely break my spirit. In total distress, I push my torso off the bed, trying to swallow the pain and humiliation.
Frantically trying to roll a cigarette, that only fuels my embarrassing
frustration more within the hopeless futility, my failing mind and hands. She gently touches my arm and rolls me a cigarette in silence, unaware her shown intellect cripples my heart further. A gentle silence within these silent, hellish hours this silent unspoken weeks and months in recovery. Falling into years.
Unable to swallow food, unaware of the damage to my brain or throat. Being forced to sip simple smoothies that were hard to keep down and made me choke vomiting up my tablets that get stuck in my throat. Bumping into door frames, pantries and corridors with no spatial awareness, coordination shot, with cuts and bruises on the skin to show. Unable to keep track of the thin red line of urgency, my body needed. Life threatening replenishment. Continuing extreme, constant voluntary movements that push my starving parched body to dangerous limits.
Without sleep, my jaw clenched in pain as if permanently chewing gum, confused of my surroundings drenched in sweat, my heart being pushed to dangerous deathly limits. Pounding in my chest, hearing the sounds reverberating in my ears like nightclub speakers. Overwrought veins visually pumping out of my entire body with no fat to hide them. A skeleton of skin and bone with wiry, fatigued muscles. Burning pain beyond limits. I will never in no way ever be able to describe on a mental level. Worn out desperation, the mind becoming shut down, pain barriers and exhaustion to limits marathon runners would not dare. Drenching sweat, tears, moans. Screams, clothed in the same dirty rags for weeks on end. No comprehension of hygiene or physical appearance. Underpants dirtier than an unleashed toilet. Such confusion.
A shaggy beard, crusty teeth, barefooted. Movement and exhaustion without any free will. No choice to stop. Suffering, almost permanent states of insomnia. A shabby mess, no track time. Unaware up to maybe five days, maybe more, no sleep. The body passing out from exhaustion. No memory of when you dropped or when you woke up, or how you even got there, before another sleepless marathon begins.
Note 2 Self | Part 1 | A powerful short 3 minute artistic video and poetic representation recalling early stages of onset of a disability.

I Tried To Cut My Hand Off | intense interviews footage montage
I come out with things, explaining words are wrong. But I used to eat flowers. I didn't know right from wrong. A really hard time. All my knees were purple for many, many years. | - brain injury victim - | Interview quote
The words of a woman hit by a drunk driver as a child, causing severe brain damage and body scarring.
I can't fault my life | Montage Mayhem | Interview footage montage
I can relate to these people I spoke to on camera during interview. My own story is just as wild and intense. Everyone experiences life from a different perspective but we all experience difficult seasons. It's all relative. Walking through such seasons is far more grueling when we are alone, or feel like we are alone.
Hope is an important aspect of recovery, even when everything seems lost 🙂

Committed into an asylum | interview | speaking with her
Placed in an asylum, she shares her experience, first time was age 17, she is now over 60, terrible problems like hallucinations, drastically affecting her quality of life to the point of being committed. It is hard to fathom such large amounts of time in ones life being so drastically altered by what must have seemed at the time such a minor decision. She now suffers involuntary movements that she feels are embarrassing. During my own recovery process I spoke with this elderly woman on camera. I can relate to her story, we discussed openly the suffering we had both faced.

The last six years have been hell.
Waking up in the middle of the night wondering if I'm gonna be alive.
-That sucks...--
Yep, wondering if I can wake up and go to work.. be like a normal person.. come home and be a good dad, not a lost character.
-If you had a dream, it would mean your life wasn't the way it is?-
Yes, to have a house, to have my daughter, to have my mum love me.
-When did you last see your daughter?-
Six months ago on a bus, eight years since I've actually spent time with her.
-Do you think of your daughter?-
When I go to sleep, when I wake up every morning, and every second in between then.
Drug addiction is a mirrored reflection of how many of us feel inflicted inwardly when facing relationships, society & the surrounding world. Addiction echoes the existing cracks in a flawed society that slowly pushes people to escape.

Scream Out Desperate Groans
Walk inside the trauma.
