A True Mystery OR Hoax?
Is the Mystery Stone a hoax or genuine? Also know as Decalogue Stone and Commandment Rock, it was discovered in 1880. Frank Hibbing, an archeologist, examined the stone in 1933 and is said to think it was authentic.
George E Morehouse estimated the inscription to be anywhere from 500 to 2,000 years old. Others think it’s a hoax.
Apparently the Samaritan Mezuzah writing shows modern Hebrew punctuation and grammatical errors. But to this day, it still remains a mystery.

The Curse of Two Guns Ghost Town and the Apache Death Caves
After several disasters the curse of the ghost town of Two Guns became legendary, and the Apache Death Cave has kept this chilling place on the map.
Beginning of the 19th century, a small trading post was established known as Canyon Lodge. By late 1920s it became a favourite stop for those travelling on the National Trail Highway - later being part of Route 66.
In 1925, an eccentric man known as Harry E Miller (aka Chief Crazy Horse) took out a ten year lease and changed the name to Two Guns. Building a zoo, restaurant, Indian gift shop and two petrol stations, he even began giving tours of the infamous Apache Cave.

A True Montana Ghost Town
The mining town of Coolidge sprang up with the construction of the Elkhart mine and mill in 1914. Originally a tent camp to house the miners and millers, the towns population soon grew to about 350.
With the silver prices dropping in the 1920s and the onset of the Great Depression, the people moved away. With the closure of the Post Office in 1932, Coolidge became a ghost town and like many settlements, became abandoned.

Deserted and Abandoned - Ghost Town or Mining Camp?
This was a Silver and Lead Mine that was worked up until the 1930s, now deserted and abandoned. You tend to wonder what ended up happening to those that worked and lived here. Sometimes they have more exciting stories than the dilapidated ruins they have left behind. Which is the case with the owner of this mine.
Quite the entrepreneur, he sold this mine, started an airport which then became Nellis Air Force Base, and then operated a successful business with his wife for travellers between L.A. and Vegas for many years.

Comet Ghost Town - Hidden in the Hills
There are still several buildings to explore in Comet ghost town, although the main attraction, the mill, can now only be viewed from the road. Hidden in the hills of High Ore Gulch his once thriving mining area, established in 1876, produced silver, gold, copper, zinc and other commodities.

Creepy Abandoned Ranch
We have no background knowledge or history of this abandoned ranch which lies within Public Lands - Bureau of Land Management, (BLM). What we do know is it has a very unsettling feeling. We both felt it! Very strange, as if something bad had happened there. Our positive energy was sucked right out of us, leaving us feeling nervous and apprehensive. This was one explore that we were glad to leave!

The Glass House - Middle of “Nowhere Desert”
There are a lot of discrepancies on line about the Glass House. Why someone would want to build a glass house in the middle of “nowhere desert” beats us. Intriguing all the same, some mysteries may forever elude us.
One reference indicates that it was built in the 1970s and abandoned in the 80s. Another, that it was constructed in 1993/94 by Walt Benson (with the help of one other man). Walt is said to have been an eccentric Californian wine grower/producer, and built the Glass House for his wife.
It has been assembled into the side of the plateau with the doors facing North and South for the beautiful views of the lakes and to get a cross breeze. Plexiglas and metal are the main building materials, and to us, the interior has been designed with 70s style decor.
Sweltering sun in the summer, and frigid temperatures in the winter!

Abandoned Northern State Asylum
Once the largest mentally ill facility in the state of Washington, the now abandonedNorthern State Asylum was established in 1909, opening in 1912 as a self-sustaining and therapeutic colony for the mentally ill. It boasted over 700 acres of farmland for livestock and vegetables with a greenhouse, canning facilities, water reservoir and sewage system. It also included a lumbar mill, quarry and a steam plant.
The dairy barns and milking sheds were built in 1921.
Northern State reached its maximum capacity of 2,700 patients in the 1950s but they were still pressured to taking more people.
1976 saw the closure of the facility due to the state legislature cutting off all funding. Although some of the original building have been repurposed and are used for rehabilitation.
The old cemetery holds at least 1,500 graves, each with just a number.

Haunted Old St James Hospital
Let’s make one thing clear, we are not ghost hunters or paranormal investigators! But when we were asked by Chilling Paranormal to come along for an all night investigating of this magnificent (haunted) abandoned hospital, of course we jumped at the chance. So forgive us for not knowing the correct names of the equipment.
For us, it was a night a fun!
Little is known about the old St James Hospital in Butte, Montana, and we were unable to find any photographs of the interior from its conception. We do know that it was founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kansas and several additions were added throughout the course of the next few decades.
From what we can gather, there were originally two wards. In 1890 the cost of staying in the ward was $10 per week ($300 in todays money). In addition, there were some private rooms - 2 beds were $12 per week and single, private rooms were $15 per week ($450 today).
A school of nursing was opened in1906 and a residential dormitory for students and nurses opened in 1917.
By 1941, there were 18 Sisters and St James was the first hospital in the state of Montana to be standardised and placed on the list of approved hospitals by the American College of Surgeons.
The new St James hospital was built in 1959, but some areas of the old hospital remained in use until 1968 when it closed.
During the 1980s the wards were refurbished into apartments but have long since been abandoned. The new owner is working to rebuild and refurbish the building. In the meantime, tours are offered and “ghost hunts” take place.

