Explosion likely brought down aircraft purportedly carrying Wagner boss, flight data and video analysis suggest By Eliza Mackintosh, Gianluca Mezzofiore, Benjamin There is a puff of white and then a plane can be seen falling, a trail of smoke or vapor stretching behind it, descending rapidly against a bright blue sky. The person filming the video zooms in as the aircraft spirals downwards out of control, revealing that it is missing a wing. The footage, published by Russian state media outlet RIA Novosti, appears to show the moments before a private plane purportedly carrying mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin crashed in a field northwest of Moscow, while en route to St. Petersburg. CNN has reviewed flight data and videos, and interviewed aviation and explosive experts, to piece together what happened in the minutes leading up to the crash. The analysis suggests that the private aircraft experienced at least one “catastrophic inflight incident” before it dropped out of the sky. Available video does not show that catastrophic event. A passenger manifest released by Russia’s civil aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, on Wednesday showed that Prigozhin’s name and that of Wagner’s top commander, Dmitry Utkin, were among the seven passengers and three crew members, all of whom Russia’s emergency services ministry said were killed. Russian authorities have yet to officially confirm Prigozhin’s death but, acknowledging the crash in public comments on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to him in the past tense. Rosaviatsia said it had launched an investigation into “the circumstances and causes of the accident.” The Investigative Committee has also launched a criminal probe. The crash came two months to the day after Prigozhin launched a short-lived mutiny against Russia’s military leadership, posing an unprecedented challenge to Putin’s authority. The Pentagon said on Thursday that Prigozhin was “likely” killed in the crash. US and western intelligence officials that CNN has spoken to believe it was deliberate. Officials said that it was too early to determine what brought the plane down, but that one possibility being explored was an on-board explosion. There’s been plenty of speculation. But no evidence has been presented pointing to the involvement of the Kremlin or Russian security services in the crash. Experts interviewed by CNN say that available evidence indicates that the crash was unlikely to have been caused by a mechanical failure. The dramatic descent of the plane, the way that it broke apart in the air and the extent of the debris field point to an explosion, they said. Flight data shows a ‘dramatic descent’ The private Embraer Legacy 600 (RA-02795) linked to Prigozhin, which took off from Moscow shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, showed no sign of any problems before a precipitous drop, flight-tracking data shows. Flightradar24, a site that tracks real-time aircraft information, said in a report on Wednesday that the plane reached a cruising altitude of 28,000 feet at 6:11 p.m. Moscow time, moving at a speed of 590 miles per hour. Then, at 6:19 p.m. local time, the plane made erratic climbs and descents, at one point soaring to over 30,000 feet before suddenly falling 8,000 feet in about 30 seconds. When the plane transmitted the last data, it had fallen to an altitude of 19,725 feet. According to CNN’s analysis of available flight data, the plane traveled another 30 miles before it crashed. “Even though the aircraft was not transmitting position information, other data like altitude, speed, vertical rate, and autopilot settings were broadcast. It is this data that provides some insight into the final moments of the flight,” Flightradar24 said in the report, noting that the data showed a “dramatic descent.” The flight’s final fluctuations in altitude are highly unusual, one aviation expert told CNN, and suggest that the pilot was trying to stabilize the plane before the crash. “Explosive decompression, like if a door blew off or if they had the explosion underneath a wheeled carriage … They would need to be able to keep control of the plane sufficiently to keep that altitude and not just drop like a stone,” said Steffan Watkins, an open-source research consultant who tracks aircraft and ships. The ill-fated luxury jet was identified by Flightradar24 with registration RA-02795, the same plane previously believed to have carried Prigozhin to Belarus after a deal brokered to end the mutiny required the Wagner chief and his fighters to relocate to the country. Over the last two months, Russia observers and aviation experts have tracked the Embraer jet flying back and forth between Russia and Belarus, often turning off its transponder to obscure its location. CNN has previously reported that US and European intelligence officials had been tracking the plane’s movements but could not say for sure at the time whether Prigozhin was on board. “He uses it as a deception tactic,” a US official told CNN then about why Prigozhin’s exact whereabouts were hard to track by plane. Experts say videos point to explosion midair Two videos, geolocated by CNN near the crash