গত বছর পয়লা জুন রাতে ওর সঙ্গে আমার প্রথম দেখা হয় সাতছড়ি জাতীয় উদ্যানে। কিন্তু তখন আমি সাপ-ব্যাঙ-পাখি নিয়ে ব্যস্ত থাকায় ওর প্রতি বিশেষ নজর দিতে পারিনি। ছবি তুলে কম্পিউটারে আপলোড করে রেখে দিয়েছি। একবারও মনোযোগ দিয়ে ওর ছবিটি দেখিনি। অথচ ওকে আমার অনেক প্রয়োজন ছিল, তাই খুঁজছিলাম বেশ কিছুদিন ধরে। এরপর অক্টোবরের ৫ তারিখ বিকেলে ওকে আবার আবিষ্কার করলাম সিলেটের খাদিমনগর ইকো পার্কে। তখন ভেবেছিলাম আমি বোধ হয় এই প্রথম ওর ছবি তুলেছি। কিন্তু আরও মাস খানেক পর কম্পিউটারে ছবি খুঁজতে গিয়ে বুঝলাম প্রাণীটির প্রথম দেখা পেয়েছিলাম সাতছড়িতেই এবং সেখানেই প্রথম ছবি তুলেছি। এ বছর চলতি মাসের শুরুতে সাতছড়িতে গিয়ে বাচ্চা-কাচ্চাসহ ওর সঙ্গে আবার দেখা হয়ে গেল। একবার নয়, তিন দিনে বেশ কবার দেখা হলো। এবার বেশ কয়েকটি ভালো ছবিও তুলতে পারলাম। এই হলো এ দেশের এক দুর্লভ গিরগিটি, ‘বন ঝুঁটিয়াল গিরগিটি’ বা ‘বনবাসী রক্তচোষা’ নামেও পরিচিত। ইংরেজিতে Forest Crested Lizard বা Emma Grays Forest Lizard নামে পরিচিত। আমাদের অতিপরিচিত বাগানের গিরগিটি, যা সাধারণত ‘রক্তচোষা’, বা ‘কাকলাস’ (Garden Lizard)-এর জাতভাই। Agamidae পরিবারের এই সদস্যের বৈজ্ঞানিক নাম Calotes emma। এখানে বলা ভালো যে আত্মরক্ষার প্রয়োজনে এরা শরীরের রঙের পরিবর্তন করতে পারে, বিশেষত লালচে হয়ে ওঠে। সে কারণে সাধারণ লোকে ভাবে, সে রক্ত চুষে নিচ্ছে। এ কারণেই তাদের রক্তচোষা নামকরণ। প্রকৃতপক্ষে নিরীহ এই প্রাণীর রক্ত চুষে নেওয়ার কোনো ক্ষমতাই নেই। অকারণ ভয় পেয়ে লোকে এদের মেরে ফেলে। আমরা তাদের রক্তচোষা না বলে গিরগিটিই বলব। প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক ‘বন ঝুঁটিয়াল গিরগিটি’ ৪১-৪২ সেন্টিমিটার লম্বা হয়। চোখের ওপরের এক জোড়া কাঁটা বাদে চেহারা প্রায় বাগানের গিরগিটির মতোই। এদের দেহের ওপরটা বাদামি, তাতে প্রায়ই গাঢ় বাদামি দাগ বা ফোঁটা থাকে। দেহের মধ্যভাগে এই দাগ বেশ উজ্জ্বল। নিচটা সাদাটে। চোখের ভেতর থেকে গাঢ় একটি রেখা বেরিয়ে এসেছে। উত্তেজিত হলে মাথা ও গলা কালো রং ধারণ করে। ঘাড় ও পিঠে স্পষ্ট চূড়া বা ঝুঁটি দেখা যায়। এ ছাড়া ঘাড়ের সামনে কালো ভাঁজ থাকে। মাথায় অসম আকৃতির ও ফুসকুড়িযুক্ত আঁইশ থাকে। মাথার উভয় পাশে থাকে তিনটি গুচ্ছে কাঁটা বা ‘স্পাইন’। প্রজননঋতুতে পুরুষ গিরগিটির দেহের সামনের অংশের ত্বক কালো রং ধারণ করে। ‘বন ঝুঁটিয়াল গিরগিটি’ দিবাচর ও বৃক্ষচারী। এরা একাকী বা জোড়ায় ঘুরে বেড়ায়। মূলত পোকামাকড় ও কীটপতঙ্গ খেয়ে জীবনযাপন করে। চিরসবুজ পাহাড়ি বনাঞ্চল ও বনাঞ্চলের চারপাশের এলাকায় বাস করতে পছন্দ করে। বর্তমানে সিলেট ও চট্টগ্রাম বিভাগের মিশ্র চিরসবুজ বনে এদের দেখা যায়। বাংলাদেশ ছাড়াও দুর্লভ এই গিরগিটিগুলো ভারত, চীন, মিয়ানমারসহ দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার অনেক দেশেই এদের দেখা মেলে। স্ত্রী ‘বন ঝুঁটিয়াল গিরগিটি’ ১২টি ডিম্বাকৃতির ডিম দেয়। যেহেতু প্রজননসংক্রান্ত তথ্য খুব একটা পাওয়া যায় না, তাই এ দিকটাতে গবেষণা হওয়া দারকার। ‘বন ঝুঁটিয়াল গিরগিটি’ আমাদের পরম বন্ধু। এরা ক্ষতিকারক কীটপতঙ্গ খেয়ে বেশ উপকার করে। কাজেই এদের রক্ষা করার জন্য সবার সচেতন হওয়া উচিত।