Abandoned Military Radar Domes
These abandoned, military radar domes began operations in November 1950. The communications, cryptography and radar station were manned by 5 to 6 army personnel.
An aircraft control and warning squadron apparently could detect any aircraft within 150 mile radius.
What remains of this Washington State Military Base is the motor pool, a gym and theatre, power plant where coal was used to supply steam heat, the barracks ruins and several other buildings.
At its peak, 188 military and 21 civilians were based here. By Aug 1960, only 65 personnel were left. The facility closed later that year and most of the housing was relocated.

Abandoned 1904 Battery
Battery Russell, now abandoned, was built facing the ocean in 1904, a later addition to the 1864 Fort Stevens. The other eight batteries were built along the Columbia River. A team of 35 men manned each of the two 10-inch riffles and a well-trained crew could fire a 617-shell up to 8 miles away, once per minute.
Prior to 1941 and the attack on Pearl Harbour, Battery Russell had only been a practice battery for the 249th Coast Artillery Regiment with the Oregon National Guard. Being about a mile away from the main fort, it only had primitive housing for the gun crews who were rotated in and out every two weeks. This area was known as “Squirrelville”.
In June 1942 nine shells were fired at Fort Stevens by a Japanese sub. Fortunately the shells landed in beach areas and swamp, just missing Battery Russell. Although ready to retaliate, the soldiers were told to hold fire - even though they had located the sub by its gun flashes. It is unclear why no order was given to return fire!
This was the first U.S. mainland military base to be fired upon since 1812.
A more modern Battery 245 replaced Battery Russell, which fired its last shells on December 1944 in a closing ceremony.

Hidden Hot Tubs - Abandoned Green River Gorge Resort
In search of the hidden hot tubs - John Rudge, a Welsh coal miner, along with his wife Mary, purchased 13 acres of land and built the Green River Gorge Resort. The resort opened to the public in 1925 and consisted of the hotel, cabins, the “natural" hot tubs and a nearby gas station named “Jakes Place”.
During the 1970s and 80s it had a reputation as a hippy destination.

NASA Apollo Astronauts Training Area
NASA trained their Apollo astronauts out on the lava fields in 1964, bringing tourism to the forgotten area.
Built along an 1860s wagon road, at an elevation of 5,187 feet, this lookout tower was built by William N Park in 1935. Constructed from lava rocks which flowed from the Yapoah cone which erupted over 2,600 years ago.
The lookout tower was named after Dee Wright. A trail builder, guide and packer for the US Forest Service, who passed away the previous year without seeing its completion.

Shirk Ranch - Abandoned and Forgotten
This abandoned and forgotten property was homesteaded by the Hill family in the early 1800s. In 1893, David L Shirk purchased the property as a horse ranch. Some of the structures have been dated as far back as 1881, but more structures were added.
Shirk was a well known cattleman who had assisted in the first cattle drive from Texas to Oregon in 1869. His ranch hands were treated like family, eating their eying meals in the main house with his wife and four children.
Upstairs, Shirk built a billiard room so his staff could entertain themselves during the winter months and in the evenings.
The property was sold in 1914, but his daughter leased the ranch with her husband when it went into foreclosure from the new owners and continued to live there until 1945 even though it had become part of the Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge in 1943.
Now a part of the Bureau of Land Management, (BLM) the property has been vacant since the 1980s.

The most haunted building in Montana was built in 1890 as a house of ill repute. Originally for the “High Class” Copper Magnets, the ladies would parade in the parlour before being escorted upstairs by their gentleman “friend” who would stay the entire night.
Later, after the money ran out, the parlour became a place to “Window Shop”, while the basement area had tunnels, not only from the mines but also to many other establishments around town.
History suggests that there were many murders and suicides within these walls. Strange noises, voices and unexplained phenomenon has and still occurs in the Dumas Brothel.
A little girl around the age of 10, named Eliza, has made herself known. Apparently she is very proud of her dress with “frillies”.
Did we catch anything??? You’ll need to watch the full video to find out.

Constructed in 1871 by the convicts themselves, this was the first territorial prison in the USA. Trap doors lead to a warren of dark, haunting surveillance tunnels. The chilling black box cells where inmates were locked for up to 10 days. A mattress, wool blanket and a honey bucket were the only items provided! What other secrets does this foreboding prison hold?

Secret Moonshiners Cabin - Hidden in the Woods
Not much is known about this hidden gem - a mysterious cave house nestled in the heart of the wilderness. Built over a century ago, it is believed that it was used as a cold storage facility by pioneering homesteaders. Later, during the prohibition era, it became a secret hideaway for bootleggers making moonshine.

Abandoned Ammunition Plant: Desolate Wasteland, Rust and Ruins
Established in 1942 at a cost of $22.5 million, the Longhorn ammunition plant produced approximately 393 million pounds of TNT during World War II before closing in 1945. In 1952, the complex reopened to produce solid fuel and rocket motors for the army, operating until 1997 when it permanently closed. The massive complex featured 451 buildings, a power grid, and treatment plant. A railroad system was constructed throughout the facility to transport materials and finished products. However, the site has faced contamination issues, rendering large portions inaccessible while cleanup efforts continue.