site, show the plane, with a distinctive blue tail, dropping out of the sky. Its fuselage – the aircraft’s main body section – appears to be in one piece, but it is missing a wing. Footage from the crash site, shared on Telegram by an activist monitoring group, the Belarusian Hajun Project, showed the plane’s fuselage. In the clip, the last four digits of the plane’s registration number can be seen on what remained of the engine, as the wreckage burned: 2795. Other videos and photos shared on Telegram, a messaging app, show debris from the plane scattered in four locations across a roughly 2-mile radius just outside the village of Kuzhenkino, in the Tver region. The aircraft’s fuselage was found in a field, its tail section discovered nearby. Some smaller debris landed in a residential area, and the wing was found in a river, according to CNN’s analysis of the visual evidence and Planet Labs satellite imagery. Markus Schiller, a Europe-based missile expert who has worked on analysis for NATO and the European Union, told CNN that the available videos and the fact that multiple debris fields were spread over a wide area point to a “forceful explosion.” “The plane’s tail and wing can only have been separated from the plane by an explosion. It remains unclear whether this was a bomb on the plane or a missile, but the tail and wing can’t have fallen off any other way,” Schiller said. CNN could not confirm how the plane was downed, but Schiller and several other experts suggested that the crash was caused by at least one cataclysmic event that occurred midair. Robert Schmucker, a rocket expert who advises NATO and the United Nations, said that while the crash requires a thorough, on-the-ground investigation and analysis of the black box, or flight data recorders, to determine the cause, available evidence indicates that the plane was likely downed by an explosion rather than mechanical failure. “Planes such as this one don’t just fall out of the sky. Neither bad servicing nor pilot error would have the effect we’ve seen, namely the wing falling off and there appearing to be an explosion in the sky. This plane definitely didn’t fall apart due to mechanical or weather issues,” Schmucker told CNN. He added that, based on the footage and appearance of the debris, it didn’t appear that the plane was hit by a rocket or air defense missile. The Embraer Legacy 600 model that crashed had, as of 2021, only recorded one accident in over two decades of service, and it was not a result of mechanical failure, according to the website International Aviation HQ. Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer said in a statement to CNN that it has complied with international sanctions imposed on Russia, and suspended its support service, which includes maintenance, to the aircraft linked to Yevgeny Prigozhin in 2019. Several residents who lived near the crash site described hearing explosions before seeing the plane plummet to the ground. A woman from Kuzhenkino told RIA Novosti that she heard an airplane near her house, which is located about 1,000 feet from the place where the tail part of the Embraer is now lying. “Then came something like a bang, like a shot. Then suddenly an explosion, I look up and heard a sound above me - it was like pops, like several explosions,” she said. “The plane started to swerve. Then a plume of smoke emerged, and the plane began to descend, to dive.” Given the safety record of the modern Embraer Legacy 600 aircraft, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum, an aviation expert, and professor at the University of North Dakota, said that there were only three realistic options for how the crash occurred: an explosive device on the plane, a missile, or an in-air collision. But he indicated that the latter two were less likely, given the degree of damage that you would expect to see from a missile impact, and that air traffic control would have likely picked up a collision on its radar, unless it was with a drone. “It is very difficult to understand what happened without a proper investigation,” he said, adding: “The aircraft has suffered serious catastrophic inflight break up.”

On Saturday, one station in the west side of the city got two shipments of sand, but it went out as fast as it came in, according to Los Angeles County Fire captain Jesse Vasquez. “We're bombarded,” Vasquez told USA TODAY.” It was nonstop. We got depleted.” Forecast developments: ∎ Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts of 10 inches, were expected across portions of southern California and southern Nevada, where flooding could be most severe. ∎ California Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency, and authorities issued an evacuation advisory for Santa Catalina Island, 23 miles off the coast. ∎ As the storm rolls north, portions of Oregon and Idaho could see as much as 3 to 5 inches of rain, producing some "significant" flash flooding, the weather service said. Sandbags hard to find as storm approaches Vasquez said many people who picked up sandbags from the stations were panicking, taking more than they could possibly need. “We can't go out there and argue with them,” he said. “We can educate and ask and plead with