Spacewalk with Astronauts Steve Bowen and Woody Hoburg (June 9, 2023) (Official NASA Broadcast) NASA astronauts Steve Bowen and Warren "Woody" Hoburg are taking a spacewalk on Friday, June 9, to add a new unrolling solar panel to the International Space Station. Bowen and Hoburg are scheduled to install an International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Array, or IROSA, on today's spacewalk, with a second one to be installed on June 15. The new arrays will increase the power capacity of the orbiting laboratory. The spacewalk, known formally as U.S. EVA 87, is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. EDT (1315 UTC) and last about six and a half hours. Bowen will wear a suit with red stripes and Hoburg will wear an unmarked suit. This is Bowen's ninth spacewalk and the first for Hoburg. Spacewalk with Astronauts Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O'Hara: Nov. 1, 2023 (Official NASA Broadcast) NASA astronauts Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O'Hara are taking a spacewalk outside the International Space Station on Wednesday, Nov. 1, to remove electronics gear and replace hardware supporting the station's solar arrays. The spacewalk is expected to begin at approximately 8:05 a.m. EDT (1205 UTC) and last for around six and a half hours. Moghbeli (wearing the suit with red stripes) and O'Hara (wearing the unmarked suit) arrived at the ISS earlier this year and are both crew members of Expedition 70, which began on Sept. 27, 2023. This is the first spacewalk for both astronauts. Farther and Faster: NASA's Journey to the Moon with Artemis. At 1:47 a.m. EST (6:47 UTC) on Nov. 16, 2022, NASA’s Orion spacecraft launched atop the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket from historic Launch Pad 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on a path to the Moon, officially beginning the Artemis I mission. Over the course of 25.5 days, Orion performed two lunar flybys, coming within 80 miles (129 kilometers) of the lunar surface. At its farthest distance during the mission, Orion traveled nearly 270,000 miles (435,000 kilometers) from our home planet. On Dec. 11, 2022, NASA’s Orion spacecraft successfully completed a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean at 9:40 a.m. PST (12:40 p.m. EST) as the final major milestone of the Artemis I mission. Artemis I set new performance records, exceeded efficiency expectations, and established new safety baselines for humans in deep space. This is a prelude to what comes next—following the success of Artemis I, human beings will fly around the Moon on Artemis II. OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Sample Return (Official 4K NASA Broadcast).. Watch a spacecraft deliver an asteroid sample to Earth! Our OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer) spacecraft is approaching Earth, and on Sept. 24, 2023, it will release its sample return capsule into the atmosphere on a path to land at the Department of Defense’s Utah Test and Training Range. The touchdown will mark the end of a seven-year journey to explore asteroid Bennu, collect a sample from its surface, and deliver it to Earth as the U.S’s first pristine asteroid sample. Testing Mars Sample Return. Teams across multiple NASA centers and the European Space Agency are working together to prepare a set of missions that would return the samples being collected by the Mars Perseverance rover safely back to Earth. From landing on the Red Planet and collecting the samples to launching them off the surface of Mars for their potential return to Earth, groundbreaking technologies and methods are being developed and tested.This video features some of that prototype testing underway for the proposed Sample Retrieval Lander, Mars Ascent Vehicle launch systems, and the Earth Entry System. Mars Sample Return: Bringing Mars Rock Samples Back to Earth. NASA and the European Space Agency are developing plans for one of the most ambitious campaigns ever attempted in space: bringing the first samples of Mars material safely back to Earth for detailed study. The diverse set of scientifically curated samples now being collected by NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover could help scientists answer the question of whether ancient life ever arose on the Red Planet. Bringing samples of Mars to Earth for future study would happen in several steps with multiple spacecraft, and in some ways, in a synchronized manner. This short animation features key moments of the Mars Sample Return campaign: from landing on Mars and securing the sample tubes to launching them off the surface and ferrying them back to Earth. Animation is contributed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the European Space Agency, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Marshall Space Flight Center.

OSIRIS-REx is NASA’s first asteroid sample return mission. It launched in September 2016 on a journey to explore a near-Earth asteroid called Bennu. In October 2020, the spacecraft ventured to the asteroid’s surface and collected about 250 grams of material for delivery to Earth. Now, two years and four months after leaving Bennu, OSIRIS-REx is closing in on the place where its journey began. The mission’s thrilling finale will take place on September 24, 2023, as a capsule containing the Bennu samples touches down in Utah’s West Desert. NASA’s Artemis I Mission Return Trip Lunar Flyby. On Dec. 5, NASA will air the lunar flyby of the Orion spacecraft on its return trek toward Earth. Orion completed a burn Dec. 1 to exit a lunar orbit thousands of miles beyond the Moon, where engineers have been testing systems to improve understanding of the spacecraft before future missions with astronauts. The return powered flyby burn, in which the spacecraft will harness the Moon’s gravity and accelerate back toward Earth, is expected at 11:43 a.m. (1643 UTC) The spacecraft is expected to fly about 79 miles above the lunar surface at 11:42 a.m. (16:42 UTC) just before the burn. Orion launched aboard the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket at 1:47 am EST (0647 UTC) on Nov. 16 from historic Launch Complex 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Orion entered a distant retrograde orbit on at 4:52 p.m. EST (2152 UTC) on Nov. 25, where the spacecraft has been testing systems in a deep space environment. The Artemis I mission is the first integrated test of NASA’s deep space exploration systems: the Orion spacecraft, the SLS rocket, and Kennedy Space Center ground systems.
