Is there any Zakat on rental cars and vehicles that companies own for moving produce?
Answer By Dr Zakir Naik,As far as possessing vehicles given on rent the same view is used as houses on rent, the same thing. So majority of the scholars say that if its vehicle given on rent, no Zakaat is there on that vehicle, fine if it's a taxi driver who is a poor person who has one taxi and his earnings is just a few 100 dollars a month or a few thousand rupees a month but natural you pay Zakaat on the cost of the vehicle, on the taxi, it will be too much for him so I agree that there should be no Zakaat on the cost of the vehicle but on the other hand if you have a person who owns a fleet of cars may be a thousand cars, you know we have Hertz and these big-big companies who own thousands of cars, now for them that itself becomes an asset, you know, they give on rent and they keep on buying every few months hundreds and thousands of cars so I believe that if it's a fleet of cars and if it is given on rent then the cost price, the depreciated cost price, don't take the cost at which you have bought the car, take the depreciated cost every year keep on taking out depreciation but give it at that value, you give 2½% Zakaat, that will be preferable. So I agree more with those same group of scholars Shaikh Qardawi, Ibn Aqueel, Ibn ul Arbi, Shaikh Abu Zohra, Abdur Rahman Al Hassan and all these group of scholars

If a person invest real estate, that is zakat paid on rent or regional value?
Answer By Dr Zakir Naik,As far as the view of the majority of the scholars is concerned, what they say that if the land has been purchased for selling so that you make a profit then all the scholars unanimously agree that Zakaat should be given on it as we discussed in the last answer. That the moment one year is completed the land that you purchased Zakaat has to be paid on it. But if you have land and if you give it on rent, means if you buy a house and give it on rent, majority of the scholars say that Zakaat is not applicable on the value of the house. Zakaat is only applicable on the rent you receive, the moment you receive the rent and if it stays with you for a period of 1 year and if it's above the Nisaab level then you have to pay Zakaat on the rent not on the value of the house, the flat or the land. But now a days most of the people that purchase land for investment, they give it on rent so here we had a dilemma that people who purchase land mainly the purpose is investment but if they think that they'll buy the land they'll sell after 4-5 years when the price rises so but natural they don't want to keep it vacant so they keep it on rent to a person who requires to stay in that flat.

Regarding the Nisaab level or cattle or livestock?
Answer By Dr Zakir Naik,As far as animal is concerned only those animals that are used for grazing that freely graze and you don't have to feed them though, no one has to feed them like camels, cows, goat, sheep on them Zakaat is liable. For other animals where the owner has to feed them with hay like horse etc., for them Zakaat is not liable but natural if its sold and if the money is used and if the money is kept and if it reaches above Nisaab level, if it's kept with you for one year them Zakaat is liable. But generally directly Zakaat is only on the cattle, camel, cow, goat, sheep and the Nisaab level for camel is 5 camels, for the cow it is 30 and for goat and sheep it is 40 and there is a Hadith of Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) its mentioned in
Sahih Bukhari vol. no. 2 in the Book of Zakaat Hadith no. 1454 that
"Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said that he will take Zakaat from the people and he gives Allah's Messenger, he quotes him and says that he said that "for every 5 camels, one sheep should be given."
The Nisaab for the camel is 5, and for every 5 camels, 1 sheep should be given as Zakaat and as the camels keep on increasing the Zakaat keeps on changing, for the sheep once it reaches 40 then you have to give one sheep, below 40 there is no Zakaat. 40 is the Nisaab level for the sheep. If it reaches 40 then one sheep should be given. Between 40 and 120 it is one sheep. Between 120 and 200 sheep it is 2 sheep. Between 200 and 300 sheep it is 3 sheep and then additionally for every 100 sheep there is one sheep.

If the person doesn't pay zakaat in previous year?
Answer By Dr Zakir Naik,As we discussed a few days earlier Ramadhaan -- the month of Repentance, there are some criteria for repentance. If you have done something wrong, agree it is wrong, stop it immediately, don't do it in future and if you can undo it. So if you know not paying Zakaat is wrong, agree it is wrong not paying Zakaat, stop it that means stop not paying Zakaat, that means start paying Zakaat, see to it that you don't stop paying Zakaat, keep on continue paying Zakaat and you can undo it. Undo it means you have to pay Zakaat because that belongs to the poor people, the 8 categories of people, so you are depriving them of their wealth which is rightfully theirs. So if you have not paid Zakaat for a few years and now you have realized that you have to pay Zakaat so you have to roughly calculate what was the amount of Zakaat they had to pay each year. So if you haven't paid for 5 years, roughly calculate, if you can exactly, if you know what was your saving and what was your asset then calculate exactly. If you cannot then whatever you can do best of your ability so that your conscious is clear, go back whether it's 5 years, 10 years, 15 years give 2½% of the each year's asset you had, the saving you had and give it as soon as possible, the sooner you do it, the better it is. That is the best way of repenting and InshaAllah, Allah will increase your wealth.

What is Nisaab on Gold and Silver?
Answer By Dr Zakir Naik, Zakaat percent is 2½ percent, the nisaab level for gold is 85 grams of gold or 7½ tola and for silver the Nisaab is 595 grams of silver or 52½ tola of silver.Ibn Maajah in the Book of Zakaat Hadith no. 1791 its mentioned that
"Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says that the Prophet used to take half dinaar for every 20 dinaar And one dinaar for every 40 Dinaar. That means 1/40th of the portion or percentage wise 2½%. So whatever gold do you have with you whether 85 grams of gold or above you have to give 2.5% of that gold if it is with you for one year in Zakaat.

what is the correct Nisaab for farm produce
Answer By Dr Zakir Naik, Allah says in the Qur'an in Surah Baqarah ch. no. 2 verse no. 267 "Give of what you have lawfully earned.....Give of the good things you have earned and the fruits of the earth which we have produced for you." there are 2 types of farm produce, one farm produce which does not require any human labor or irrigation and they are watered by the rain water, no human labor is required, no irrigation, on this farm produce 10% Zakaat is liable... 10%, should be given on the day of harvest. And those on which water is required by the human beings i.e. man made irrigation or labor is required on them 5% Zakaat is liable on the day of harvest. And for those items which are perishable fruits etc. like orange, mango, banana, grapes all of them Zakaat is not liable but if you sell and if you make a profit and if that profit is kept with you for a year and if it reaches above Nisaab level then Zakaat is not liable on that.

Zakat applicable on money that you have loaned out?
Answer By Dr Zakir Naik. As far as money that is lend, anything lend whether it is gold that is given on loan or silver or money or currency, the person who owns that he has to pay Zakaat on it though I know that the one you have lend to but natural without any Riba without interest that is Haraam in Islam, if you have lend to someone then the person who owns it has to pay, and the person who uses it doesn't have to pay and you have to calculate it for example if you have given for a business deal saying that we share the Profit then it is your money, yet you have to pay the Zakaat.

We can use zakat in release of the captives?
Answer By Dr Zakir Naik In the context of today if there are some Muslim captives who are prisoners of war and if some money can be given to the people who are held them captive and if they free them then Zakaat money can be used to free the Muslims.
5th category mentioned in Surah Tawbah ch. 9 verse no. 60 which says 'can be used for 'riqab' i.e. freeing the captives. There is a Hadith which is mentioned in Musnad Ahmad Vol. no. 4 Hadith no. 18647 where "Once a person comes to Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) and asks him that "What things should I do that will take me closer to Jannah i.e. paradise and take me away from hell?" So the Prophet tells him that "set free a life and liberate a slave."
