Phil Johnson's Thoughts on Mormonism: Exclusive Q&A Session
Phil Johnson (Executive Director of Grace To You - @gracetoyou and Pastor/Elder) answers several questions about Mormonism at the 2023 G3 Conference (@G3Ministries). Mormonism seems like "just another Christian denomination" on the surface—but the beliefs and teachings of the LDS Church are quite contrary to Christian beliefs and Biblical teaching.
In this interview with Phil Johnson, we ask questions like "Was the Trinity a product of pagan philosophy?" and "Can we trust our spiritual experiences to know what is true?"

2 Essential Tips for Accurate Bible Interpretation
Dr. James Renihan, president of IRBS (International Reformed Baptist Seminary) and professor of historical theology, explains two principles of Bible interpretation which are critical to a right reading of Scripture.
Often times, Mormons will say that our reading of Scripture is "just your interpretation." How can we know which interpretation is correct? Christians must apply certain interpretive principles to rightly understand what God has revealed. In this video, Dr. Renihan provides two historic guardrails for Bible interpretation: the analogy of Scripture, and the analogy of faith.
God has spoken in His Word, and Scripture is "profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." If Scripture can do these things—then we really are able to rightly interpret the Bible. Understanding principles like these will help protect Christians from misinterpreting the Bible.

Phil Johnson: Was God once a man?
Mormonism teaches that God was once a man, and that men can become gods. In this clip, Phil Johnson explains why he doesn't think that's Biblical.

Mormonism “not so different” from Christianity?
Are there big differences between Mormonism and Christianity? We think so! In this clip, Sandra Tanner of Utah Lighthouse Ministry explains how Mormons don't quite appreciate how vastly different Mormon doctrine and Mormon beliefs are from Christian theology.

John 3:16 vs. Mormonism
The most famous verse in the Bible stands against Mormon doctrine. How can we have eternal life? The Gospel of Jesus Christ teaches that "whoever believes in Him will not perish, but shall have eternal life."

Does God know of other gods?
God says He doesn't know of any other gods, contrary to what Mormon doctrine teaches. When I asked a Latter-day Saint on the street about this - he agreed with what the Bible teaches, contrary to LDS beliefs.

This is a PROBLEM for the Mormon view of atonement
Was it in the Garden of Gethsemane? Or on the cross? Christians and Mormons have long disagreed about the nature of the atonement and where it took place. Christians don't see the garden as being a part of the formal atonement, whereas for Latter-day Saints—it's far more significant!
I've heard different Mormons tell me different things about the role of the Garden in the atonement. Some have said it was almost completely accomplished at Gethsemane, and was only completed at the cross, while others have said it was mostly at the cross—but it began in the Garden.
In either case – this verse from 1 Peter 2 really poses a problem for the LDS understanding of atonement. Peter states that Isaiah 53 was fulfilled at the cross—Isaiah 53 being the text that prophesies that the Messiah would bear our griefs and sorrows and iniquities.
If all of these things were accomplished on the cross (as Peter says), then Christ's suffering in the Garden wasn't the chief cornerstone of the atoning work of the Lord Jesus.

Responding to Mormon Claims: One God "For Us"
Are there many lords and many gods, but only one God "for us"? This tends to be the teaching of many Latter-day Saints—especially concerning 1 Corinthians 8:5-6, which says,
"For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”—yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist"
Does Paul mean to indicate that there are a whole host of exalted beings, but only one God that we worship? I don't think so. In this video, I explain why 1 Corinthians 8:5-6 can't be used to support the LDS notion of exaltation or a plurality of gods. That idea is totally foreign to the Bible, and Mormons really can't use this verse to try and prove that point.
God, on numerous occasions and in a number of different spots in the Bible, clearly indicates that there is no God besides Him. There only ever has been, and only ever WILL be, One Creator God.
Isaiah 43:10 — “…Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.”

Christians AGREE with Moroni 8:18...why don't Mormons?
Many Latter-day Saints agree with LDS Prophet Joseph Smith — that God was once a man like us, and that he’s progressed to godhood...but why don’t Latter-day Saints agree with their own Scriptures?
A verse in the Book of Mormon, Moroni 8:18, says "For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity." Christians agree with Moroni 8:18, so why don't Mormons?
The Book of Mormon says that God cannot change, and that He's eternally been God—which agrees with the testimony of the Bible! And yet, the Mormon Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) disagrees with their OWN Scriptures.
The Bible says that eternal life is knowing God, and thus grasping who God is remains a crucial issue. Here’s the real question: who has GOD revealed Himself to be? Christians agree with this Book of Mormon verse because it summarizes what the Bible clearly states—God does not change.
Happy Moroni 8:18 day! We agree with that verse -- and want our Mormon neighbors to also!

Refuting Mormon Exaltation: Can we become gods someday?
LDS President Lorenzo Snow said “As man now is, God once was; as God now is, man may become.” Historically, the LDS Church has taught that men – by performing sacred Mormon rituals – can become gods. But is this what the Bible teaches?
In this video, we examine whether the Bible supports the LDS doctrine of exaltation and eternal progression. The hope of Mormonism is that men can one day be exalted to become just like Heavenly Father. Many people point to the nature of Jesus as concrete evidence that men can become exalted. Yet, upon closer inspection, it's clear that Scripture actually teaches the exact opposite.
God, on numerous occasions and in a number of different spots in the Bible, clearly indicates that there is no God besides Him. There only ever has been, and only ever WILL be, One Creator God.
Isaiah 43:10 — “…Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.”

Why I Can't Trust The Joseph Smith Translation
There's a problem with the Joseph Smith Translation (JST) version of Romans 4. Mormons claim that Joseph Smith received direct revelation for the JST, and that's why there's no Biblical manuscript record of any of the JST's changes. But in the case of Romans 4, the JST directly flips the meaning of the Biblical text in a way that doesn't make sense for the surrounding context.
If Joseph's change to Romans 4:5 really is a problem, then it demonstrates that Joseph wasn't receiving divine revelation for the JST. And if Joseph wasn't receiving divine revelation for the JST, then he's a false prophet.
In this video, I explain why Joseph Smith's version of Romans 4 doesn't match with the surrounding context of Romans, and completely flips Paul's intended meaning on its head.
