What would happen if Israel assumed 'security responsibility' in Gaza?
Israel's military and its prime minister both said on Tuesday that its forces were "operating inside" Gaza City, with Benjamin Netanyahu saying the city was "encircled." Netanyahu again said a cease-fire or a resumption of fuel deliveries was out of the question unless Hamas released its remaining hostages. He repeated his call for civilians to flee south in Gaza to avoid the fighting. Netanyahu has also hinted at his plans for Gaza once the fighting is over. In an interview with US broadcaster ABC News, he said that Israel would control security in the Gaza Strip — after destroying the Islamist militant group Hamas. But what exactly would this mean for Gaza and the people living there?

ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. In Gaza itself, the situation is growing increasingly desperate at hospitals in the north of the Strip, surrounded by fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas - which many countries have designated a terrorist group
Operations have been suspended at Al-Shifa Hospital after fuel ran out. Palestinian officials say a premature baby and four other patients died after the last generator powering incubators and ventilators shut down.
Troops and tanks are also reported to have taken up positions near the Nasr and Rantisi children's hospitals, and the Indonesian and Al-Quds hospitals - which have come under fire, despite the thousands of civilians sheltering there.
Kiran Moodley has this report, some of which you might find distressing.

US and France join calls for Israel to cease civilian bombings
Israel is facing increasing pressure to protect civilians in Gaza as the United States and France join international calls to stop the bloodshed.
Hospitals have become the latest battlefields with various facilities in the north now surrounded by Israeli tanks and troops.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk says even if civilians are being used by Hamas as human shields, it doesn’t absolve Israel’s responsibility to spare them.
“We have very serious concerns that these amount to disproportionate attacks in breach of international humanitarian law,” Mr Turk said.
The White House announced Israel will begin to implement daily, four-hour humanitarian pauses but there is yet to be a lull in fighting.