them. But at that point, they're gonna do whatever they want to do.” Fire stations were getting over 300 calls Saturday asking where to get sand, and instead were giving people tips on how to prepare for any dangerous weather, such as boarding up houses and covering any possible cracks or holes. The demand for sand has been so high, Vasquez said, some residents told him they were driving to beaches to fill up bags. All fire stations – operated by Los Angeles County – will be fully staffed with more equipment than normal in the city Sunday, Vasquez said, but they know depending on the intensity of the weather, it might be a difficult task to come to the aid of residents as they try to evacuate anyone severely impacted. In a city with so many hills, mudslides will also be something firefighters have to consider possibly occurring. “The department is prepared. We have the manpower and staff, but we're just sitting there, waiting for it, to see what happens," he said. “We do our best to protect life and property. That's our main objective.” Fire officials aren’t sure if they will get another delivery of sand from the city on Sunday morning, when the storm is expected to arrive in the area. Officials in nearby Pomona said the city ran out of sandbags Saturday night but is expecting to get more Sunday morning. Palm Springs braces for flooding Farther inland in Riverside California, weather service meteorologist Elizabeth Adams said rain could fall up to 3 inches an hour Sunday near Palm Springs across the desert and mountains surrounding the Coachella Valley. The intense rainfall during those hours could cause widespread and life-threatening flash floods, Adams said. National Weather Service placed the Coachella Valley under a tropical storm warning, emphasizing the potential for high winds and extreme flooding rain that “may prompt numerous evacuations and rescues.” Palm Springs Fire Chief Paul Alvarado urged residents not to ignore barricades and other warnings on local roads. "Local responders use them to safely direct traffic out of flooded areas,” Alvarado said. “We want to avoid swift water rescues, which put the lives of both drivers and public safety at risk.” Historic 'heat dome' poised to sweep nation Meteorologist Ryan Maue said a "historic, climate-induced heat dome will absolutely demolish records" in coming days, peaking Thursday when 67 million Americans are forecast to see at least 100°F. Against the odds and amid a backdrop of turmoil, Spain reached the pinnacle in Sydney on Sunday, deservedly beating England 1-0 to win the Women’s World Cup for the first time. That Spain had progressed to the final, given the tumultuous year the national team had experienced, was remarkable. That La Roja triumphed against the reigning European champion and pre-match favorite in spite of the disputes and divisions which has clouded the national team throughout the tournament makes this achievement extraordinary. Olga Carmona’s wonderful 29th-minute strike proved to be the winner. Spain could even afford to miss a second-half penalty as La Roja became only the second country, after Germany, to win both the men’s and women’s World Cups. As Spain’s players celebrated by forming a joyful heap of red on the Stadium Australia pitch, many of England’s players were in tears as hopes of becoming the country’s first senior soccer world champion since 1966 were ended by a brilliant Spain. For possession and attempts on goal, there was only one team in it – Spain outplayed England. But there is some solace for England which, like Spain, was competing in a Women’s World Cup final for the first time, because the team has progressed further than ever before in this competition. But it is Spain’s future which shines the brightest, especially if off-pitch issues can be resolved, because now, incredibly, the Iberian nation is a World Cup winner at Under-17, Under-20 and senior level. As fireworks lit up the night sky and a wave of golden ticker-tape showered the victorious players during the trophy presentation, thoughts wondered to those Spanish players who had missed out on an opportunity to win the sport’s biggest prize because of the dispute between the players, the coaching staff and the country’s soccer federation. Division and uncertainty Last September, 15 Spanish players declared themselves unavailable for selection, saying they were unhappy with the training methods of head coach Jorge Vilda, who described the situation at the time as a “world embarrassment.” When asked in the build-up to the final what it was like to face a dressing room that questioned the worth of the coach and staff, Vilda told the Spanish newspaper Marca that there was no choice but to “focus” on work. Only three of those 15 players who had written letters to the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) last year, saying the “situation” within the national team was affecting their “emotional state” and health, were selected for the World Cup squad. One was Aitana Bonmati, the midfielder who excelled against England and who won the Golden Ball, given to the best player of the tournament. The Barcelona player was peerless and epitomized Spain’s supremacy and also the talent