NASA's SpaceX Crew-6 Flight Day 3 Highlights - September 4, 2023
NASA astronauts Steve Bowen and Woody Hoburg as well as UAE (United Arab Emirates) astronaut Sultan Alneyadi and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev began their journey back to Earth from the International Space Station on Sunday, September 3, by closing the hatch to the SpaceX Dragon, named Endeavour, followed by undocking. After nearly 16 hours of transit, Bowen, Hoburg, Alneyadi, and Fedyaev returned to Earth with a parachute-assisted splashdown off the coast of Florida on Monday, September 4. NASA’s SpaceX Crew-6 completed an approximately six-month mission living and working aboard the microgravity laboratory to advance scientific knowledge and demonstrate new technologies for future human and robotic exploration flights that pave the way for NASA’s Artemis program.

Gateway's Polar Orbit by NASA
NASA ID: NRHO visualization with low-lunar orbit
This animation shows the Gateway space station's polar orbit, a unique, highly elongated near-rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO) represented by the blue line that steadily covers every part of the Moon, permitting access to the entire surface. A precisely polar low lunar orbit is represented by the orange line for reference.

One Month From Launch: Psyche Mission to a Metal Asteroid (Live Briefing)
NASA ID: JPL-20230906-PSYCHEf-0002-Psyche L30 UHD
Scheduled to launch on Oct. 5, 2023, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Psyche mission is a journey to a metal asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. What makes the asteroid Psyche unique is that it may be the partial core of a planetesimal (one of the building blocks of a rocky planet) or could be primordial material that never melted. The mission aims to help answer fundamental questions about Earth’s own metal core and the formation of our solar system. The spacecraft also will carry NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC), a technology demonstration that aims to show how lasers could increase data transmission rates far beyond the capacity of current radio frequency systems used on spacecraft today. Tune in as we hear from experts behind the mission. JPL Director Laurie Leshin will provide opening remarks, and briefing participants

What's Up: September 2023 Skywatching Tips from NASA
Venus returns to the early morning skies as a bright beacon in the east. The full moon at the end of the month is known as the Harvest Moon. And if you have access to dark skies away from urban light pollution, you might be able to glimpse the faint, glowing pillar of the zodiacal light.
Additional information about topics covered in this episode of What's Up, along with still images from the video, and the video transcript, are available at https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/skywatching/home.

New discoveries by NASA in space
Crew-7’s pilot is Andreas Mogensen, the Copenhagen, Denmark native who was selected as an ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut in 2009 and became the first Danish citizen in space after launching aboard a Soyuz for a 10-day mission to the space station in 2015. He completed undergraduate studies and received a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College London in England before gaining his doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Mogensen has since served as a crew member for NEEMO (NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations) missions and was the European astronaut liaison officer to NASA's Johnson Space Center from 2016-2022

A Quick Look at Supernova 1987A
On February 24, 1987, astronomers in the southern hemisphere saw a supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
This new object was dubbed “Supernova 1987A” and was the brightest stellar explosion seen in over four centuries.
Chandra has observed Supernova 1987A many times and the X-ray data reveal important information about this object.
X-rays from Chandra have shown the expanding blast wave from the original explosion slamming into a ring of material expelled by the star before it exploded.
The latest Chandra data reveal the blast wave has moved beyond the ring into a region that astronomers do not know much about.
These observations can help astronomers learn how supernovas impact their environments and affect future generations of stars and planets.

Europa Clipper Spacecraft Assembly Media Reel NASA
B-roll for media and public use. NASA’s Europa Clipper mission, scheduled to launch in October 2024, will conduct a detailed survey of Jupiter’s moon Europa to determine whether the icy moon could harbor conditions suitable for life. This reel includes clips showing the assembly and integration of various parts of the spacecraft within a clean room at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The spacecraft, in orbit around Jupiter, will perform dozens of close flybys of Europa, soaring over a different location with each pass so that it eventually scans nearly the entire moon.
Europa Clipper will launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

NASA's Psyche DAPM Deployment and Stow for Launch
A team of engineers and technicians worked on deploying and stowing stationary plasma thrusters (SPT) on NASA's Psyche spacecraft inside the Astrotech Space Operations Facility near the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Aug. 4, 2023. This is part of the assembly, test, and launch operations preparations. The SPT are on a dual axis positioning mechanism, the DAPM, and together they make a DSM, or DAPM-Actuated SPT Module. Psyche will launch atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy. Launch is targeted for Oct. 5, 2023. Riding with Psyche is a pioneering technology demonstration, NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment.
