1 in 3 New Yorkers spends half their income on rent_ ‘staggering’ report
As one of the most expensive cities in the world, it should come as no surprise that a third of New Yorkers are forking over half their income for rent. NY Post reporter Brooke Kato shares this story.
The devastating data comes from the latest report from the nonprofit the Community Service Society of New York, which found that 55% of households, or nearly 1.2 million households, in the Big Apple were “rent-burdened” in 2021, meaning tenants spent at least 30% of their income on rent.
A staggering 34% of the city’s tenants were classified as “severely rent-burdened,” spending at least half their income on monthly rent as rates soar well above the median income.
In short: Housing is becoming too expensive for the average New Yorker.
It’s not necessarily a new trend — since 2005, the average NYC renter has been rent-burdened, according to the report, which is based on answers to the city’s Housing and Vacancy Survey.

Atlanta cancer doctor put on leave after post celebrating Hamas’ ‘glory’
An Atlanta cancer doctor has been put on leave after sharing a pro-Hamas Facebook post, where she celebrated the “glory” of the terrorist group and wished for “no peace on stolen land.”
Dr. Abeer N. AbouYabis, who works for Emory Winship Cancer Institute, took to Facebook this week to wish “glory to all resistance fighters” on her account, which has now been made private.
“I needed to say it LOUD,” she wrote in the poetic-style post. “They got walls, we got gliders / Glory to all resistance fighters / Palestine is our demand / No peace for stolen land / Not another nickel, not another dollar / We will pay for Israel slaughter / Not another nickel, not another dime / We will pay for Israel crime.”
She has since been placed on leave from her prestigious position, the institute confirmed to the New York Post.
“We condemn such comments in the strongest possible terms and have immediately placed this individual on administrative leave pending an internal investigation,” spokesperson Laura Diamond told The Post.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon dials back DJ hobby after backlash_ report
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon has dialed back his DJing hobby following a flurry of criticism that his controversial side gig is distracting to the investment bank’s business, people familiar with his decision told the Financial Times. NY Post Business reporter Shannon Thaler shares this story.
Solomon, known on dance club stages as DJ D-Sol, made the decision to stop spinning records at high-profile events about a year ago after it generated unwanted media attention that correlated Goldman’s pitfalls to its boss’s hobby, the people told FT.
The 61-year-old financier has been spinning records since 2015 — three years before he was named top dog at Goldman.
However, it wasn’t until he stepped into the CEO position that his hobby drew criticism from insiders who had a hard time believing Solomon could diversify Goldman’s business away from investment banking and trading by day while spinning discs at parties by night.
It was in 2019 that his DJing attracted unwanted scrutiny from the investment bank’s board — which Solomon chairs — who weren’t thrilled with his decision to join the lineup at Tomorrowland, FT earlier reported, as the decadent European dance-music festival is known for its undulating throngs of naked, sweaty, drug-fueled revelers.

Greta Thunberg smirks during arrest while at oil protest in London
Greta Thunberg was seen smirking as the climate activist was being detained by London police and hauled into a van after she was arrested at an oil protest.
The 20-year-old Swedish native was wearing a gray beanie and puffer coat as two officers ushered her into a police van with more than a dozen people who were arrested, according to The Guardian.
Six were busted for obstructing the highway, while 14 others were arrested for disrupting public order.
Thunberg had joined hundreds of other protesters for the Oily Money Out protest outside the five-star hotel, InterContinental. The protest was organized by Fossil Free London, a climate campaign group.
“Behind these closed doors at the oil and money conference, spineless politicians are making deals and compromises with lobbyists from destructive industries, the fossil fuel industry,” the activist told journalists.
“People all over the world are suffering and dying from the consequences of the climate crisis caused by these industries who we allow to meet with our politicians and have privileged access to.”

Hundreds killed at Gaza hospital amid conflicting claims
About 500 Palestinians were killed in a blast at a Gaza hospital on Tuesday (October 17) that Palestinian health authorities said was caused by an Israeli air strike but that the Israeli military blamed on a failed rocket launch by a Palestinian militant group.
The blast was the bloodiest single incident in Gaza since Israel launched an unrelenting bombing campaign against the densely populated territory in retaliation for a deadly cross-border Hamas assault on southern Israeli communities on Oct. 7.
It took place on the eve of a visit by U.S. President Joe Biden to Israel to show support for the country in its war with Hamas, the Islamist group that rules the Gaza Strip, and to hear how Israel plans to minimize civilian casualties.
Reuters could not independently verify who was responsible for the blast.
The health minister in the Hamas-run government of Gaza, Mai Alkaila, accused Israel of a massacre. A Gaza civil defense chief said 300 people were killed and a health ministry official said 500 were killed.

I live in an abandoned hospital — I’m so scared of ghosts that I run from room to room
She’s got a sick house — with an emergency room and X-ray equipment to boot. NY Post Features reporter Asia Grace shares this story.
While the cost of living is at a ghoulish all-time high, seeing rent in major cities skyrocket to spooky sums, an intrepid dweller has managed to score a cost-free, sprawling estate nestled in the heart of London. And her new home’s filled with tender love — and the ghosts of inpatient care.
“POV: You live in an abandoned hospital but are also scared of everything, so running is the only way to get around,” penned property guardian Aisha Barratt, 35, in the closed captions of her trending, creepy UK crib tour shared to TikTok.
“I’m living in fear!” she titled the clip, in part, which scared up over 564,000 views.
In separate, yet equally bone-chilling, snippets, Barratt, who doubles as a television producer, regularly showcases the freaky features of her deserted residence, where she’s lived for over a year.

