Hog Wars | Preston's 1st Triple! [Graphic]
Wild hogs continue to cause mass damage to our farm and the farmers crops. We started the "hog wars" series to bring light to how bad the wild hog situation has become in central Georgia. We've become better at locating, baiting, timing, and shooting as many of these wild hogs as possible. We are working hard at controlling the population and it seems to be paying off as we are starting to see more deer returning to our farm.
This particular video was tough to film as it was very humid and the temperature was nearly 100 degrees. On top of that, the mosquito's and gnats made it impossible to be still. This is not the most fun time of the year to hunt but managing the feral hog population is important to deer herd health for the fall.

Hog Wars | Wild Hogs Are Destroying Our Farm! Payback Time!
Wild Hogs are very destructive to farms all across Georgia. They compete for habitat with other species such as deer and turkey. If left unchecked they will destroy thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of farmers crops each season. In this video we will show you some of the damage hogs are doing to our farm and habitat. We are doing our best to thin them out but they proliferate so fast that it seems almost hopeless. Needless to say wild pigs are fun to hunt and offer some tasty bites as well. Stay tuned as we will be posting future videos on tactics to address our wild hog problem.

Cotton Candy for Deer: How to Plant Iron & Clay Cowpeas!
Iron and Clay Cowpeas are a summer favorite of both deer and deer hunters. Deer hunters love iron and clay cowpeas because they are easy to plant, drought tolerate, grow fast, and provide a great food source throughout the summer. Deer love them because they are a delicious succulent plant filled with taste, protein, and moister.
Iron and Clay Cowpeas can be grown in most of the country between May and August. I plant them every year in my fall plots and they last until the 1st frost while they draw deer in (sheee...that's my little secret!). I like cowpeas better than soybeans because they grow faster, they re-fork better after being eaten, and they are more drought tolerant. However, deer love soybeans too!
In this video, I show you how I plant Iron and Clay Cowpeas into my seeded out fall plots from last season. I start by burning down the plots with 41% Glyphosate and then spreading the Cowpeas directly into the weeds. I then come behind that with my harrow and cover them up with dirt...done. This method works really well and is a minimal way to get cowpeas in the ground while cleaning up the weeds in your food plots. I do inoculate my seed but in many case you do not need to. Inoculation is important for many legumes if you are planning on the plants going to full maturity and producing beans or peas. If you are only planting to get them out of the ground a few inches to pull in deer then you don't need to inoculate. They will come up and the deer will eat them so fast that you'll think you did something wrong while planting them.
I buy my seed and https://www.seedworldusa.com/. What's nice about this company is that they break down 50lb bags so that hunters can order just a few pounds of seed for their smaller plots. Many guys find success planting cowpeas in their smaller bow plots ahead of bow season and they don't need a 50lb bag. Nothing will draw in deer for bowhunting like Iron and Clay Cowpeas.
It's not too late to plant some cowpeas this summer or even going into the fall. Get those iron and clay cowpeas in the ground and pull those deer in!

DIY Deer Feeder Solar Done Right! 100% Maintenance Free!!!
DIY solar power is growing topic among hunters nationwide as they seek to extend or sustain power to trail cameras, deer feeders, vehicle batteries, and hunting camps, etc. As popular as the topic is it doesn’t seem as though the hunting industry understands the needs of hunters when it comes to solar products. The hunting industry continues to produce solar products for deer feeders (6 volt & 12 volt) with a “one size fits all” strategy which leaves hunters disappointed in their quest to fully sustain battery power to trail cameras, deer feeders, and miscellaneous stuff around hunting camps, etc. The hunting industry should produce multiple sizes and types of solar panels to better fit the needs of hunters based on their project and access to sunlight. If a hunter knows his feeder will be in an open field with 8 hours of sunlight then he can get away with a smaller panel (a poly or mono type). If a hunter knows his feeder will be in complete shade then he is going to need an amorphous type panel to generate energy from low light and sustain 100% charge. It’s as simple as that.
In this video, I will explain how the hunting industry’s “one size fits all” mentality let me down as a consumer when I ran 6volt solar panels with 6volt deer feeders. When I upgraded my three deer feeders to 12volt motors I then decided to build my own custom solar setup that would guarantee a completely maintenance free deer feeder. Kaboom…It worked! No more dead batteries and no more trading out weak batteries. I’ve even used these feeders in complete shade and these amorphous style solar panels kept the batteries at 100% charge in low light conditions. My three feeders have been running for 3-4 years with not one issue! They stay 100% charged 24/7 and my batteries are still healthy after 3-4 years (they will eventually go bad which is completely normal and expected). The time and hassle this has saved me over the years has been worth every penny!
The success of this system is mainly due to the type of solar panel I use. Amorphous style panels can generate energy from “daylight” versus direct “sunlight”. Hunters should stick with amorphous style solar panels as they are more versatile for various lighting conditions compared to monocrystalline or polycrystalline style panels (For example- deer feeder is placed in complete shade, under a hardwood canopy, or in thick cover, etc). Amorphous style solar panels collect light and generate power in very low light conditions which should give every hunter confidence and flexibility in deer feeder placement.
Below is a list of things you will need to complete a DIY solar setup like mine for your deer feeder:
Wire size from solar panel to battery-18ga-20ga is perfect
