Guy Bluford, First African American in Space: 40 Years of Inspiration
In 1983, NASA’s Guy Bluford broke barriers and made history as the first African American astronaut in space. Hear from Bluford himself, see footage from his Space Shuttle missions, and celebrate the milestones that forever changed the landscape of space exploration.
Bluford’s first mission was STS-8, which launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on Aug. 30, 1983. This was the third flight for the Challenger orbiter, and the first mission with a night launch and night landing. During the mission, the STS-8 crew deployed the Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1B), operated the Canadian-built RMS with the Payload Flight Test Article (PFTA), operated the Continuous Flow Electrophoresis System (CFES) with live cell samples, conducted medical measurements to understand biophysiological effects of spaceflight, and activated four “Getaway Special” canisters. STS-8 completed 98 orbits of the Earth in 145 hours before landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on Sept. 5, 1983.

A Commercial Resupply Mission Heads to the Space Station on This Week Nasa
Commercial resupply missions to the International Space Station (ISS) involve private companies delivering essential supplies, equipment, experiments, and sometimes crew members to the space station. These missions play a crucial role in maintaining the ISS's operations and supporting scientific research conducted in the unique microgravity environment of space. As of my last update in September 2021, here's what typically happens during a commercial resupply mission:
Launch: A commercial launch provider, such as SpaceX with their Falcon 9 rocket or Northrop Grumman with their Antares rocket, is contracted by a space agency like NASA to launch a resupply spacecraft into space.
Spacecraft: The resupply spacecraft, like SpaceX's Dragon or Northrop Grumman's Cygnus, is loaded with supplies, equipment, scientific experiments, and other cargo intended for the ISS. These items are carefully packed and secured to ensure they can withstand the stresses of launch and space travel.
Orbital Rendezvous: After reaching orbit, the resupply spacecraft maneuvers to rendezvous with the ISS. This involves carefully calculated orbital maneuvers to align the spacecraft's path with that of the space station.
Capture and Berthing: The resupply spacecraft approaches the ISS and is captured using the station's robotic arm (Canadarm2). Astronauts on board the ISS operate the robotic arm to carefully grab and guide the spacecraft to a docking port on the station.
Unloading and Loading: Once securely attached to the ISS, the astronauts start unloading the cargo from the resupply spacecraft. They carefully transfer supplies, equipment, and experiments from the spacecraft to the station.
Trash Removal: In addition to delivering supplies, the resupply mission often includes the important task of removing waste, spent equipment, and used experiments from the ISS. This helps maintain a healthy living environment for the astronauts.
Scientific Research: The cargo delivered during resupply missions often includes various scientific experiments from different research disciplines. These experiments take advantage of the unique microgravity environment to study phenomena that can't be replicated on Earth.
Return to Earth: After spending several weeks or months attached to the ISS, the resupply spacecraft is loaded with experiments and other cargo for the return journey. Some resupply spacecraft are designed to burn up upon reentry into Earth's atmosphere, while others may return intact with valuable research samples.
It's important to note that developments in the space industry can occur rapidly, and there may have been changes or advancements since my last update. Companies like SpaceX have been at the forefront of commercial resupply missions, pioneering reusable rocket technology and significantly reducing the cost of access to space. Other companies, like Northrop Grumman and Boeing, have also played key roles in supporting the ISS through resupply missions.

How Will We Extract Water on the Moon? We Asked a NASA Technologist
Extracting water on the Moon is an important goal for future lunar exploration and potential human settlement. Water is valuable because it can be used for drinking, growing plants, generating oxygen, and producing rocket fuel through the process of electrolysis. Here are a few methods that have been proposed or considered for extracting water on the Moon:
Lunar Ice: The Moon's poles are believed to have areas with permanently shadowed regions where temperatures are cold enough for water ice to exist. Probes and orbiters have detected signatures of water ice in these regions. Extracting this ice would involve sending robotic or manned missions to these areas and using drilling or excavation tools to access the ice deposits.
Regolith Processing: The lunar regolith, the layer of loose material covering the Moon's surface, contains small amounts of water in the form of hydrated minerals. Heating the regolith can release this bound water, which can then be collected and condensed. This method requires energy, such as solar power, to heat the regolith and release the water.
Solar Wind Interaction: The solar wind, a stream of charged particles from the Sun, contains hydrogen. When these hydrogen ions impact the Moon's surface, they can react with oxygen in the regolith to form water molecules. This process is slow and produces relatively small amounts of water, but it's a continuous source over long timescales.
Mining and Processing: Advanced mining and processing techniques could be developed to extract water from various sources on the Moon, such as underground reservoirs or deposits near the surface. These methods would likely involve drilling, excavation, and chemical processing to release and collect the water.
Volatiles from Impacting Bodies: Impacts from comets, asteroids, or other celestial bodies can release volatiles like water upon impact with the Moon's surface. Collecting and storing these volatiles after an impact event could provide a source of water.
It's worth noting that while extracting water on the Moon is theoretically possible, it presents significant engineering and logistical challenges. The harsh lunar environment, extreme temperature variations, and the need to develop reliable and efficient extraction technologies make this a complex endeavor. Nonetheless, several space agencies and private companies are actively researching and planning missions to explore water extraction methods on the Moon to support future lunar activities.
