Israel wants 1.1 million people from north Gaza to move in next 24 hours, says UN - X23 News
#Gaza #Israel #x22
The Israeli military has told the UN that everyone living north of Wadi Gaza should relocate to southern Gaza in the next 24 hours, says a UN spokesperson.
The UN says this amounts to approximately 1.1 million people - about half the population of the entire Gaza Strip. The affected area includes densely populated Gaza City.
The alert was given just before midnight, Gaza and Jerusalem time (23:00 GMT).
"The United Nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences," the UN said in a statement.
Israel has issued a response to the UN, defending its evacuation order and saying the international body's statement was "shameful".

Armenia votes to join International Criminal Court, angering Russia I X23 News
#NagornoKarabakh #Armenia #ICC
Armenia's parliament has voted to join the International Criminal Court. Yerevan is seeking security and legal guarantees in the aftermath of its latest conflict with Azerbaijan. But Armenia's desire to join the ICC has angered its strategic ally Russia. The court has issued an arrest warrant for President Putin - and Armenia would be legally obligated to arrest him if he enters the country. The Kremlin had warned Yerevan of serious consequences if it joins the Hague-based court.
This move comes as a United Nations team has just visited the contested enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. The team said it hasn't seen evidence of damage to civilian infrastructure, or to cultural and religious sites. Most of Nagorno-Karabakh's roughly 120,000 residents have fled after a lightning military operation in which Azerbaijan took control of the disputed region. The enclave lies within Azerbaijan's internationally recognised borders, but was until recently controlled by Armenian separatists. Baku has called on ethnic Armenian residents to stay. But Armenia accused Azerbaijan of ethnically cleansing and sparking a mass exodus that has caused a refugee crisis in Armenia.

Report- India tells Canada to withdraw dozens of diplomats I X23 News
#India #Canada #Diplomats
India is demanding the withdrawal of over 40 Canadian diplomats, according to a report from the Financial Times. The report also says Delhi is threatening to revoke diplomatic immunity for any Canadian staffers who fail to leave the country by October 10th. Ties between the two nations have fallen apart over the murder of Sikh separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen the Indian government calls a terrorist.
Earlier this month Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau angered Delhi by publicly accusing Indian government agents for the killing. Nijjar was shot dead by masked gunmen outside a Sikh temple near Vancouver in June. Delhi denied any involvement, dismissing Canada's allegations as ridiculous.
India had earlier retaliated by issuing a travel warning for what it calls "growing anti-India activities in Canada." It also stopped issuing visas to Canadian citizens. This latest expulsion of more than 40 diplomats would be a major escalation in the standoff.
Many in Canada's large Sikh community have voiced support for Trudeau taking a tough stance against India. But with the anger, are also fears over safety. More Sikhs live in Canada than anywhere in the world outside the northern Indian state of Punjab. 770-thousand strong, a small handful of the community supports a movement for an independent state of Khalistan, carved out from India.
The vast majority of the diaspora rejects the movement. The diplomatic fallout has many Canadians Sikhs far more worried about the impact it will have for them in Canada.
And over in South Asia, the same goes. Sikhs in Punjab are likewise worried about the effect this will have on them, as DW's Adil Bhat reports.

Why the floods in Libya were so destructive and deadly - X23 News
#Libya #ClimateChange #Floods
Libya is struggling to deal with the thousands of bodies being recovered in the aftermath of devastating floods. Overwhelmed officials have registered nearly 4,000 - a number that is expected to rise as more bodies are found.
Corpses are washing up on the coast after being swept out to sea when torrential rains caused two dams to burst, causing flash floods that destroyed large parts of the city of Derna. The World Health Organization has urged Libyan authorities to stop burying victims in mass graves, to avert future legal and emotional problems.
Meanwhile, the Red Cross is warning that the floods may have uprooted landmines and explosives left over from the country's years of conflict. Despite the many dangers, helpers are scouring the wreckage.

Libya's Red Crescent says more than 11,000 people are now known to have died in floods in the city of Derna. Large parts of the coastal city were swept away after torrential rain caused two dams to burst. The UN said many of the deaths could have been avoided if Libya had a functioning weather agency. There are concerns about disease spreading, with many bodies still lying in the ruins. Some aid and foreign rescue teams have arrived in Libya, but with the country divided and roads washed away, international help is struggling to reach those in need.

