Prophet Elijah (1 Kings)

Here Paul addresses issues raised by the church of Corinth further in regard to whether it is better to be a virgin or married. He emphasises prioritising serving God and that time is short on this earth. He also says he is not giving commandments from God but advising from himself what is beneficial. Here Paul writes responding to queries from the Corinth church about marriage and what is required becoming a Christian. He explains how it is a good thing to be single and unmarried. Also how husbands and wives have authorities over each other. He goes on to talk about submitting to Christ within the state in which you find yourself and that the believer sanctifies their families through faith. Elisha is determined to stick by Elijah's side right until the end. He asks Elijah for a double portion of his spirit. Elijah says he can have it as long as he sees Elijah go up to heaven. Elisha does this despite a chariot of fire coming and dividing them. Elisha now steps out as the new prophet of Israel! Paul brings a strong rebuke to brothers in Christ, taking each other to a court of law for unrighteous judges to judge them. He also explains the need to not engage in sexual immorality because you were not given your body for that. You were given your body to host the living God! The Holy Spirit! Ahaziah is evil like his father Ahab. He worships Baal until he falls through the roof of his highest room. Upon asking Baal if he would recover, Elijah arrives to tell him that because he has sought Baal that he will die, never leaving his bed again. Kings soldiers are sent to seize Elijah but he calls fire from heaven to consume them! Crazy! Paul rebukes the Corinthians for being puffed up and glorifying themselves. He is sending Timothy to remind them of how Paul walks in Chris, low, humble and that they are not divided because they all received from Paul and should not act as though they did not receive. He also addresses sexual immorality and tells them not to keep company with brothers who are immoral. Paul teaches us how God grows each one of us spiritually through people. Paul planted, Apollos watered but God gives the increase. Do not put the wisdom of men above God's wisdom. Do not judge yourself or others as you are a poor judge and Jesus will reveal all and judge correctly when He returns! Here we see a curious word given by a prophet that the Lord sent a lying spirit to convince Ahab to go to battle where he would die. Micaiah is a prophet of God who Ahab imprisons and tortures because he tells him of this. A number of prophecies come to pass and Ahab meets his death in curious circumstances. Paul explains the difference between being carnal and spiritual. That we can only receive the wisdom of God by being spiritual because He is Spirit and we cannot by being carnal because God is not carnal. Paul writes more about how god will use the low and foolish things of this world to shame the wise. We cannot be wiser than God who knows all things. God will intentionally use fools to spread his message and represent him so people can see it is God who should be glorified and not men. Jezebel causes an innocent man to be stoned to death so Ahab can have his vineyard. God calls Elijah to deliver a damning verdict to him and Jezebel for the evil they have done. The King of Syria comes making demands of King Ahab that he hands over gold and silver, his loveliest wives and his children! The Israelites tell Ahab not to give in and God sides with Ahab! God brings back the rain. Jezebel is furious her prophets were slain and vows to the God's she will kill Elijah or she should be killed worse than her prophets. Elijah flees, distraught and God provides and then speaks with Elijah in a cave on a mountain. Amazing!
