Frank Dunning is a World War 2 veteran, from the Royal Artillery's 135th Field Regiment. The division was deployed to Fortress Singapore during WWII, where they held out against the Japanese until the Fall of Singapore. Resulting in the largest British surrender in history. From there, Frank and his fellow prisoners of war were sent to camps, and later used by Japan as slave labor on the Burma Railway. This also become known as the "Death Railway" and claimed the lives of many Allied POWs and civilians. "Valor in History" is a special feature that can be unlocked by playing "Medal of Honor: Rising Sun", by finding certain collectables on each mission. A Flying Tigers pilot by the name of Raj is sent to assist them with reconnaissance. When he is shot down over one of the temples, the group launches a rescue mission. Before the US officially entered WWII, a small force of volunteer pilots fought for the Chinese against the advancing Japanese invaders. This elite group became known as the Flying Tigers. The Battle of Tarawa was part of Operation Galvanic, the US invasion of the Gilberts. It took place in the Tarawa Atoll, but mostly on the small island of Betio. It was also the first time in the Pacific War that the United States faced serious Japanese opposition to an amphibious landing. The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal was the decisive engagement in a series of naval battles between Allied and Imperial Japanese forces. The action consisted of combined air and sea engagements over four days, most near Guadalcanal and all related to a Japanese effort to reinforce land forces on the island. Allied aircraft sank most of the Japanese troop transports and prevented the majority of the Japanese troops and equipment from reaching Guadalcanal. Thus, the battle turned back Japan's last major attempt to dislodge Allied forces from Guadalcanal. The capture of the airfield did not end the fighting on Guadalcanal. The Japanese still had control of the seas, and a fresh force soon arrived to retake the island from the Allies. Entrenched artillery positions and hidden snipers made the airfield all but usable. The Japanese are hammering them with artillery from a position codenamed "Pistol Pete". Because of this, Gunny gives Joe two Marines and a mission to take out Pistol Pete. Along the way, they meet up with Martin Clemens, a Scottish guerrilla fighter and Coastwatcher. The Battle of Cape Esperance was the second of four major surface engagements during the Guadalcanal campaign, and took place at the entrance to the strait between Savo Island and Guadalcanal. Japanese naval forces in the Solomon Islands, sent a major supply and reinforcement convoy to their forces on Guadalcanal. While three heavy cruisers and two destroyers were to bombard the Allied airfield on Guadalcanal. As with the preceding naval engagements, the strategic outcome of this battle was inconclusive because neither the Japanese or United States secured operational control of the waters around Guadalcanal.