He also suggested Musk ask China to make his company, X available in the country, where it is currently banned. Previously Elon Musk stated, that
"their [Beijing's] policy has been to reunite Taiwan with China. From their standpoint, maybe it is analogous to Hawaii or something like that, like an integral part of China that is arbitrarily not part of China mostly because ... the U.S. Pacific Fleet has stopped any sort of reunification effort by force"

North Korea unveils its first tactical nuclear attack submarine - X23 News
#NorthKorea #Submarine
North Korea has launched its first "tactical nuclear attack submarine" as part of its effort to strengthen its naval force, the state news agency KCNA announced on Friday. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended the submarine-launching ceremony on Wednesday, according to KCNA. During the festive ceremony that involved confetti and balloons, he stressed "the strategic and tactical plan to continuously enhance the modernity of underwater and surface forces and push forward with the nuclear weaponization of the Navy in the future." On Thursday, Kim inspected the submarine as it was preparing for a test cruise.
What we know about North Korea's new submarine
Submarine No. 841 is named Hero Kim Kun Ok after a North Korean historical figure. According to Kim, it will carry out its combat mission as "one of core underwater offensive means of the naval force" of North Korea. The submarine was assigned to the fleet patrolling the waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan, state media said. It was not immediately clear what missiles the new submarine would be armed with. North Korea has test-fired several long-range submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), as well as short-range SLBMs and cruise missiles that can be fired from submarines. North Korea has a large submarine fleet but only the experimental ballistic missile submarine 8.24 Yongung (August 24th Hero) is known to have launched a missile.
What South Korea said about the submarine
The South Korean military said they believe the submarine was launched from within the Sinpo shipyard in southern North Korea. Kim Inae, a spokesperson at Seoul's Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean affairs, said that North Korea's move was "deplorable." She expressed her dismay at Kim Jong Un channeling his limited resources into developing weapons while ignoring the state of his impoverished people. When asked if Russia may have assisted North Korea on its new submarine, the spokesperson did not provide a specific answer.

Faces of colonialism- the story of an imperialist propaganda - X23 Documentary
#documentary #x23documentary
For a long time, photographer Robert Lohmeyer shaped the European view of Africa. During his travels, from 1907 to 1909, he photographed the German colonies -- in color, for the first time. In doing so, he laid the photographic foundations of racism.
The young photographer‘s trip to the German colonies of Togo, Cameroon, German Southwest Africa (now Namibia) and German East Africa (now Tanzania) was taken at the height of German imperialism. In his photographs of his travels, Robert Lohmeyer generated enthusiasm for these distant lands that Germany considered its possessions.
Making use of the most up-to-date photographic equipment at the time, Lohmeyer’s project was a meticulously planned PR campaign. Its goal? A celebration of colonialism and empire.
Lohmeyer’s resulting photography books were seen by huge numbers of people. Even today, the pictures are still in circulation. Lohmeyer's photos convey the image of a "peaceful savage" in a paradisiacal landscape. A colonial idyll. Because the images are in color, they evoke a feeling of authenticity and truthfulness. War, disease, hunger and death do not appear in Lohmeyer's pictures.
Based on unpublished written sources and photographs, the documentary follows Lohmeyer's journey. It tells the story of a chapter in the history of photography. But it also tells the story of a propaganda coup. Finally, the film explores Lohmeyer’s contribution to a new kind of racism -- in color - the effects of which can still be felt today.

Nearly everyone in Europe is breathing polluted air – with deadly consequences - X23 News
#climatechange #europe #pollution
Virtually everyone in Europe lives in polluted towns and cities where annual average levels of fine particulate matter are higher than the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommended limit.
In practical terms, this means that almost everyone on the continent is breathing bad air that has been shown to be fatal.
Air pollution increases the risk of respiratory and heart disease and lowers life expectancy.
"With the current levels of air pollution, many people [are getting] sick. We know that lowering air pollution levels reduces these numbers," said Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, director of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal).
