Where Are the Moon Rocks_ We Asked a NASA Expert
Present within the lunar curation facility, we house the lunar rock repository. Anticipation runs high for the impending Artemis missions, poised to revisit the Moon's South Pole. This time, an array of diverse samples will accompany our return.
Examining lunar rocks holds paramount significance. Not only does it unlock lunar and terrestrial insights, delving into their shared 4.5-billion-year genesis, but it also unveils revelations about the solar system and its constituent planets.
Within this meticulously maintained environment, characterized by its sterility, air is meticulously filtered, and specialized attire is mandatory. Lunar specimens repose in nitrogen-laden cabinets, an approach aimed at shielding them from terrestrial moisture, atmosphere, and potential contaminants.
Analyzing the Apollo-derived lunar rocks on-site aids in deciphering what lies ahead and the requisite instruments needed. This empowers us to amass additional lunar samples, paving the way for the forthcoming cohort of lunar scientists to conduct their explorations.