The Israeli music festival Hamas slaughtered had its roots in peace and love
The unfortunate reality is wherever there is good, evil is always one step behind plotting its downfall — because evil only knows how to take from the good. NY Post contributor Adam Coleman shares this story.
Organizers billed the Supernova Sukkot Gathering, the music festival Hamas besieged, killing 260 people, injuring many more and kidnapping who knows how many, as a celebration of “friends, love, and infinite freedom.”
It tragically became the opposite.
Those there were people of peace whose bodies were violated in the most heinous ways imaginable and even brazenly paraded around in the back of pickup trucks like they were hunted animal carcasses, as in the case of German national Shani Louk, whose nearly naked body was even spat on in the streets of Gaza.
The attendees were people whose primary philosophy is rooted in openness and acceptance — yet in a split second evil forced them to take cover and hide to survive the unprovoked assault.

Trump fraud trial in NYC_ ‘Victory will be mine,’ AG Letitia James says, leaving court
New York Attorney General Letitia James said “victory will be mine” as she left court Tuesday, and blasted Trump for trying to “distract” from the trial.
“I’m sure he will be back again, and again — he will attempt to distract each and every one of you, attempt to raise his voice and scream,” James said. “But at the end of the day, justice will be served — and I’m confident victory will be mine.”
James made the comments after Trump returned to the lower Manhattan courthouse Tuesday following more than a weeklong break.

Constant notifications are ruining your health — 7 tips to ease ‘ringxiety’
Instagram likes, missed calls, unread emails — the pings of texts, apps and even work communications are wreaking havoc on our minds. NY Post reporter Brooke Kato shares this story.
While the addictive dopamine hit of online validation may feel exhilarating in the moment, experts warn that incessant notifications can result in poor mental health.
“The delineation between work and leisure life doesn’t exist anymore,” Adelphi University professor and “Living with Depression” author Deborach Serani told Yahoo Life. “And the ability to reach out and get things in seconds interrupts the developing skills of patience and endurance.”
Adults spend about half their lives staring at screens, reports estimate, and the average American checks their phones an estimated 144 times per day.
“In today’s era, we have pings coming from multiple places, including phone calls, text messages and direct messaging from a variety of apps and social media platforms,” said Dr. Jacques Ambrose, a neuro-interventional psychiatrist and senior medical director at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irvine Medical Center.

Cornell University professor calls Hamas terror attack ‘exhilarating’ and ‘exciting’
A Cornell University professor was caught on camera telling students Hamas’ terror attack on Israel — which has left more than 1,400 dead — was “exhilarating” and “energizing.”
The remarks were made at a pro-Palestine protest by Russell Rickford, an associate professor of history at the top-tier Ithaca, New York, school and posted online Sunday by a student who called them “shameful.”
The footage of Rickford’s impassioned speech was also shared with The Post by two other tipsters. They declined to say when and where exactly the rally took place, but both said they were shocked by the brazen remarks.
The prof said the coordinated Oct. 7 attack, in which militants broke through concrete walls and paraglided into Israel to indiscriminately murdered civilians “shifted the balance of politics and punctured the illusion of invincibility” of Israel, which has imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip since terrorist group Hamas seized power there in 2007.
“That’s what they’ve done. You don’t have to be a Hamas supporter to recognize it,” he said.

Georgia man slapped with $1.4M speeding ticket for driving 35 mph over limit
A man caught speeding down a Georgia freeway was bewildered when cops slapped him with a $1.4 million ticket last month.
Connor Cato was driving home through Savannah on Sept. 2 when the Georgia State Patrol caught him doing 90 in a 55-mile-per-hour zone, he admitted to WSAV-TV.
While he expected a hefty fine, Cato was astounded when he was handed the seven-figure charge.
He called the court, assuming the fee was a typo, but reportedly was told he either had to pay the sum or appear in court.
“‘$1.4 million,’ the lady told me on the phone. I said, ‘This might be a typo’ and she said, ‘No, sir, you either pay the amount on the ticket or you come to court on Dec. 21 at 1:30 p.m.,'” he told the local outlet.

Grubhub driver caught eating ‘mouthfuls’ of customer’s food on video
A California Grubhub driver redefined the expression “dine and dash” after allegedly gobbling down food that he was supposed to deliver to a customer, as seen in a viral video.
“I hope he never delivers to anyone again,” Martin Luzanilla, CEO of Mexihana’s Hibachi Grill in Long Beach, where the preemptive bite took place, told ABC 7.
The restaurant boss said he first grew suspicious after seeing surveillance footage of an unidentified Grubhub courier eating from a customer’s order while sitting in the parking lot in front of the Japanese-Mexican fusion restaurant.
“I noticed that he was untying the bag and started chowing down on the food,” described Luzanilla.

Madonna proves she’s a survivor at Celebration tour kickoff in London after health scare
There was hit after hit — pretty much one for every year in four decades of music — during Madonna’s Celebration Tour that kicked off at the O2 in London Saturday. NY Post Senior Entertainment writer Chuck Arnold shares this story.
But the most special moments revealed the humanity behind the 65-year-old woman that sometimes has been overshadowed in 40 years living not only as the Queen of Pop but one of the most famous people on the planet.
There was when she sang an a capella “Little Star” — from her 1997 classic “Ray of Light” — instead of “Happy Birthday” for oldest daughter Lourdes, who turned 27 on the same day her mother launched her 40th-anniversary tour.
And then she talked about the Israel-Hamas war in a way that made you feel as if she was just like all mothers out there, frightened for their children.
“It breaks my heart to see children suffering, teenagers suffering, elderly people suffering. All of it is heartbreaking,” she said. “But even though our hearts are broken, our spirits cannot be broken … We can unite in a dark and evil way, or we can unite from a place of light and love. And if we all have that in our collective consciousness, we can change the world and we can bring peace — not only to the Middle East, but all over the world.”
