Robotics: Hand Upgrades & Modifications
What is this video series about? I'm building a robot arm from scratch! Follow me on my journey as I make a breakthrough, hit a wall, and even check out what parts I'm using!
I did some redesigning of the fused carpals section, added hooks and orthodontic rubber bands as ligaments, added some grippers on the finger tips, and started modifying the tendons to add quick disconnects make modifications and repairs a lot easier.

Robotics: Anatomy of a Hand!
What is this video series about? I'm building a robot arm from scratch! Follow me on my journey as I make a breakthrough, hit a wall, and even check out what parts I'm using!
About a week ago I posted a short "quick and dirty", un-narrated video of the robotic hand I've been working on. I hooked up fishing line to each of the phalanges and showed how the joints worked as designed.
In today's video I show some upgrades I made to the metacarpals and joints for better stability, organization, and mobility. I've been working on this about two weeks an it's turned out better than I expected!
I also walk through some of the reasoning for design changes, things I've noticed, a few challenges, a few printer upgrades (such as adding a glass bed to my 3D printer), and a lot more!

Robotics: The Robot (R)Evolution!
What is this video series about? I'm building a robot arm from scratch! Follow me on my journey as I make a breakthrough, hit a wall, and even check out what parts I'm using!
Two big updates - the first gripper arm I built turned out really well and I started building a human sized hand with full range of motion!
In this video I talk about both designs coming to live and then talk about how this project has evolved, my thinking process as I develop parts, and my thanks to the various communities that have been giving me so much support!

Robotics Project: 3D Printed Arm Assembled!
What is this video series about? I'm building a robot gripper arm from scratch! Follow me on my journey as I make a breakthrough, hit a wall, and even check out what parts I'm using!
I've been busy designing and printing out a lot of parts for the robot arm on my Ender 3 3D printer and now they are all assembled! I'm no longer using Sketchup and have converted to using Fusion 360 completely. Since the conversion, Cura isn't having as many slicing issues so the robot arm turned out beautifully.
I'm currently designing a custom gripper that'll I'll unveil soon!

I recently bought a 3D printer and started to print out some new arm supports (goodbye popsicle sticks!). In this video I go through the general process I've used to build these parts.

Robotics: Robot Arm is Now Twice as Strong!
What is this video series about? I'm building a robot gripper arm from scratch! Follow me on my journey as I make a breakthrough, hit a wall, and even check out what parts I'm using!
Special thanks to Designatronics for sending sample parts to test out! If you're also building a homemade robot, work with automation in manufacturing, or are a remote control vehicle enthusiast they have a huge assortment of high quality parts to choose from!
Check out their site at http://sdp-si.com
Also, if you'd like to know more about them and their team check these videos out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4KQi_7ztek - Enterprises Television Show Feature
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqJbZN2MyQc - Engineered Solutions for a World in Motion
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds9_n1o9cdI - SDP/SI Facility Tour
Disclaimer: After reading the YouTube terms & conditions I'm not 100% sure that YouTube requires that sample products to be considered "paid product placement or endorsement" so I checked the box as to prevent this video from being de-monetized in the future.
I rebuilt the base of the robot arm so it could support a lot more weight. I added a 2nd motor synchronized with the first to generate a lot more torque to move the arm closer to the "shoulder" and also above the elbow (or "forearm").
The pulleys and belts from Designatronics are found here:
http://shop.sdp-si.com/catalog/product/?id=A_6A51M060DF0606#
https://sdp-si.com/products/timing-belts/gt2.php - A 6R51M100060
I can only use 3 driver control boards at the moment but the MCP23017 chips I purchased should do the trick. I'll cover that in the next video since there are a lot of RPi updates I have to finish before that'll work.
I'll add the link to the source of the Python code I started with as a reference when I find it. I modified it to run 2 motors in sync.

Robotics: MyoWare Muscle Sensor Walkthrough
What is this video series about? I'm building a robot gripper arm from scratch! Follow me on my journey as I make a breakthrough, hit a wall, and even check out what parts I'm using!
In one of my first un-narrated videos, I did a test run with my MyoWare muscle sensor that I hooked to a Feather board, isolator, and my arm. I was still a bit camera shy and the video didn't really have any instructions, explanations, etc.
This video shows what the sensor is capable of, one of the stumbling blocks I ran into, and how to set it up.
Here are a few links for reference:
https://learn.adafruit.com/getting-started-with-myoware-muscle-sensor/about-emg
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-feather-32u4-basic-proto/using-with-arduino-ide
https://learn.adafruit.com/heybrows
The MyoWare muscle sensor uses electromyography (EMG) placed on the skin surface to measure the electrical activity produced my muscle cells. By measuring the potential or voltage difference between the two electrodes it sends the output signal to the screen as a value or a graph (electromyogram).
Note: I purchased these products except the MyoWare sensor (Christmas gift). No sponsored or donated equipment or software has been provided in this video.

Robotics: Gears vs. Belts While Using My Elegoo Stepper Motors, ULN2003 Drivers, and Raspberry Pi
What is this video series about? I'm building a robot gripper arm from scratch! Follow me on my journey as I make a breakthrough, hit a wall, and even check out what parts I'm using!
This episode I go over a bump in the road as I was working on the robotics project. It was a good thing to run into the problem now rather than to get further along and have to rebuild part of it.
In this video I'm using my Raspberry Pi, Elegoo stepper motors, and ULN2003 drivers.
Check it out!

Robotics Project: Starting MK2 Build
What is this video series about? I'm building a robot gripper arm from scratch! Follow me on my journey as I make a breakthrough, hit a wall, and even check out what parts I'm using!
In this episode, I'm rebuilding my robot gripper arm from the ground up from scratch with upgraded stepper motors and remote control vehicle parts. The first mini robot was hooked up directly to my Raspberry Pi but the next version is going to be connected to my ChipKit Pi.

Robotics Project: Successfully expand the robot gripper arm to lift and turn it

I wanted to see if I could add servos to my first project and make a miniature arm. I had some tilt pans and zip tied them together. The arm is a bit heavy so it sags some but it did what it was programmed to!
