The Phantom of the Opera is sometimes considered one of the Universal Monsters. I get it. From the 1925 version that gave us one of the most infamous unmasking sequences ever courtesy of the great Lon Chaney Sr., through the Hammer iteration with Herbert Lom, all the way up to the 2004 film that gave a lot of us our intro to Gerard Butler. 1989 was the beginning of its U.S. tour and we got not one but TWO Phantom movies that year. Phantom of the Mall: Erics Revenge is cheesy and may just be more well known due to our friend Joe Bob featuring it on the Last Drive In recently. Here in the Joblo Horror kitchen today we are cooking something up for you. Take one part Freddy Kruger, a dash of Cannon Films, and a heaping helping of nonsensical gory fun and you get a recipe for one of the Best Horror Movies You Never Saw.

The Ruins was one of those hot properties by an author whose previous work was an instant success with critics, fans, and studio executives who put it to celluloid. The book came out, and just two years later, we were given a movie adaptation that had a lot of the original authors’ work in it, mostly because he wrote the screenplay, too. While they came out two years apart and were both written by the same person, how close are these two versions to each other? The first twenty minutes of the 1979 horror film When a Stranger Calls really creeped out movie-goers. It stuck in their heads, earning the movie cult classic status. The rest of the running time, viewers don’t often remember so clearly. So when Screen Gems gave the greenlight to a remake, they decided to expand those first twenty minutes to feature length. Stretching out the thrills and suspense for as long as possible. It was a clever idea that was brought to the screen in an entertaining way. I’ve always really enjoyed The Omen as a franchise. Even as a kid, I found something about the original trilogy centring around Damien Thorn especially gripping. However, I never had much use for the cheap TV movie sequel (Omen IV: The Awakening) or the scene-for-scene remake, which, despite a game cast, didn’t come close to recapturing the grisly spirit of Richard Donner’s original. As such, I figured The First Omen would be just another would-be franchise starter, but I have to give 20th Century Studios and Disney credit - they made one hell of a cool horror flick (pun intended). In some ways, it’s a bit like Wonka (bear with me) in that it’s a prequel that does its own thing without shitting all over the original, with the Donner film and the original movies that follow all existing in the same universe this does.

How cool would it be to wake up in an alternate universe where bizarre versions of your favorite movies existed and you could experience them all over again for the first time? That’s exactly what I can offer to The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon fans who have never experienced Manhunter. The forgotten and abandoned stepchild of the Hannibal Lecter film series. How in the hell does a movie that has the twisted murder weirdness and fascinating serial killer storytelling of a Silence of the Lambs or Mindhunter paired with the coolness of a movie like Heat and flair of a Nicolas Winding Refn film go this unnoticed? Folks, slasher movies are kind of a big deal here on JoBlo Horror Originals. We love seeing Ghost Face reveal their identities at the end of Scream, we revisit the horror of Haddonfield every Halloween and we sure as sh*t make sure to cover our fair share of cult slashers that fly below the mainstream radar. But lately, I’ve been trying to scratch a different itch. I mean, I’m always in the mood for blood and guts, but I’ve been in the mood for something a little more “out there” from a hulking masked killer. Of course, within horror, there are many avenues that I could go down. See, on this show, I’ve covered ghosts, demons, cults, witches, haunted artifacts, monsters, serial killers, and even robots- but I don’t feel that I’ve properly explored- is aliens.

So, like any other horror movie that manages to whip up a frenzy with critics and fans alike, plus a decent box office return, a sequel was inevitable. Although the fevered response to the movie may have been mixed, audiences had a taste for Slovakian-based bloodshed, and Eli Roth was just the man to deliver it. Again. However, with a promise that the grisly ante was going to be upped significantly in the sequel, could Roth prove that the decent premise of the first movie could be expanded upon in the sequel? Today, we examine a largely forgotten early 2000s film adapted from Alan Moore's acclaimed graphic novel. It is based on the very real killings in Whitechapel that were later attributed to Jack The Ripper. While both have a lot of truths to them, along with quite a bit of fantasy and conjecture, how close to the source material does the 2001 film get.