at the country’s disposal. This is a transformative win for women’s soccer in the country, but perhaps not a unifying one. However, it says much for the pool of talent at Spain’s disposal that it was able to succeed in such circumstances. Spain has become a world champion without some of its best players, talents who are the finest in the world in their respective positions. In its three previous World Cup tournaments, Spain had never progressed beyond the round of 16. Giants strides have certainly been made, the country is now the best in the world, but the future, especially of those exiled players, is as unclear as it is bright. The best team wins This was a final between two of the best teams in the tournament, which made for an intriguing and entertaining encounter. As expected, Spain monopolized the ball – enjoying over 50% of possession in the first half – and La Roja’s technical superiority allowed them to pass the ball around the pitch with finesse, their one-touch football putting the Lionesses on their heels. Salma Paralluelo, the 19-year-old who came off the bench to play an instrumental role in the semifinal win against Sweden, started the match and justified her selection as she proved to be an ever-present danger in attack. It took only 15 minutes for the match to burst into life, Lauren Hemp hitting the crossbar with a curling shot from just inside the edge of the box. Almost immediately afterwards, a fine save from England goalkeeper Mary Earps kept out Alba Redondo’s effort but, in truth, the Spaniard should have done better from close range. In the 29th minute came the opening goal, Carmona lazering her shot into the bottom corner after beautiful build-up play down Spain’s left flank. Lucy Bronze’s charge upfield had left a gaping hole in England’s defense and Spain capitalized. Irene Paredes should have doubled Spain’s advantage, while Paralluelo’s first-time shot kissed the post just before the break. Spain was in the ascendancy and continued to dominated after the break. It seemed as victory would be sealed in the 68th minute when Jennifer Hermoso stepped up to take a penalty after Keira Walsh had been penalized for handball. But a fabulous save from Earps, who dove low to her left to keep out Hermoso’s effort, ensured England stayed in the match. Buoyed, England enjoyed its best period of the match. Substitute Lauren James forced Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll into action, but for all of the increase in energy England could not puncture La Roja’s defense and it was the eventual winner which finished the match the stronger. B.C. declares state of emergency amid ‘worst wildfire season in our province’s history’ British Columbia Premier David Eby declared a state of provincial emergency Friday evening, amid a rapidly escalating wildfire crisis. “We are facing the worst wildfire season in our province’s history — this unprecedented situation has come to a head this evening,” Eby said. “In the last 24 hours the situation has evolved and deteriorated quite rapidly. In just the last hour, we’ve gone from about 4,500 homes under evacuation to about 15,000 (people) being evacuated from their homes across the province.” Time-lapse of the McDougall Creek wildfire burning in West Kelowna Eby said the emergency declaration was being implemented “to ensure we have rapid access to any tools we may need to respond to this situation.” Story continues below advertisement Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Minister Bowinn Ma repeated a call she’d made earlier in the day, urging people to avoid all non-essential travel to fire-affected areas in the Central Interior and the province’s southeast. Ma said the growing number of evacuees, coupled with the number of emergency workers flooding the fire zones, meant there was a critical shortage of accommodations. “We are strongly recommending that people with plans to travel to fire-affected areas throughout the central interior and southeast in the coming days to cancel those plans, we need tourists and travellers to take the situation as seriously as the residents of these areas do,” Ma said. “By declaring a state of provincial emergency we are able to enact extraordinary powers that among other tools could include legally enforceable orders that restrict travel to specific areas if people do not adhere to our calls to avoid non-essential travel to the central interior and southeast.” Late Friday, federal Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan posted to social media, saying he had spoken with B.C. Forests minister about the worsening situation, and that the federal government stood ready to support the province in any way needed. We are ready to support in any way needed. Historic Nahatlatch Lookout tower burns near in B.C. wildfire As of Friday evening, there were 380 active fires across B.C. At a briefing earlier Friday, Ma said that about 2,500 people had been forced from their homes in West Kelowna, Kelowna and surrounding communities. Emergency officials have said a “significant” number of structures had been destroyed, by the McDougall Creek fire, and Ma said officials were still working to determine the extent of the damage. The