Guy Bluford, First African American in Space 40 Years of Inspiration
In 1983, Guy Bluford made history by becoming the first African American astronaut to venture into space, shattering barriers and leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of space exploration. This pivotal moment in history is celebrated not only for its significance in diversifying the astronaut corps but also for the remarkable achievements during Bluford's inaugural mission, STS-8.
STS-8, which took off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on August 30, 1983, was a groundbreaking mission for several reasons:
Night Launch and Landing: STS-8 was distinctive as it featured a night launch and night landing, adding an extra layer of complexity and significance to the mission.
Challenger Orbiter: The space shuttle Challenger, on its third flight, was the chosen orbiter for this mission.
INSAT-1B Deployment: One of the primary objectives of STS-8 was the deployment of the Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1B) into orbit. This satellite played a crucial role in India's telecommunications and meteorological capabilities.
RMS Operation: The crew operated the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) with the Payload Flight Test Article (PFTA), showcasing the potential of robotic arms in space applications.
CFES Experiment: Bluford and his fellow astronauts also conducted experiments using the Continuous Flow Electrophoresis System (CFES) with live cell samples. This was pivotal in understanding how certain processes function in the unique microgravity environment of space.
Medical Research: Medical measurements were an essential part of the mission, aiming to gain insights into how spaceflight affects the human body. This research was crucial for ensuring the health and well-being of future astronauts.
"Getaway Special" Canisters: STS-8 featured the activation of four "Getaway Special" canisters, which were designed for conducting small, self-contained experiments in the space environment.
Mission Duration: STS-8 completed a remarkable 98 orbits around the Earth during its 145-hour mission.
Landing: The mission concluded with a night landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California on September 5, 1983.
Guy Bluford's participation in STS-8 and his role in carrying out these diverse experiments not only advanced our understanding of space but also emphasized the growing capabilities of the Space Shuttle program. His achievement as the first African American astronaut in space stands as an enduring source of inspiration, underlining the importance of diversity in the field of space exploration.

How Do Spacecraft Slow Down? We Asked a NASA Technologist
How do spacecraft slow down? Rigid heat shields and retropropulsion have been the favorites of engineers for years. Now NASA is testing a new inflatable heat shield technology that could allow us to carry even larger payloads to worlds with atmospheres: https://www.nasa.gov/loftid Launching on Nov. 1 aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket along with NOAA’s JPSS-2 mission, the Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator, or LOFTID, will demonstrate the heat shield’s ability to slow down and survive atmospheric entry: https://go.nasa.gov/3N7yzBG Producers: Scott Bednar, Jessica Wilde Editor: Daniel Salazar Credit: NASA #NASA #Technology #Spacecraft

| Lucy Spacecraft's Rapid | Earth Flyby | A Close and Quick Encounter |
The Jupiter Trojans are two swarms of prehistoric asteroids caught in Jupiter's orbit that could provide information on how planets formed. NASA's Lucy mission is traveling there. Launched on October 16, 2021, was Lucy. On the anniversary of its launch, it is heading home after spending a year in solar orbit in preparation for the first of three Earth gravity assistance. A swing dancing companion, Lucy will pass past the Earth on October 16, 2022, accelerating it and lengthening its orbit around the Sun. Lucy will come within 219 miles of Earth at its closest approach at 7:04 a.m. Eastern Time, which is lower than the International Space Station. Its speed will increase by 4.5 miles per second as a result of this incredibly close encounter, sending Lucy into a tailspin.

How to Bring Mars Sample Tubes Safely to Earth (Mars News Report)
NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover is filling sample tubes with rocky material on the Red Planet as the agency works on the next steps to get them safely back to Earth. The Mars Sample Return campaign would bring samples collected by the Perseverance rover to Earth for detailed study. The campaign involves an international interplanetary relay team, including the European Space Agency (ESA). These samples could answer a key question: did life ever exist on Mars? Aaron Yazzie, who works on the Mars Sample Return campaign, explains the work being done at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to ensure the safe return of the sample tubes. SWOT: Earth Science Satellite Will Help Communities Plan for a Better Future
SWOT: Earth Science Satellite Will Help Communities Plan for a Better Future
A new Earth science mission, led by NASA and the French space agency Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), will help communities plan for a better future by surveying the planet’s salt and freshwater bodies. The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission will measure the height of water in lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and oceans. As climate change accelerates the water cycle, more communities around the world will be inundated with water while others won’t have enough. SWOT data will be used to improve flood forecasts and monitor drought conditions, providing essential information to water management agencies, civil engineers, universities, the U.S. Department of Defense, disaster preparedness agencies, and others who need to track water in their local areas. In this video, examples of how SWOT data will be used in these communities are shared by a National Weather Service representative in Oregon, an Alaska Department of Transportation engineer, researchers from the University of Oregon and the University of North Carolina, a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist working with the Department of Defense, and a JPL scientist working with the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Agency. :30 - Flood Watches & Warnings - Portland, Oregon 1:08 - Water Management - Fern Ridge Lake, Oregon 2:05 - Protecting Infrastructure - Alaska 2:54 - National Security - Department of Defense 3:24 - Coastal Protection - Mississippi River Delta SWOT is expected to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California in December 2022. The mission is a collaboration between NASA and CNES, with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency and UK Space Agency. JPL, which is managed for NASA by Caltech in Pasadena, California, leads the U.S. component of the project. NASA Tests Ways to Crash Land on Mars
We’re testing a new way of landing on Mars… by crashing into its surface. The Simplified High Impact Energy Landing Device (SHIELD) is a lander concept being tested at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). It could one day provide a new way for low-cost missions to land on Mars. Rather than rely on parachutes or retrorockets, SHIELD would include a collapsible, accordion-like base to absorb the energy of a landing. A full-size prototype of the base was tested on Aug. 12, 2022. The prototype was hurled at the ground from the top of a nearly 90-foot-tall (27-meter-tall) drop tower at JPL. A steel plate ensured the impact was even harder than what would be experienced on Mars. The design worked: After crushing against the steel plate at 110 mph (177 kph), several electronic components inside the SHIELD prototype, including a smartphone, survived the impact.
