BUNHAE JOURNEY episode 8
In martial arts we tend to become overly concerned with what makes each style different... in reality we are more alike than we are different...
For the last number of years, I've been on a search to find the practical application of Traditional Martial Arts forms... My upbringing in Tang Soo Do, and the dissection of the core material (Bunkai/Bunhae) has been a springboard to understanding my current system of Pilsung Moo Do.
BUNHAE is Korean meaning to dissect, break apart and analyze. The more common term is Bunkai in Japanese.
The study of Bunhae is paramount to fully understanding and learning to apply the movements found in traditional martial arts.
This series is a journey of discovery as we try to unlock practical application for the movements found in the Traditional Martial Arts for the purpose of self-protection.
Michael Celona is a currently a 6th Degree Black Belt and Master Instructor. Founder of Revolution Martial Arts Institute (RMAI) in Swarthmore, PA.
The style practiced at RMAI is known as Pilsung Moo Do is a modern martial art which draws its influence mainly from it's root styles of Tang Soo Do and Taekwondo, but also incorporates joint locking, throwing, and grappling from Hapkido and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Pilsung Moo Do is roughly translated in Korean as "The Martial Art/Way of Certain Victory"
Master Celona also currently holds the rank of Blue Belt in BJJ

Forms Based Pad Drill (with Bunhae) part 4
This is a four part series to explore possible meanings from a common sequence found in forms, specifically PMAA forms Pilsung Sa Jang and Pilsung Oh Jang... I intentionally left out footage from the solo version of the form so that people can see the pad drill for itself without having any preconceived notions on interpretation of the meaning of the movement.

Training Tips 0034 Jaseh/Tora Drill COMBINED Stance
In this drill we combined our previous movement drills into one, that will use all three of the main stances in Korean martial arts (Front, Fighting, and Horseback stance) with a focus on transitioning from one stance to a different stance, and the details regarding weight distribution.
This exercise will help in the performance of line-drills when moving up and down the floor, as well as forms sequences

PMAA One Steps with finish Hands 10
We wanted to experiment with adding things to our standard one-step sparring techniques. Whether or not you enjoy practicing one-steps or even see it as practical from a self-defense perspective. Adding on 'finishing techniques' to what we call Il Soo Sik Dae Ryun, certainly made them more interesting and forced us to think about what can be 'next'.

BUNHAE JOURNEY episode 7
BUNHAE JOURNEY EPISODE 7: Ranges of Fighting
We discuss different ranges of fighting as it relates to self-defense. For me, I like to think of 4 different ranges, others may have more or less, I think there are a number of differing factors which determine what your specific ranges of fighting are, namely body type, and skillset.
For the last number of years, I've been on a search to find the practical application of Traditional Martial Arts forms... My upbringing in Tang Soo Do, and the dissection of the core material (Bunkai/Bunhae) has been a springboard to understanding my current system of Pilsung Moo Do.