fire, discovered Tuesday, has grown to more than 6,000 hectares in size, according to the BC Wildfire Service. Ma also urged people not to travel to the central Interior or southeastern British Columbia during the current flare up in fire activity. “The central and southeast are facing high risks of wildfires due to the developing situation,” she said. Story continues below advertisement “If you must travel, study the BC Wildfire Service interactive map and emergencyinfobc.ca to learn about active evac alerts and orders. We all need to give BC Wildfire Service personnel the space they need to keep us safe.” Highway 1 is already closed through from Hope to Lytton, where the Kookipi Creek fire has pushed into the Fraser Canyon, forcing evacuations. “We are facing extremely challenging fire situation — we remain in the midst of a strong weather pattern that is creating sustained winds and dry lightning. This has significant effects throughout the province,” Forests Minister Bruce Ralston told the afternoon briefing. “We had significant growth of existing fires and some new fires started overnight … The impact will be felt throughout the weekend, and we undoubtedly will see more fires and more extreme fire behavior in the coming days.” ‘It was worse than we had expected’: West Kelowna fire chief on challenging fight Cliff Chapman, provincial operations director for the BC Wildfire Service, said windy weather on the heels of a heat wave that saw temperatures top 40 C in many areas of the Interior, exacerbated fires everywhere in the province on Thursday. Story continues below advertisement “I’ve been in BC Wildfire Service my entire career, over 20 years, and there’s only a few dates that stick out for me as dates that will always be engraved in my head. Yesterday is one of those days,” he said. “We knew the weather was coming, we knew it was going to have a big impact on the fires, and it did. And now we’re seeing the catastrophic impact fires can have as they interface with communities, critical infrastructure and humans.” Refusal to evacuate Chapman said crews handled several incidents during Thursday night’s destructive firefight involving people who had refused to obey evacuation orders. In more than one case, RCMP, fire department and BC Wildfire Service staff were forced to return into the evacuation zone to perform rescues, he said. “That puts their lives at risk — obviously the people who choose to stay’s lives are at risk — and has a significant toll on the mental and physical health of our staff, and those who are there trying to get people out of the way of fires that are very unpredictable, moving extremely fast, at rates that we rarely see in British Columbia,” he said “Now is not the time to ignore an evacuation order. We need you out of your homes, we need you out of the way, so we can focus on trying to protect those homes and trying to steer the fire away from critical infrastructure.” Refusal to heed evacuation orders putting emergency crews at risk Ma added that no matter how upset or anxious evacuees are about the possibility their home may have been damaged by a fire, no one should return to an evacuated area under any circumstances. Aggressive fire growth The BC Wildfire Service is responding in force to multiple fires across southern British Columbia that have seen aggressive growth thanks to the shift to windy weather, Chapman said. Story continues below advertisement The McDougall Creek fire, threatening the West Kelowna area, saw “significant” growth overnight, expanding six-fold. “We saw significant challenges with the fire interfacing with people’s homes, and structures and critical infrastructure,” he said. “The fire continued to display aggressive fire behaviour from early in the day all the way through until this morning, and it continues to display aggressive fire behaviour.” Air tankers are currently working to contain the fire, along with ground crews including multiple municipal fire departments and structure protection. Fires have also ignited on the east side of the lake in Kelowna proper, but Chapman said officials had yet to confirm whether the McDougall fire “jumped” the lake, or if the new fires were unrelated. The Kookipi Creek fire also saw explosive growth, sweeping down the Nahatlatch drainage into the Fraser Canyon proper, he added. That fire is so aggressive, flames have been observed towering over trees as high as 200 feet tall. To the northwest, three fires burning west of Lillooet that are now being called the Casper Creek complex have also flared dramatically. “We had one of our fires in that complex jump Carpenter Lake and Road 40, which is the one access egress route, main transportation corridor into Gold Bridge, which is now under evacuation order,” he said. Story continues below advertisement The Stein Mountain fire in the Stein Valley and the Downton Lake fire near Gun Lake have also seen major growth, he said. The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District significantly expanded an evacuation order in the area, which includes Gold Bridge and Seton Portage, Friday. Structure protection has been deployed “to do our best to protect the homes and cottages that are on these lakes,” Chapman said. Crews had better news to report in the battle against several other major fires, however, Chapman said. In B.C.’s southeast, winds did exacerbate the Horsethief Creek wildfire, but forecast dry lightning didn’t show up in large volumes and was accompanied by some precipitation. However, the wildfire service expects that fire will still challenge its guards for the next 24 hours. The Ross Moore Lake fire, which has triggered evacuation orders south of Kamloops, did not see growth on the scale as some other fires as well, he said, with assigned crews having some success on suppression efforts. The fight against the Lower East Adams Lake fire north of Chase, similarly, was also going well. Crews conducted a successful planned ignition there Thursday, and while a few spot fires have escaped containment, firefighters are attacking them. “It will be our continued effort throughout the day to try and hold and secure that line where we did the planned ignition in the interest of protecting North Shuswap and beyond,” he said. Ma urged anyone facing possible evacuation to reach out to friends and family ahead of time to try and arrange accommodation, as hotels are already heavily booked due to high tourism season.

British Columbia declared a state of emergency Friday due to the “unprecedented” situation, Premier David Eby said. All residents of Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, and nearby First Nations were given until 12 p.m. MT on Friday to evacuate as smoke continued to billow in the area. A fast-moving wildfire blazed through West Kelowna Thursday, destroying several homes and businesses. On Friday, the wildfire jumped Okanagan Lake to threaten the larger city of Kelowna and nearby communities. The smoke grounded planes at Kelowna International Airport and airspace was closed over the region. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was visiting the Edmonton Expo Centre that was housing evacuees from Yellowknife and other northern communities, told reporters Friday residents in Kelowna were facing “an extraordinarily scary afternoon.” He urged people to heed evacuation orders and follow advice from B.C. officials, after commending those who fled the Northwest Territories before the Friday deadline. Health concerns in east As people flee their homes and communities burn in the west and north, provinces to the east are set to see impacts from the wildfires as well. “Smoke from wildfires is still expected to affect a large part of the Prairie provinces into the weekend,” explained Global News meteorologist Ross Hull. “Winds out of the northwest have been driving smoke from wildfires in B.C., northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories to the south and east across the country.” Parts of northern Ontario and Quebec could have air quality impacts due to this smoke, he said. And a change in wind direction will likely alleviate the current smoke risk in central and eastern Canada into the weekend. STORY CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT Wildfires spread in B.C., N.W.T., forcing evacuations and sending smoke east - image Wildfire smoke forcast Federal Health Minister Mark Holland, spoke about the wildfires Friday at the Canadian Medical Association summit in Ottawa, highlighting the link between poor air quality and health. “The evacuation that is occurring, the devastation that is happening there…that some folks are going to come back and now have a home…how could you not be gripped by that?” he said. “The declining planet with worse air and extreme weather events is going to have incredibly injurious effects on our health-care system. In the Northwest Territories today what are we doing with the folks who have to evacuate and can’t go to health-care providers in their own jurisdiction?” How to protect yourself against wildfire smoke When a wildfire burns, it releases pollutants into the air, including sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, which can be hazardous to human health in the short and long term. STORY CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT “It can travel miles and miles away from the actual fire,” Angela Yao, a senior scientist at B.C. Centre for Disease Contro, previously told Global News on May 11.“And when it reaches us, it can get pretty deep into our lungs and cause inflammation.” And symptoms from wildfire smoke can vary. Mild symptoms may include irritated eyes, sore throat or headaches. More severe symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath and chest pains are more likely to affect vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with pre-existing conditions like asthma or diabetes, Yao said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT The air quality health index ranges from low risk (around one to three on the scale) to high risk (around seven to 10 on the scale). If the air quality index is reading high risk, Howard said, people should refrain from any outdoor activity and stay inside if possible. If the scale is moderate risk, Howard said people who have varying vulnerabilities, such as a pre-existing respiratory condition, may want to modify their activities as there is some risk.
